New player questions

Post by hbrsvl »

Hi-I'm just getting into this game and am having "newbie" problems. Playing the Poland '39 tutorial scenario, as Germany, only Germany human controlled.

1. What do the blinking white dots at the upper left hand corner of units signify? That they are in supply, or what?
2. I have purchased an Inf Div & a Inf Corps. When I go to "Deploy units", select a unit, then hit deploy unit the screen goes back to the map. When I checked the Reserve pool, units are still there. What have I not done, or need to do to deploy?

That's it for now.

Thanks, Hugh Browne

The blinking dots represent units, yours or the enemy's, that have not yet participated in a multi-unit attack. All units in such an attack must have the "dots".  This is an important point, and a nice piece of design I think.

The going "back to the map" is to allow you to pick a spot to deploy the purchased unit you have chosen to deploy.  The shaded hexes represent possible spots.  When you click on such a hex the unit you have chosen to deploy will appear there.

cpdeyoung-Many thanks-that helps.

Further questions:
1How large are the hexes? Are they 20-30-50 miles from side to side?\
2. After playing the "tutorial", I played the Europe '39 scenario, with UK,France & Germany human controlled.
Problem: I loaded the BEF in London for sea transport, destination Le Harve. I believe I did everything right, but during this turn & next couldn't find BEF anywhere. What happened?

Thanks, Hugh Browne

Dear Hugh,

Check and see if the transport carrying the BEF is still in London. You do this by going to the Fleet Screen. If London has vessels in port the anchor will "glow". If so click there and look for your transport. If there is a fleet there the transport may have joined that fleet.

Portsmouth and Southhampton are straight shots to Le Havre, but I think from London you will have to go through a sea zone. In any case search all the sea zones and ports that show British vessels. Once you find your transport select the fleet, click "Move Fleet", and select Le Havre. Once the transport is there you select the transport "counter", and click unload. Go to the main map and the BEF will be in Le Havre or an adjacent hex. If the transport is still in London you must go to a sea zone to get to Le Havre. This will necessitate leaving the transport in a sea zone for a turn. Select a sea zone with sufficient escorts, RN warships, to protect it from German raiders and fleets.

The manual says the hexes are 20KM or 12.5 miles across.

Chuck-Something funny is going on in my game. I used your last post to me & ran the '39 scenario again, with GB as only human control.

I did exactly as instructed but with no joy. The Transport ends back in London after each turn.

Did the above 3 times, suspected I might have a bad installation uninstalled & reinstalled the game, ran it 3 times again, with same results. I ran game for 3-4 turns each time. Always back in London. And yes, it shows the BEF embarked.

Any further suggestions? Thanks, HB

Load the unit in a port. Go to the fleet screen and click on that port. Find the fleet with the transport. Click select all. Click move fleet. Move the fleet to an adjacent sea zone. Leave fleet screen and then go back and check that fleet is in sea area you moved it to.
Next turn move fleet to port. Click on port and find fleet with transport. Click on transport unit. Click on unload.

James-OK, here's what happened when I followed your instructions:
1.Loaded unit in London.
2.Went to fleet screen -Found fleet with unit in London.
3.Clicked select all.
4.Hit move fleet.
5.When I hit "move fleet", a line went from London to the North Sea sea area. Also both the North Sea & Atlantic sea areas retangles were outlined in blue.
6. Left fleet screen.Went back to fleet screen and there were no ships in it, nor in the Atlantic sea area.
7.Next turn fleet was in London, with troops.

I guess where I'm having a problem is where you say"move fleet to an adjacent sea area". I'm not clear just how that is done. Manually, or does the computer do it?
I'm beginning to think I may have a defective CD. Anyway, do you have any further suggestions? Many thanks for your(and everyone's help). HB

Legitimate moved are shown by the colored lines. From London you can only move into the North Sea. You need to click on the area you want to move to after to choose Move Fleet. So choose to move the fleet in London and then click on the North Sea box. You will see the ship numbers change in the area you moved into. If there is already a fleet there you will need to click on the drop down menu when you click on the sea area to see additional fleets in the ares.
I don't see how a defective CD could cause a problem with just sea moves but maybe it can.

Great. It is confusing at first.

Heck I'm still totally baffled by the naval combat!
