Nov 2nd 1942, a young japanese boy with a cane fishing pole walks along the sandy beach. Suddenly he hears the hum of an airplane engine, he looks up into the morning sun rising, thoughts of the empires rising sun fills his mind, trying once again to get a glimpse of a Japanese plane, his face turns to wonderment as a pair of blue airplanes approach then flash overhead, one heading north one south. They had stars on their wings, was this a new plane. No he thought, impossible the Americans could not be this close to sacred soil [X(]. He turns and quickly runs up the beach he must tell his mother, or the captain that had been visiting mother!
Cpt Murray of the CV Enterprise looks at the signal man and says "Signal fleet, scout planes report in only one patrol craft in range, proceed with "Operation Sacred Violation" [&o]
Cpt Sherman of the CV Lexington turns to the crew on the bridge, "Gentleman once again our luck holds, we have approached undectected and found the waters clear except for one patrol craft which was quickly sunk, tommorrow will be much different. We are landing on Okinawa, Japans sacred island, already we have noticed bombers moving into the area. Their CV's are distracted way to the south. We hope to hold one day to let the transports land, we may not make it back as they will throw everything they have, but we will take this island!"
MGen Morton USMC 2nd Marines Division standing in the ready room with the other officers. "Ok the operations a go, scout planes flew out today an reported only 1 unit of 1000 troops on the south side of Okinawa the area called Naha, thats our drop point. Once we take that we advance north where currently only 2 units with 3000 troops are reported. Cpt Murray of the CV Enterprise does not want to risk splitting the forces so close to Japan, Men we will take this island then Japan will feel the pounding of bombs, day and night!" A loud cheer rises up.
Cpt Murray looks out at the glowering clouds and rain covering his flight deck, Dark clouds hover over the fleet his flight officer comes up. " Sir we won't be able to launch at all today"
"Dam" Murray mutters "Those Japs will chew our ships alive the escort carriers cannot provide enough cover"
flight officer "Don't worry sir, the whole area is soaked in, not a single plane from either side except some bombers from the CVE's are able to take off in the morning"
2nd Officer"The 7 battleships in the bombardment group worked the airfield at Naha over good over 39 planes counted destroyed. It seems the landing is a success!"

Meanwhile way down south at Northern New Guinea the Sasebo 1st SNLF walks along the airfield at Aitpe, glancing at the rising sun flag being raised on the flagpole
Officer Yun "I wonder where the American Paratroopers took off to, they must be scared of our imperial might!"
The weather cleared in the PM of the 3rd day of landings and some of the Japanese planes flew, enough to put 2 of the 3 CVE's covering the landing zone out of action. The Oscars and Tonys chewed thru the wildcats like tissue paper.

I feel fortunate in two days of landings only this strike gets off. The old BB's hit the northern end of Okinawa (Nogo) and head for home. The Enterprise and Lex stand back to hit naval targets and are not dissapointed.

Makes one wonder when the heavies and CV's will show. 4 AP/AK are 120 miles east of Nogo and heading in. Tommorrow will be a rough day as the CVE's had to retire. I just started reading this AAR.......I looked at the date on the last post, that you were invading NAHA (!), and then I had to read to figure out how you got there.....
You have sunk pretty much every IJN CV, taken the Marianas, and now part of Okinawa.
Hats off to your opponent for sticking with it, because he is toast for sure....there is no recovering from that at all. 1943 will be miserable for him, and '44 even worse.
On the 5th the American USA division that originally fought at Fiji then was withdrawn, landed at Luganville then had to be withdrawn and evicted. Has once again landed in the allied cause. Once again back to fiji with a landing at Nandi, unopposed it captured the base and soon will march on Suva where the Japanese have their forces. I believe they must be low on supply as its been months since Japanese ships have been allowed into this area so I believe by the new year Fiji will be liberated!
At Okinawa the CV's pulled back to cover withdrawing transports, some transports continue to unload and get damaged, but the weather helps keep this from a total devastation.
I flew my first bombing run on Japan with an airfield strike on Kagoshima area where he has his main force it did light damage and this came from Nanchang[:)]

I am waiting for the Japanese CV's to show up, it should be soon. Their surface force should also be close.
One of the things I don't report on is North Sumatra where Scott continues to sink ships trying to supply those bases, my fighters don't engage very well.
Here is a picture of the south Pacific and the last 2 Japanese strongholds, there should be snlf/guards at fiji and 2 divisions and bf at Luganville.
I could let them sit, but have the desire to at least liberate fiji!

The war is a year old and the last several days have had bombing runs by both sides.
Okinawa - Scott has launched attacks vs shipping and Naha airfield and port from Japan and Formosa, The heavy bombers at Nanchang rested then hit the formosa airfield and with only 10 zero's on cap managed to rough it up a little! My shipping gets damaged but no major losses, Naha is not operational at the moment but planes are there.

This forced scott to abandon the base for the moment. Also a hapless group of transports blundered thru the combat zone and about 6 AK's and a PG dissapear after two days from air attacks and surface groups. He could be trying to drain my ops?
Down south Rabaul port is hit for the 1st time by 70 heavies from Lunga, a CL several DD's and numerous other ships are hit, over 19 ships detected in port, no longer are ports safe in the south pacific. Truk airfield gets hit again by over 100 heavies, several Sonia's and scout planes left there are demolished.
Two days ago my scout planes spotted a strong surface force BB's/CA's 180 miles SE of Vietnam headed to Camranh harbor, apparently his heavies must have been south with his CV's. They soon will be in range to battle over Okinawa.

Frank and Charlie walk briskly up to their airplanes, already the mechanics are backing away. The breifing that morning had been short, the Jap transports spotted 240 miles to the SE yesterday were spotted a mere 120 miles to the east this morning, only one more day till they got here. They had damaged some before but they only carried the 500 lbrs the first day. Today they carried a 1/2 ton from hell hanging from their bellies!
Frank climb into his cockpit quickly scanning the controls, everything looked good as he started the engine and felt the blast of wind blow past the cockpit, all sound deadened by the roar of the engine. He waves to Frank who is doing the same, then closes the cockpit.
A while later they spot the transports below, must be around 10 and begin to make their attack runs, as they peel over and line their sites on the transports they notice a large amount of men on the deck "Good" he thinks. This is the 1st attack of the day, they would have time to make another in the afternoon. Finally Hollandia had teeth.

The chinese are going about the business of finishing the construction of Nanchang, it has grown to 8 different strips and can handle the largest allied bombers with no difficulty. Today the bombers had left on another mission to hit another field in Formosa, as every other day after the bombers left, the workers went back to work putting the finishing touches on the airfields as all planes were gone.
Then a distant drone could be heard coming from the southwest, looking up into the sky they see close to 100 Japanese bombers, This was the first attack on their base and they begin running for cover as the bombs begin to land.

They are immediatly ordered to fly out to safer fields, as evening sets, a large group of fighters begin to land. The chinese smile and pat the arriving pilots on the back when they get out of their planes.
In the evening of the 13th a japanese surface group and bombardment group arrives at Okinawa and sinks 6 transports then bombards the facilities and troops. They escape to the NE during the day, but a CL gets hit by an SS.

At Palembang yesterday I swept the skies with 40 P-38G's and took down 7 tonies, today I sent in torpedo planes to try and reduce the airfield with mixed results. He has a lot of bombers and transports here.

The surface group arriving at Okinawa opens a new chapter in the battle, my CV and surface groups retired from the area several days ago. Ops were low on the CV's and I was not leaving the surface group without aircover.
For the third day in a row Nanchang gets attention. I gather Scott really wants to shut this base down. The AVG gets a bloody nose but pushes back well.

In the south Pacific, Scotts transports the other day made hollandia and land remnants of 4 units, total av a little over a 100. Only one transport is left at sunset and these troops have a limited life.

In the far south, the USA division has just marched to Suva and tommorrow will begin the bombardments, more troops are arriving. In the British theatre the battle between northern Sumatra and Palembang and the Singapore penisula rages with minor thrust at different areas.
All in all about 30 to 60 planes go down from each side, lately more from mine. This attrition will drain the pilot quality from both sides, but there is hope for the US forces, talk of a new fighter to temper the massed Japanese contigent is in the near future!

Also at Suva the American USA division test the defense's it appears they have a lot of troops here, but the low gun count has me convinced they may lack supplies, no matter I have time to bring in Artillary and suppress these troops.

Elsewhere same air war continues, I have temporarily lost the airwar over Naha, I said Temporarily [;)]
The last 3 days have seen heavy air action over Nanchang where the AVG reappeared, both sides stopped attacking for a day or two and the day after Japan commenced the AVG arrives. At Okinawa I have pulled out my P-38's as they were getting pounded on ground and air and I do not replace the F4F's as he has total air dominance and daily sends over 130 bombers to level the airfield (oh where is the bad weather).
At Palembang P-38G's sweep for torpedo planes and begin to hit the airfield, also Rabaul and Truk ports are hit again, there are 20 ships at Truk and 9 left at Rabaul, a further 12 ships are to the west of Rabaul, so all in all about 40 transport type ships trapped in this area.
At Suva I have bombarded and have the American USA division and 2 RCT, I will shock tommorrow to see how strong the base is. If I'm lucky it should fall, appears low supplies.
In the air the last 3 days thanks to AVG and P-38G's Scott has lost close to 200 aircraft to approx 50 of mine. The previous 3 days had seen me taking it on the chin, thus the tides of war shift daily in our campaign.
As we close on the end of the year I will up date the various theatres.

Kwaleign has 3 damaged ships in port, one is CL, on land there are 8 units one has to be a division, I bomb the airfield 4 out of 7 days with LBA from majuro, it is more to drain supply then damage, he has supply as he continuously repairs the airfield. Jaliut, Maleop, Wotje are still garrisoned, I do not have the transport available nor is it a high priority to clear this area. I cleared out all the atolls in the area with 2 transports carrying a raider group (finally a use for these small units). It took a couple of weeks but all were empty, took more time unloading and reloading. Ponape has a unit though I have not reconned in a while.
Once again this is backwater and I am not sure if I will expend effort to finish these off as the battle at Okinawa consumes my attention.
Dec 23rd Suva gets its first taste of blood in many months and the end looks near.
Although my troops took heavy casualties, reinforcements are on the way.
