I was curious as to how most people play the game. I don't have CoG:EE but from my short experience with CoG I felt that the detailed battles took FOREVER to play with absolutely no end in sight! Now I didn't play much so perhaps I was doing it wrong. But when each unit consists of about 8000 men each and you're plinking away at 60 or a 100 each engagement then it just seems to go on forever! I like the strategy element but I don't want to invest an entire evening in one single battle. Is there a better way or was I just doing it wrong? Or has it changed for the new game?

Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
I didn't do a search for this so I hope it doesn't blow up in my face

RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
I don't have a lot of gaming time available, so I'm with you. All of my battles are quick battles.
RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
So far most land battles are detailed, and most naval battles quick battles. But in most games of this sort (TW series etc), I usually let the computer fight the battles. So far long battles don't bother me too much because I have plenty of time, and the turn-based system is a game in itself.

I personnally go this way:
-I select a general that I impressionate. I only fight the battles where this general is involved!
-All other battles are quick battles.
Granted I often fight the big battles... But I have been surprised with my pants donw by both Grande Armee (ie: my impressionating general was not there...) Let's say it was ugly
I find it's the best way to play the game

RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
well, I play as Nappys boss, so I fight all the battles
I normally fight out all battles, other then the hopelessly out numbered ones
I think it is the getting used to the battles that take the most time, once you are used to them, I normally can zip though them pretty quickly

i always play detailed combats.

Using my magical powers, I just turned this into a poll thread. Multiple choices are possible, so please answer for both land and naval combat.

RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
For land I use detailed for almost all battles including small ones.. I'm better at capturing enemy units especially their arty then the Quick battle is. However for sea battles I prefer to fight the small battles in detail (< 10 ships) and leave the large battles to Quick combat. I can't seem to get the hang of large fleet actions.

RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
Detailed on both.
Only exception is when one of my armies take on a single enemy division or when my privateers go for a merchant.

Doesn't it take a long time to fight those detailed battles? I tried a quick battle in the original CoG and it took forever!! After 45 minutes I finally said screw it and hit the button for the computer to take over-even then the computer continued fighting for a good 5 minutes (or was it 10? it sure felt like it!) I couldn't believe it!
I'm I doing it so wrong or do you guys just enjoy spending half your evening fighting one battle? This could be a deal breaker for me because while grand strategy is nice I always like to get in some tactical fighting as well. I guess I'm looking for more of a Panzer General type tactical game though or at least something where the time scale is a little different. What is the time scale anyways? 1 turn = 1 hour? Cause in my battle we started in the early morn and it continued until 12 pm the next day before I let the computer take over. That's 30 turns of moving about 10 units!

Yeah Im with you I love the idea of this game but usually go to instant battles because the thought of spending all night on one battle drives me nuts. I love tactical as well just wish they could make it go faster. And by faster I dont mean putting the units on top of each other but more like you said panzer general style or age of wonders style...

They do take quite some time, but the detailed battles, in my opinion, are excellent...even better when they made it so the troops were not so far apart (which I think they fixed for FoF and obviously this)...CoG took a long time because you spent ages just looking for the enemy...they started battles miles apart

RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
I also think the battles are excellent. I think they play great. I just think they're too bloody long! (I'm referring to COG here) I see from one of the AAR's that the chasing of fleeing units has been changed to solve automatically. But I also just found out that one turn is equal to 20 minutes!! So if that is the same for the original CoG, when I played last night for 30 hours at 3 turns an hour with about...10-12 units...that is a HELL of a lot of different moves to make!! What I would love would be to play the exact same battles but reduce the turns to 1 per hour, reduce the distance units can cover by a relative amount and then triple the amount of casualties every turn. Wouldn't that then make a one hour slog battle a mere 20 minutes? Would that break the system I wonder?
RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
I didnt realize we could vote for two options. I like to play out the detailed battles unless Im positive Im going to pound the opposition because any decent player can outperform the result of quick battle.
Also try to always detail battle naval conflict because the amount of units that get completely flattened in naval quick combat is way out of sync with detailed naval combat, something I think ought to be looked at for rebalancing.

The battles are just too long to fight each one.

RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
I almost always fight detailed land and naval battles. Its half of the fun playing the game.
RE: Do you quick battle or detailed battle?
This game is like having two games. You can think of playing the strategic level as one game (and include the quick battles) for a nice evening of game play... and you can think of the detailed battles as another game which in itself can take an hour or more on very large battles. If you want something fast moving and lots of turns, then stick with quick battles. If you don't mind the extra time to fight the detailed battles, they can be very enjoyable and rewarding themselves.
So if you can only play occasionally and don't really have a lot of time you might be better suited to playing using quick battles. On the other hand if you don't mind the slower pace and/or perhaps have a bit more time then I would really recommend the detailed battles.
