How do you lay smoke using direct fire?

Post by JFW »

I'm selecting my engineers, selecting the X icon. I put a bullseye on my target hex and left click and....nothing happens. Is there a delay of some kind or is it just not working correctly?

JFW: Engs & Inf in SPwaw can only lay smoke if (1) they have smoke grenades, (2) they can only cover
1 hex from their position. Artillery and tanks if properly equipped can fire further, if tanks pop smoke they only screen 1 hex from vehicle. May I reccomend the Spwaw  Depots academy their you can get an excellent feel for the game.  HTH

Look for 'smoke ammo' in the unit info screen (select a unit and right click on it). If the unit has smoke ammo, it can pop smoke. Armored vehicles may have a smoke discharger, which is a bit different, as Bob stated. Infantry may only pop smoke adjacent or in their hex.

OK, thanks. That makes sense. I was trying to have them throw the grenades 3 or 4 hexes forward to hide their advance. If you put smoke into the adjacent hex and then move forward into the hex, does the AI ever just pound that smoky hex with artillery?

Ok, so the correct tactic is to use mortars and artillery to lay smoke 6 or so hexes in front of your infantry advance? If smoke is being laid down, is it safe to use the full movement possible. My understanding is that you should limit your advance to about 2 hexes to avoid being seen if you don't have a smoke screen....but if you do have smoke in front, is it safe to proceed at full run at least during the early part of an assault to quickly get to where the action is going to start? Thanks for any tips you can give. I'm signing up for the training in the depot.

By the way, do you happen to know if there is a good Panzer General or Panzer General II program out there that will run on Vista? The old DOS version of Panzer General is the best campaign strategy game against the AI that I've ever played.

Here at Matrix is John Tiller's Campaign Series. A lot of people liken it to PG. Platoon level.

In the General Discussion forum recently there was a link to a mod and such for PG that I think worked on Vista.

Otherwise many people rave about DosBox for running older games.

JFW - You'll find 'Inbox' at the top right of your screen, near 'My Profile'. The only pop-ups at this site are PM notifications, so it might be helpful to permit pop-ups at this site.

Sorry JFW, I wasn't thinking clearly. JTCS is like Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader, not Panzer General.
