What does this mean? I'm unable to advance tanks on a road on my opening turn. I deployed a column of tanks on a road and advanced some of them westerly, but others wouldn't advance. They will go east, but I'm on an advance mission going west. I don't understand why.

you have command and control turned ON, check your preferences and turn it off..

Better yet, read up on how Command & Control works in the game manual and keep using it. [:)]
What your tanks need is an "objective" set for them (orders for where they are supposed to go).
Reduce SP:WaW slaughter, "Low Carnage":
Settings: 80Spot,80Hit,100R/R,XXXTQ,110TkT,150InfT,180AvSoft,130AvArm,150SOFire / Command & Ctrl ON / AutoRally OFF
