New Player Here
Hello everyone. I purchased WitP about a year ago and after some half-hearted false starts I feel ready to take the plunge.
The difference, perhaps, this time is my level of commitment.
I spent some time browsing the WitP forums today and was really impressed by the community.
The overall maturity and helpfulness apparent by the posters (and humor) make the community sound like a fun bunch of people that are supportive (mostly) of other players.
The good news is that I have had life-long interest in all things military...I am building a collection of historical firearms...I enjoy reading military history books (especially personal histories like "The Forgotten Soldier", "Soldat", "All Quiet On The Western Front", etc)...and have ancestors/relatives/friends who have served and I have a lot of respect and admiration for them--for better or worse I think I'm 4-F (in WW2 draft lingo) so I will never have the opportunity to follow in their footsteps.
The bad news is that 1) I have a social life, 2) I spend a lot of time on church related activities, 3) I help run the family business and, finally, 4) I really like to play all types of computer and video games.
At any rate, assuming I find the time, I hope that I get some serious mileage out of WitP, with a long term goal of PBEM.
It looks like a fantastic game with a great community.

I would say forget your life......but wont.[:'(]
Easy way to play PBEM with that type of schedule is find someone who is willing to play a slow paced game. Just post exactly what you are looking for in an opponent. I can crank turns quickly during the winter months, but once spring and summer get here, they slow down dramatically due to work.
We all try to help out the new people........we were all there our selves once. Read the must read threads stickied. Lots of good info there. But when all else fails, ask.

Just forget about your social life and welcome to the madhouse! [:D]
Also this is the kind of a game which will become the only one. Actually I think that this game has the best fun-playtime/money ratio among all the others.
If you are interested in a PBEM, take some equally green opponent who can post turns in the same pace as you can...

Welcome aboard, Woderick. [8D]
This is indeed how I have found our forum community to be. There are also players out there who are a good match, no matter what type of opponent you are looking for. My opponent and I are playing about 3-4 turns/week, and it seems to fit both of our schedules pretty well. [:)]

Woderick,
Welcome to the "Land of the Truly Lost" (that's what I call this forum). I just got WitP in January (see my thread), and it's quite a game. (BTW, I also have Grisby's World at War, and Guns of August.) You might want to try intially one of the shorter scenarios against the AI; I'm doing Guadalcanal, which is a good one. Don't worry about making mistakes; I've made a boatload, and have learned from them. Also, as has been suggested, check out the "Must Read Threads" and take a look at the AARs which will give you some idea what's going on here. A good luck and good hunting!

Welcome to the asylum! Don't worry about the commitment to the game, toy with the AI at your own pace. Then when your ready find a PBEM opponent who has similar time restraints and play.

RE: New Player Here
hi woderick,
dont get panic because of the complexibility of the game. the time consuming part is the beginning. lets take the japanese:
when you have brought order to your production, base expansions, garnisons and get things in burma, china, DEI, PH, SWPAC..running, a single turn will not take a long time. by then, you only need to do minimal changes to the different aspects of the game and you are fine.
when you and your real life survive the first few turns, you made it.[;)]

RE: New Player Here
I think you would be well advised to play the Allies the first time around. I have been playing this game sense it release and I STILL AM A TOTAL BOZO WITH THE JAP PRODUCTION. AND STILL AM.
Everyone tell me to stick to it well have been sticking to it and its time for a break for awhile that way My situation as the Allies against the nAI will not look as bad as I remember it,

Welcome. It's a fun and interesting game, great community. You are going to have a blast, and learn some things. But I am sorry that your business will now fail, your family and friends will wonder what happened to you, and your church may feel the need to stage an intervention. Oh, and there are now no other games that matter , and make sure your significant other understands that they are now running a distant second.
I think that about covers it.

Graham (aka "helljet").
So you've got WitP in addition to Guns of August. Welcome, as I call it, to the "Land of the Truly Lost" (I was also told that me my soul was now "lost" or "possessed"). Actually, the folks on this forum have been really good in us "newbies" get into this game, which by far the most complex and complicated computer game I've ever dealt with. I also do several "war game" board games (I'm a WWI buff, but do others as well0, but it's often hard to find opponents in my area to do this with (I live north of Cincinnati).
So where should you start? First, try out the Tutorial. Not only does it address some basic concepts (both from the Allied and Japanese side), but looking at the antimations is a hoot (these include some gigantic air combat/surface combat battles where the opposing ships line up on either side, and have at it). Next, as someone recommended to me, try the Guadacanal scenario (first from the Allied side, then from the Japanese side), with the Historical start setting on; this will give you a feel for what strategies to pursue, how to arrange the various types of TFs, etc. (Later you can turn off the Historical start, and try your own strategy.) Guadalcanal also gives you the variety of "island hopping" (in the Solomons), as well as a significant "land campaign" (New Guinea), plus dealing with both US and British air (and naval) units.
As Canoerebel advised (he's got a very detailed and interesting AAR post running under Forelorn Hope), logistics is a crucial part of WitP. If you don't move supplies/fuel in the direction of you offensives, you're going to be in trouble. Also, you've got to pay attention to support units (SeaBees, aviation, etc.), not just combat units, or your bases, especially those you capture, aren't going to develop as need them to. You'll also find a bewildering array of naval units that you need to assemble for transport TFs (both to carry and protect those supplies/fuel). I know quite a few of the acronyms for the various naval units, and even I don't know them all; the folks on this forum have been good about explaining some of these nuances.
Which brings me to my next point; don't be afraid to ask questions. The folks on this forum love to help you out. Also, as you start out, don't be afraid to make mistakes (I've only had WitP about a month and have lost plenty of planes/ships with my "goofs") and learning from those mistakes. "Do-overs" are highly recommended, especially as you try out new strategies and tactics, and learn how the WitP "flows." I'm also reading the 200+ page manual (and will probably read it again when I finish), but use it as a resource, and just jump in and have fun (and loads of it). Good luck and good hunting.

Haha. Business failure, social isolation, separation from God and family. Is this crystal meth or a computer wargame we are talking about??
Nah, just kidding. I'm aware of the risks, confident in my ability to put first things first, and get your humor. Thanks to you (and everyone else) for the warm welcome.

Hi Eric,
I have a few Matrix games so far, and intend to have many more,So like the holodeck in star trek reality for me is playing these games, hey who needs a life outside anyway. My interest is mainly the naval side off things, but I will play anything from Napoleonic - present day.
The banter and sense off humour on the forums are great too[:D]

RE: New Player Here
As I've said before, WitP is not a game. It is a drug. A very addictive drug. To make matters worse, the dealers out there are spreading rumors about a new and more powerful product. Something called "AE".... We're all doomed in here.
