WEIRD Vista bug?

Post by Nemo121 »

Well, it is near the end of my first week with Vista and it is turning into the most unpredictable operating system ever. Some old games work flawlessly, some new games work flawlessly but every so often something which is vista certified just refuses to load or CTDs etc.

This one's a doozy though. I can get WiTP to run without any problems. Straight install, update to 1.806 and then I modded in the Empire's Ablaze files. The game loads perfectly and runs perfectly. It even lets me save my PBEM turns BUT when I go to the SAVE folder ( where saved games are saved ) my witp003 and witp014 files are NOT there.

I then went back into WiTP, went into the load game screen and managed to LOAD the witp003 saved game file perfectly BUT when I look back in the SAVE folder I can't find it.

I've done a search on my system for witp003 etc but even with that I can't find the file. It is obviously on my system somewhere as I can access it in-game but I can't find it anywhere.

So, please tell me I'm not crazy and this is just something Bill Gates has done to screw with my mind. Bonus points if you can actually tell me what the hell happened and where the file is [8D]

Ah, I figured it out.... I ran WiTP in "Compatibility with XP" mode and so when I went into the SAVE folder it would not show me the "compatibility files". I had to change options so it would show me those files. Now they show up perfectly.

Well, it'll take a bit of getting used to that's for sure.

Give it time as Vista has some simple and not-so-simple differences. That said, after about six months I finally came to like Vista (and I hate change). Also since I knew the next Windows operating system would be based upon the core of Vista and not XP it made sense to just accept it and move forward.

A reward was that my new pc to run Vista also made WITP turns fly by very quickly.

Good luck,

Nemo,
There is no need to run WITP in XP compatibility mode nor any other Matrix game that I have. You just need to remember that the Program Files directory in Vista has special protections, so older games need to be installed in some other directory.

As far as Bill Gates trying to screw with your mind, he is just avenging your opponents for what you do to theirs. How many have had to be institutionalized as a result of your games? I enjoy following the AAR's of games you are involved in just to see some of the things that can be done.

I have installed every game into the Program Files (x86) directory in a GAMES folder. I may move them to see if that might be part of the problem.

Still can't get some newer games to work. They just CTD immediately ( Mass Effect and Fallout 3 ). Its weird but I can see that in the long-run Vista appears to be an improvement, it just needs some major getting used to.

Yes, it will increase your productivity by not allowing you to play any games... [:-] [8|] [:'(]
