Ketza is playing the allies and I am playing Japan. I do consider myself a wargammer. I’ve lurked and done a lot of reading in this forum. I’ve been really impressed with the level of enthusiasm displayed by the forum members here.
I am also pleasantly surprised to find that this game really draws me in. This is even better than when Steel Panzers came out
So I’ve played the AI for a while to get the hang of the game. From what I’ve read it looks like CHS/RHS mods were designed to fix deficiencies in the stock game. With AE coming out soon I really don’t see a reason to learn a mod but I do want to learn to use a production system. I understand that AE production will be different but I think the Japanese stock production will give me good training in the mean time.
This game is really until AE comes out and is, as the header to this AAR states, a learning curve for me. So if you have insights you would like to share on strategy or you wish to help me dissect some of the bonehead moves I’m sure to make please feel free to post your thoughts.
The following are the game rules:
1 day turns
historical first turn off
allied damage control on
advanced weather effects on
reinforcements static
PDU on
sub doctrine off for both sides
sub auto ops off
- One Jap port attack turn one
- Allied are only allowed to move ships which are already at sea in turn 1. No movement of ships in a port (manila, singapore, pearl harbor...) by the allied player.
-no overabuse of the turn one movement bonus (means no landings on turn 7 in Australia or something like that)
-max. aircraft in sea hex = "around 550".
-B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.
-4Es on nav attack min alt 10.000 ft
-ASW TF max 6 ships
-PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!)
-no sub invasions
-no mini para drops. As many para drops allowed as wished but they should involve at least 500-1000 men at min.
-cutting off units only with "real" combat units, not some 10 assault point base forces
-no use of dozens of small barge, MSW, ... TFs to guard ports (engine can´t handle dozens of small TFs in one hex)
-no exploit of dozens invasion TFs going at one base, means: if you need 300 ships for an invasion, put them into 5, 6 or 7 TFs but not in 60 TFs with 5 ships each.
-a maximum of 1 division equivalent (max 3 brigades or regiments) at atolls Not including misc art or base units.
This is a restart as I made a mistake with sub ops and left them on PC control. It's a learning curve thing - lol. I tried to keep everything the same as our first attempt at this game. It would have felt like cheating if I made changes after reviewing the combat report from our first aborted game.
My intent is to take out the PI, Borneo, Malaya, and then work myself through the DEI. I'll try to be aggressive in China but I think it wil be ok if it turns into a stalemate. I want to build a ring of protection with islands in the Pacific. If things free up fairly fast I might try for Hawaii.
KB is attacking Manila Port from the east coast of PI. This is my opening port attack per our house rules. I went for this opening move as Ketza said he regularly plays Japan and I wanted to try and throw him a curve. In e-mail coorespondance he said he normally goes for Manila himself on the opening turn. So much for surprise.
Mini-KB is coming up from the south near Daveo and will drive up through the Sulu Sea and into the South China Sea.
Bettys and Nells at Takao, Formosa are also on port attack of Manila. Another group of Bettys is hitting the AF at Clarke.
Bettys and Nells at Saigon are hitting the AF at Singapore.
Most of the invasions are pretty standard although I’ve added forces to the campaigns in Malaya, the PI, and for some of the Pacific Isles. I’ve also sent an assault force to Jolo.
In Manchukuo I’m moving a few units to Jehol and will pay the political points to send them to China. The units are either ENG, ARM, or ART plus a couple of the INF Garrison units. I’ve turned off reinforcements for all of the units in Manchukuo.
I’m attacking the Chinese unit in Nanchang to try and drive them out. And I’m attacking Hong Kong of course.
Para units are hitting Miri and Jesselton in Borneo. Standard invasions hit Kuching and Brunei.
I used my few mine laying subs to mine Batavia.
I've got heavy sub patrols with my long-leg subs along the west coast of the US and OZ and I am moving a lot of my short-leg subs into the DEI.
I’ve made very few changes to production. I’ve reduced the number of Claude being produced and cancelled all Nate production. There are some minor increases to producing Bettys and Zeroes, along with more of the Nakajima engines. In other AARs I see some players make all sorts of changes but they must have a few games under their belt. The best advice seems to be to make few changes until I really understand the system.
Below is the Combat Report for turn 1. The port attack at Manila is devistating.

** 2 to 1 odds is good and the reduction of forts to 4 is even better. While running test turns to make sure my convoys arrived where I wanted I almost always had 0 to 1 odds. I don't think I've seen the fort reduced in any first turn I've run.

- The 11th Ind. Brigade from Nanchang has caught up with the enemy ground unit they kicked out of Nanchang the turn before and will attack. I'm pretty sure the enemy LCU must still be disorganized...

- Two Chutai of Sonia are flying out of Chengting and will be hitting Yenen.

- At this stage of the game the Allies have lost 42 ships for 315 points. Almost all of these are from Manila.
- Allied Aircraft 63/Japanese 34
- I'm still modifiying a lot of sub deployments and many-many of the subs are still in route to their assigned theatres.
- I've set the 38th Div @ Hong Kong to defense as disruption is above %60. Not a lot of losses according to the TOE just disruption. Future Objective is at 52.
- The 20th and 19th Engineer Rgts along with the 23rd Army Corps HQ are headed to Hong Kong and should be there next turn.

- KB will stay near Guiuan as as spotter planes see several merchant ships in the area.
- Mini-KB is dropping back towards Jolo while patroling the Sulu Sea
- I'm still moving troops, creating a few new transport convoys and monitoring previous orders. I didn't take very good notes this turn. Right now the game is at December 25th in real time and I'm hoping to toss some of these turns up so I can get to our current date.
- Why does my picture look different and 'bulky' compared to others I see posted? Is there a better tool then Paintbrush that is reasonably priced or free? What do other people use?

Definately a pair of scary turns, this and the last. I've bumped CAP up to %80 for KB due to zero losses and I have all of the DB on ASW patrol. I've got several TF of DD on ASW running down the route that KB is coming up on from Siagon in hopes of killing or at least surpressing his subs. Mini-KB is also running down to where KB is and will pass KB and then return up to Saigon. My hope is that the Mini-KB will trail far enough to provide coverage for the tankers that took bombs last turn and are limping up to Indochina.
In the PI I'm still waiting on my troops to move into Clarke.
In Malaya My troops in Taiping are set to attack.
In Yenen my troops are still on defense while licking their wounds.
I'm running additionla supplies to the PI and am getting ready for a push into Palembang and the nearby bases.
William is forward deployed in Clark and Naga. I assume when he falls back to Manila I'll have to bring over a large hammer to take that base.
I've got troops marching to Puerto Princesa from Taytay along with troops marching to Iloilo from Roxas. I have a foot in the door at Dadjangus and will push to Davao as soon as I can get additional troops and support elements in place.
Most of my air units are in Laoag.
The TF near Tuguegarao is a bombardment TF moving towards Naga. I plan to do a coordinated strike there with ground, air, and naval support.
I really prefer playing against a person vs the AI.
Good thoughts. I actually came up with the transport improvisation on the next turn with a transport unit of Tabbys set to send over one of the two ENG units with air support that are currently stationed at Kuching. Weather does funny things to my best-laid plans - [8|] The weather forecast called for thunderstorms so my thought was that I'd sneak over a unit of zeroes plus transport my engineers over under the cover of the weather. My WAG was that William would not be able to get his bombers into the air.
I guess I was wrong... [:D]
My zeroes went over but the engineers did not. Williams bombers did brave the weather to send over a care-package to Palembang. My zeroes did a good job flying CAP but they were dinged up pretty good. [:(]
What I found interesting about this attack was Williams B-17s... If he has roughly 70 of them in Java then that means he doesn't have any at...
Hmmm - I think it's time to dust off the KB and send them off on a little expedition...
