strat bombing out of whack

Post by gwgardner »

One thing that needs fixing in the next round is strategic bombing. I just carried out my first strat bombing raid with a level one bomber on Paris. Paris lost 2 PPs, the bomber lost 3 strength points.

Even given the fact that the bomber was level 1, that will cost 100+ PPs to bring back to strength level 8. So I lose 100 PPs, he loses 2? Why would I ever spend another PP on strat bombing?

Essentially I've wasted all those 500+ PPs in producing that bomber.

Upgrade your bombers and take out cities that are out of range of his air cover. It is expensive to do but if you are interested in a war of PP attrition then it is a good strategy. You need 4-6 bombers to do it though.
Go for big targets, those of 10 pp's or more and zero them out. They come back at a rate of 1 per turn. Zero out 4 x 20pp cities and you cost him 80, 76, 72, etc.
Either your opponent concede the lost pp's or they transfer in air or build air. Try to fly regular air on missions near your targets first to get rid of any CAP. If the enemy contests you then both sides will take losses and, theoretically, the Allies are more than outproducing the Axis so it can be worth your while.

If I go for four strat bomber fleets at level 4, that would be 3200 PPs, the entire US PP pool for a year. Is it really worth it?

It depends. If you could knock out 1/3 of Germany's production for a year, is it worth it? You can definately put a drain on the Axis production if you go for it but it is an expensive proposition. It's definately a long haul decision.

Alright, I take it back, all the bad things I've said about strat bombing. As someone who took two years of calculus and NEVER understood the tiniest bit of it, I'm no math genius. I do however, now see how the losses the enemy suffers from a good strat bombing strike would add up over time.

It's a bit of a risk due to the cost but if you have a decent pp advantage it's worth pursuing. You need to decide on it fairly early because the higher you air level the better it works and it takes time to get the air units into position.
