You have done well to be able to keep your 1 AF open and slowly take over the air war. [&o]
Another AF or two will make it very difficult for him.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Bloody day in the air but no naval air losses so I am OK with it. I lost 70 heavies and 20+ float planes over Munda but no strikes came from it.

Munda is still reported as being packed with AC so every available ship is being sent to bombard. Landings will follow at Munda and Russell Is. I considered rerouting the Russel landings to Buin or Vella but then they would be out of CAP cover so I decided against it.

Lunga attacks went well. I am going to bombard for a turn until the Brit BBs can bombard again through.

The next turn looks to be bloody however you look at it.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Yet another bloody day that could have been prevented. My CVs took up station between Russell and Munda (1 hex from each) so as not to present a surface combat target but still close enough to provide fighter cover. All bombardment TFs were supposed to remain on station at Munda so as to be covered by fighters. The thing was that the fighter coverage was hit and miss. As a result it looks like I will lose the BB North Carolina. The bombardment of Munda also failed to shut down the airfield so when my heavies arrived instead of finishing off the planes on the ground, they got shredded. I am now down to my last 25 B-24 replacements.

One unit at Lunga didn't get the order to swtich to bombardment and tried a solo attack with predictable results.

Attacks have been ordered at Lunga, Munda, and Russell for this turn.

On the plus side the I-124 was finally sunk after it sunk it's third victim.

Disaster at Munda-6 CVs lost

Post by RUPD3658 »

Well Gordo out played me. He massed fighters at Shortlands and bombers at Rabaul then used the KB's fighters to escort the bombers from Rabaul. All 6 US Cvs had to be scuttled on the next turn. I screwed up by getting within 8 hexes (Sally/Helen range) of Rabaul and it cost me. Had I syaed 9 hexes out I would have survived. This is worse than the mistake Gordon made getting withing Hurricane range of Madras since he only lost 1 CV as a result.

As for the silver lining, The Brit Cvs had been broken off and thus survived. Much of the CV air groups were divereted intact and will survive. The CVs will respawn in 1.5 years . Aside from that I have a grim future ahead of me.

I have calmed myself by taking in to consideration that this is not the end of the world. In the next 60 days I get the Essex and 5 CVE/CVLs which each hold 30 AC. If I use them with the Brit CVs and the 2 CVEs I already have I can have a carrier force that at least defensively is eqaul to what I just lost. My LBA should be able to keep the KB in check.

This is going to be quite a challange but that is what makes this game fun. 1943 is going to be a long year for me.

As a general rule of thumb, the Allies pay a coordination penalty with having too may planes in a ACTF. In '42, only a CV and CVL should be in a single ACTF. The Japanese do not suffer from having too many in a TF like the Allies. I usually have a CV, 2 or 3 CA, 1 CL, and 6 to 10 DD depending on availability. Add in a BB or two to be torpedo magnets.

This was an expensive lesson for you and hopefully less so for other Allied players.

Where I went wrong was getting within Sally/Helen range of Rabaul and developing a false sense of security that the CAP could handle anything. Gordon also suckered out strikes against sacfificial ships that drew my CAP away. Oh well, live and learn

KB is coming down the slot to try to pick off straggelers. I will have to sacrifice a few AKs to keep the bases supplied long enough to get a relief convoy to them.

I bet you still win this game. He isn't close to '43 auto-victory, and without that it is very difficult for Japan to win. It will be a long crawl, but you'll be fine.

The Allies can recover from a crushing CV defeat. Japan can't; losing 6 CV's in 1942 is fatal for the Empire.

RE: Disaster at Munda-6 CVs lost

Post by RUPD3658 »

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I am slowly coming up with a plan for living in a post CV world. After everyone is safely away from the Solomons I will finalize a plan.

Not too bad today. Munda got nuked but fared better than I thought it would. Several transports at Tass were sacrificed to LBA but served their purpose by unloading supplies. Right now that is the most important thing. I had considered having about 70 P-38s cover these ships but figured that the Zeros would eat them up anyway. After seeing 200+ Zeros escorting the strikes I think I made the right choice. In another month or so I should be able to put 200+ P-38s at Lunga and having a fighting chance to shut down Jap air raids but again, to do that I need supplies.

Invasion of Colombo is going nicely. I should be able to attack in a few days.

Tomorrow's airstrike is going after Andaman Island since I think this is where the Nells and Bettys are coming from.

Second wave of assault troops landed at Colombo. The LRCAP dealt with the Bettys that tried to interfere. Between the LRCAP and bombing Andaman Island the resistance was light. The attack will commence next turn.

Munda got nuked again but the first batch of mines I laid there took out a DD. Hopefully this will cause Gordon to abandon future missions.

RE: Living in a CVless world

Post by RUPD3658 »

Resisance at Colombo was more than expected. I had figured that after months of being bombarded I would just walk over the starving troops. They did not even have lvl 9 forts and they repelled the second attack. Looks like I am going to need every man I brought.

Must say after glancing at each sides threads for this AAR that FOW makes things very interesting and this looks like a very fun match.[:D] You took your carrier losses well, I think I would be buying a new computer monitor[:'(]

OUCH

yeah never ever concentrate em like that

cuz if a big raid gets thru, then all the carriers get hit, if u seperate em into 1 or 2 carrier groups then u weaken them but ull only lose 1 maybe 2, instead of all of em

I guess it comes down to being lazy. I won't do that again. I estimate that thier loss just put off an Allied victory by 6-12 months.

The loss of the CVs makes me have to work smarter and be more creative. This adds a challenege which keeps the game fun. I may even start to resort to psychological warfare against Gordon if need be. [;)]

I understand that feeling about massing those carriers, nothing quite like seeing the 6 Jap Carriers and all your hopes of expansion sink into the depths[X(] At least the ALlies know they get them back. But it is a challenge and that is after all why you play the game[:D] right[&:]

wanted to ask are you from East Brunswick NJ? I am originally from Carteret, not far from there.

This will make me learn how to use CVEs and LRCAP. It will also force me to find a way to make my subs an effective weapon. In the first PBEM I played as Japan I learned how to use "Pick up troops" for both air and fast transport out of nessessity. I am sure I will learn new trick this time too.

Carteret is about 20 minutes from me. I grew up in Roselle Park (GSP Exit 137) and Audubon, PA prior to that but have lived in East Brunswick since 1993.

Why would anyone choose to leave beuatiful NJ for Georgia execpt for the BBQ? [:D]

Retired here when I left the Navy[:D] and except for the bugs, which are horrendous[X(] it is a nice place to live. Besdies work here is good and cost of living not bad.
I visit on occasion, as my brither still lives there.
I am still learning how to use carriers and my biggest problem is I am not a risk taker, and you have to be as Japan to have a chance[&o]

To play Japan you need to be suicidally aggressive. Unfortunetly after playing Japan so much I keep forgetting that I am now playing the Allies and need to be a little more conservative[:D]
