It would be utterly unplayable.

Hellfirejet,

I would love to see it too. However, the logistics alone would make it unmanageable. Not to mention the map size and the amount of units would be astronomical. It would be a miracle and a wonder. I would definitely play it but the turns would take forever to plan out and then the turn resolution would take all day.

Unplayable as a two-person game definitely. Massively multiplayer might work if done well.

And the game would still take FOREVER to play. More people doesn't equate to faster play.

Ask the Threadwar players how far they've gotten in gametime and how long it's taken in realtime.

+1

This GLOBAL idea comes up every year or so and assuming all the programming/testing/design issues could be handled (which I doubt) I do not believe manual would be done before I die (ie: 40 years from now). And no, I would not be satisfied with a PDF download. It would have to be something I could read and study while hiding in the hills from bill collectors.[:(][:(][:(]

To easy to box in the Germans and they definately did not have a big fleet, the Italians to could be boxed in easy and hunted down with A/C.  I think this system is best left for the Pacific theater...IMO [;)]

True. Plenty of people dream of the Mega-Games++++, but they don't actually bother to think it through. I used to dream of such a thing as well. Then I grew up.

Ah but there is the issue: Witp is not designed for multiplayer. In fact, it seems designed to hinder it badly. Round robin turn submission is death on any multiplayer concept. Absolute death. IT DOES NOT WORK AND NEVER WILL. (Loud so Matrix can hear it [:D])

I've played multiplayer space conquest games with 6,7, and 8 players and easily just as many units to move about and order. The key is simultaneous turn submission and player compartmentalization. Each player deals with only their pieces and their diplomacy.

While I love the boardgame WiF and found it a superior system, I am highly doubtful how well that design will translate to a multiplayer computer game. So much of the system is designed for immediate player interaction to resolve combat. That's what made it so enjoyable as a boardgame: the permutations of any situation were vast providing lots of replayability and variety.

As far as Threadwar.......it will take 5 times longer than real time.....as we average 1-2 turns a week......'Fear and Loathing' we did manage to average 5 turns a week.......that being said......T's right a comp. WW2 game in this format would be unplayable in time terms......

It's not the scale or the level detail that is the hinderance. It is the turn submission/resolution/reporting engine that fails. It must be simultaneous and compartmentalized. Realistically, it would have to be designed ONLY for massive multiplayer in order to work.

Considering the land combat system is arguably the weakest portion of the game, and that the European/North African portion of the war was, for the most part, a land war (or at least to a much larger degree than the Pacific War), I am not sure it would work.  Not without some serious upgrades at least.

I mean the Soviets alone probably had more active LCUs in late 1944-1945 than there were total in the Pacific (I am totally guessing here, but I bet I am not far off).  You would more than double the number of US air and land units.  Possibly the same for the UK.  Much more developed density of land hexes in Europe.  Hundreds of subs for the Germans.  Mulitple new nationalities (Germans, Poles, Czechs, Romanians, Italians, Norwegians, Belgians, expanded French and Soviets, Hungarians, Austrians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians, etc.).  And with the whole world playable, you would probably have to finally develop Allied production models (at least UK, Soviet Union and the remaining European nations, maybe the US could stay "off map"), in addition to German and Italian production obviously.

My God, I can't even imagine it.
