New Scn - Achtung Invasion

Post by GrumpyMel »

I just uploaded a new scenerio to the sandbox. My first serious attempt at creating one from scratch (rather then modding an existing one). If anyone feels like giving it a whirl, I'd love to hear your feedback. Here is the description...

==============
This scenario is intended to provide the flavor of the Normandy landings in June of 1944. Note that the scenario is not intended to be a historical representation. The map is completely fictional and even though many of the units borrow the names of historical units. No serious attempt was made to simulate the TO&E of the actual historical forces involved. The scenario is intended to be fun and somewhat balanced to play.

Some new SFT's have been added...some familiar ones have had some of thier settings tweak. So be advised to check out the stats for your units. There are currently no events written for the scenario although some may be added in a future version.

The Allies start the first turn. As the surprise of the invasion and the airborne landings was a major factor in the historical event, Axis air power is not set to intercept intialy. This should provide Allied player the opportunity to drop thier paratroops on the inital turn without worrying about enemy fighters. After Turn 1 all bets are off however and the Axis is free to set thier planes to intercept. Please note that ranges for all aircraft are significantly increased over the standard game.

The Axis Player cannot build ships and thus has no way of invading England. The game is intended to be played until July 5th 1944 and then players should determine victory by counting the Allied Players VP's.... However players are free to setup alternative VP conditions. Nothing has been hard coded.

Allied VP's
0-5 Decisive Axis Victory
6-18 Axis Victory
19-27 Draw
28-37 Allied Victory
38+ Decisive Allied Victory

Thanks for the new scenario. I’m not a big sticker for historically correct scenarios, but I do like challenging military situations that are set in a plausible historical background. I plan to have a bit of fun in Normandy.

From my review of the scenario.

Looks great. Started plaing it against the AI. To my eyes (very interested in military history, but not specificly in Normandy campaign) the OOB seems very authentic. Should be renamed Invasion in Normandy or something like that. I think it has the required authenticity.

Maybe you could add some nice intro message with picture and background text regarding the scenario? Also i got some pic errors. Dont know if its only me though.

@ Grymme: Have you changed the name of the graphics folder? When you unzip the file a graphics folder is created named "Achtung-Invasion". But the game looks for a folder named "Invasion". So, you have to rename it.

Have had only a short look at the file yet. But will play it asap. Looks very interesting. Thx for the scenario [:)]

Thanks guys. The scenerio definately is not historicaly accurate as the map is entirely fictional (though I did try to make it "feel" right) as is one of the german divisions. Not to mention that the French 2nd Armored didn't land in France until Auguest. Also the Luftwaffe had only something like 300 planes available to try to oppose the landings while the allies I think had something on the order of 3000+.

At some point I may try an actual historical scenerio of Normandy, but for this one I'll stick with fictional with a historic "falvor".

The scenerio is definately still in sandbox phase. I'll fix the graphics folder thing on the next update. I've also identified a couple of tweaks I want to make from my own play testing. I'm going to extend the air ranges even more as the beaches aren't in intercept range for allied fighters. I'm also going to increase the build costs for all aircraft. Although air-power in the scenerio is probably even understated compared to the historical event (reading some of the accounts of german forces trying to get to the invasion area while dealing with allied air interdiction really brings that home), it's more dominant then I really want for play balance.

The starting air assets are about where I want them, but it's too easy to build more and to replace losses...encouraging pretty agressive behavior in air attacks. I'm going to address this by increasing build costs for air and probably give the Axis a bit more flak.

I also would like to try to write a few simple events and possibly even some action cards. At the very least I'm going to attempt Grymmes intro message suggestion to add some flavor to it.

Aliright, I just uploaded an update. I fixed the graphics folder name. I adjusted air ranges so that the mainland is in intercept range for allied fighters in England. I raised the cost for building all air units to try to reduce thier dominance a little bit in the game. I also added a couple simple events. Just a flavor event for June 6th...and a simple event that checks VP points on July 6th and anounces the victor... it doesn't stop the game however, you can still keep playing after that if desired.
