Outing myself as a Paradox-Fanboy, I would recommend Hearts of Iron 2.

Or not, if you want a detailed game.
It's always trading details and accuracy for actually making a game playable.
It may be not the most detailed world war 2 simulation, but the whole world with every nation, production, diplomacy, detailed events etc. etc. is in this game and it doesn't take you 5 years to complete a game from 1936 to 1945.
And it is loads of fun. Steamrolling the Soviets, successfully completing a Sealion and then invading the US. In which other game can you get that?

It's a great boardgame. Definitely less detailed than Witp. I have doubts how it will translate to a computer game considering how interactive the system is.

Hello folks,
Anyone here like me would love to see a version of the game that includes the whole of the 2nd World war Europe and the Atlantic ? for me that would be a dream come true, imagine the size and scale off the game!!!

I have enjoyed the Hearts of Iron series for the Eruo land war aspect. But it doesn't do a great job with Air, and worse with naval.

There was a Med mod made for WITP.  Speedy and Pauk started respective AARs.  That match seems to have dies a natural death.

Died a natural death?? Or got hidden 'undercover' by Matrix so they can sell it as another add on down the track?? The first expansion pack for AE??

I remember the scenario for War Plan Orange was on the Forum here for a while... then it dissapeared... then it re-appeared as a stand alone game.

Well hows about an Atlantic version then? untill they make the whole world version [:D]

I would really like to see an Atlantic WW2 game at the WitP level. Back in 1970s SPI did a solitaire game called wolfpack which covered the U-Boat war, and PC games such as Great Naval Battles covered the surface ship side, but you could imagine a game at WitP's level of detail covering the whole Atlantic campaign.

The WitP game engine isn't the one to do it with, unfortunately, but I can always dream.
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

If they did make a Atlantic version, it definately would have to be WW I. THAT! Would be so cool....WOW...just thinking about that with the Atlantic raiders in the south and the huge battlefleets in the North Sea and Med...jezz I'm getting excited just thinking about that!

If any of you are intrested in naval board games you absolutely have to check out Avalanche Press and the Great War at Sea Series, I've gotten all but 2 of them and the art work and play style are great. Money well spent! I only bring up that point because they have a great WW I series in the North Sea and Med. plus others featuring raiders and stuff...I always wanted those games to be digitalized. Hi Howard,
Yes I would love to see an Atlantic version also, I know that the German navy were far to timid in using there surface fleet. In my humble opinion Hitler and his admirals had not a scooby on how to do anything with the surface fleet, now if they had used the same principal as the U boats hunting in wolf packs, If Bismarck,Tirpitz,Scharnhorst,Gneisenau,Admiral Scheer,Lutzow,Admiral Graf Spee + the heavy cruisers all were in a task force then I think Britains dominance at sea would have been severely tested ?

Put it this way Britain struggled to cope with just one or two surface raiders at a time harrassing the convoy system off merchant ships, a larger fleet like the one above would have scared the shit out of the admiralty.
Regards,
Graham.

Seems to me that Germany just didn't have the fleet train or base support to support operations in the Atlantic for such a large fleet. Fueling one or two ships with small pre-placed assets, or fueling/supplying U-Boats from "interned" freighters is one thing. Supporting a surface action group away from home ports without a bunch of AOs is another. And repeatedly making the run past England or past Gibralta to get to German, Italian or French ports would have been dangerous.

Germany just wasn't well situated in WWII to have any kind of significant surface fleet. Once they lost any kind of quantitative parity with England they were pretty much stuck with U-boats that could sneak by the UK.

My thoughts anyway.

The only way a game that size could remotely be playable is though weekly turns.  Still not sure it would work though.

The ranges were good enough for operations from Brest.

If you want to play the war in the atlantic, you just have to wait... two or three years [;)]
I was working on a "war in the west" mod and have invested a lot of time even in finding out the length of most german slipways... But the slots of witp ar way to few which forces me to wait for AE. If AE has finally found it's way on my PC, it'll take some more time for a first playable version, for sure [;)]

Brest was a little on the exposed side for docking large surface ships there.  Concrete sub pens are one thing, protecting surface ships is another.  Its why they parked Tirpitz in a fjord, instead of France.  That close to England, they would have Taranto'd the German Navy the first time they docked there and damn the aircraft losses.

It would have to be WW I or it wouldn't work, Panther is right about Brest, very hard to keep that place operational for German surface fleet.  A/C need to be less of a threat for there to be any real fun playablitiy.  You would also forget about a ground game, WITP system definately wouldn't work well, but if it was WW I you wouldn't need to worry about it...they never moved hardly anyways [:D][:D][:D]

But how you could arrange how well the war was going would be for the Brits, French, and Yanks to supply the war and interdict...I guess the same would apply for the Germans and Austrians.  Destroyed tonnage would make a big deal politically to, after all, both sides did see the naval fleets as the part of the war that would/could win or lose the war.
