game freeze in naval combat

Post by flaggelant »

hey,

Me & my brother started Pbemming after a while again, but now we ran into a problem..

its turn 3, we had several naval combats in earlier rounds, but now on turn 3 the game stalls during the 1st naval combat.

its a combat in PI (apari i believe), where my bombardmentforce (me as jap player) of 1 CL + 3 DD (i know its not much of a force [8|]) suprises 5 PT that are moving in to sink some shipping

2 PT are hit by several shells from DD's and thats about where the game freezes i'm not sure if the combat is over at that stage (no torpedo's fired & only 2 out of 4 ships firing guns)

hitting escape before battle ends is no use, as it still freezes

in both cases the end rapport isnt shown, i've played the turn about 10 times now,
after system reboots, new savegame download, hitting escape, not hitting escape..
all games follow the exact same result (ap's with same damage, torpedo dud's, PT surface combat resulting in freeze)

i'm running in XP, my opponent in vista (at least i believe so)
game is a simple stock game

ive tried other savegames (including shelling PT's etc) and these work perfectly fine, so its probably in the (save)game?

so i kinda ran out of knowhow of how to solve this problem.... and after playing the turn 10 times the fun is wearing off fast..

anyone got a clue??

This sort of behavior can happen when the save game file gets corrupted, probably during transmission. The solution is to go back to some point before this behavior occurred. First ask your brother to resend the turn to see if this fixes the problem. If not then you have to redo the day before, etc.

Make sure you are both running the same version of WITP as well. The XP vs Vista should not be a problem. The save game file does not depend on the operating system.

thnx for the fast reply [&o]

the savegame has been sent to me twice (which didn't work), so i'd say my brother has to redo his part of the turn
down from the savegame i've sent him before that, or do i have to redo a turn as well in order to straighten out everything?

I found that sometimes combat with PT boats causes the game to crash. This happens during the initial Japanese execution and in the Allied replay. If you hit "ESC" fast enough, sometimes you can skip past it.
Delete the trackerdb.* files.
Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

Flagellant,
Give Floydg's idea a try. Otherwise I would start with the previous day's replay and run it twice. If you get the exact same results twice then you know things are working as they should. In one of my recent games, we had the sync bug for a couple of days before the unrecoverable crash and we had to go back three days to get things stable again.

I'd also like to know which version of the game each player is using. The dateTime stamp on the EXE would help know that.

Joe - our crashes with PT surface combat was with 1.8.0.6. It didn't happen all the time, just once in a while.

Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

what exactly does this mean? i'm not really into computers, i've looked into the properties of the .exe file, but couldn't really find anything you might need, except version 1.8.0.0 i'll check for the the version on the other side, but i never heard of an updated version being installed by him.

look at the file containing WITP - click on details - it should have a column with date and time of the file - this is the "time stamp" and the two time stamps between your two games should hopefully be the same.

EDIT: There can be a problem if you've restored the file from a backup... then Windows marks everything as having the same time and date... [8|] [:@]

Go to your .exe file ( in green ), right click and select properties ( results in red ).

Just as an observation - this really doesn't work if you've restored from a backup...
