Odd Highlighting

Post by PaulWRoberts »

I came across an odd situation in detailed battle recently. In the picture below, I am French. Three of my units (two caissons and a disordered garrison) and several of the enemy units (all caissons) are highlighted in blue as if they are all selected. I was not holding down the Ctrl-key at the time, so this isn't a case of highlighting the unit's organization. (But that wouldn't account for the highlighted enemy anyway.)

It was a night turn, and what was also odd was that I couldn't give fire orders. I understand that the spotting range is reduced at night, but I couldn't target units only two hexes away. I also couldn't order my caissons to resupply units right next to them. Is that normal for night, or is something screwy here?

When day dawned, all was well again.

For the caisson range question, yes, that does happen because night plus low move initiative means you may not have enough movement points to go even one hex if there are terrain issues.  In your example it looks like you are moving up hill so it's possible that's the reason.

For the highlighting issue, no idea, eric will have to comment.

For the nighttime, I should know this but it's not coming to memory.  I do think one hex is usual unless under certain circumstances (upgrades primarily).

I believe that at night you can only fire on adjacent enemies, unless you have Scouting I and II as upgrades., in which case you can fire one hex further.

The main blinking highlight shows the active unit; the secondary highlighting shows other units in the active unit's military group.  You can change the group level shown in brigade level between division and corps/army using the 'e' key (stands for "echelon").  When giving a group-move order, these secondarily highlighted units will be the ones that move with the unit.  This is also useful information to have since units in the same corps should all move on the same initiative segment, and receive extra flanking damage when flanking with each other.

Thanks, all.

The original oddity still stands, though. I can't figure out why the enemy caissons are highlighted along with my units. (This was during my turn.)

And the other thing--I know that firing at night is limited in range, but I couldn't get my caissons to supply the units immediately adjacent. The white circle just didn't appear. This effect and the highlighted-enemy effect both disappeared when the morning turn came, so I wonder if they are related.
