Different version numbers

Post by Raver508 »

A question about patches: My opponent and I inadvertantly began our game with our games patched to different levels. I was the japanese and patched to 1.81 (the latest patch at least) and he was only patched to 1.5. My opponent has now upgraded, but will this cause any problems?

You betcha!!

You will almost definitely get severe sync/replay errors.

You both have to have the same version and map to avoid this.

Bummer.  Are the problems limited to just a desynchronised replay, or are there gameplay problems as well?

Since the Allied player really doesn't know what is going on, for most players this is a show stopper and the game isn't pursued until the problem is fixed... so the wider problems (if any) aren't usually seen.

Between 1.5 and 1.81 there were database changes and possibly art changes - though I do not think (in stock) there were any base relocations. We certainly do not recommend trying to play across this vast a difference but - if you both get up to the same level - then if you are really lucky then maybe things will settle down and you can get back in synch. Until you do then the Japanese player can send the "combatreport" file along with the 001 file just after he does the replay - then the Allied player should read the combatreport file first. This will tell him what really happened. Then he if likes to be confused, he can watch the replay movie and see how far off it is. Then later, after the Japanese player sends the turn, the Allied player can do his turn.

Normally there is a bit of "out of synch" just after an upgrade - but this settles down after a turn or so - but because you guys are trying to upgrade across several versions - the normal interval may not apply. In which case you may want to try the "POMPAC" method oh say 4+ turns after the upgrade to see if that helps. But worst case you will remain out of synch. I haven't tested the scenario you guys are in - so I'm not sure what will happen.

it will tell you what happened to some extent... i get a lot of information out of watching the replay (i.e. - what daitais/chutais/sentais/LCUs are attacking or being attacked, and by keeping track of them i get an idea of what the Japanese player is up to.) If you don't have this information, you might be at a disadvantage.

Probably depends on the player - but Ive played for months just off the combat replay - it saves a lot of time!

Hey that's great advice guys, thanks.  I'll send my opponent a link to this thread.  I have been sending him the replay for a while now, and he hasnt mentioned anything for a few turns, so I'm hopeful that its all ok.
