Newbie asks how does Cross differ from War

Loved Wacht am Rhein. Is this essentially the same game in a different theatre of war?

I would say yes. The difference is that there is no strategic layer in CoI. The in-game graphics are very similar and the way it plays is almost the same as WaR. To me it appeals even more than WaR because of the different setting. The battles in CoI are more on open terrain and require good tactical skill in using armour combined with infantry. One snag of this game is the unlimited availability of armour which makes scenarios like Prokhorovka (i.e. Kursk) no fun to play. CoI is no tank warfare simulator. BUT(!) there are several mods available, for example the excellent Grossdeutschland mod in which you follow this Division throughout the entire war in the east. Armour capacity is strictly limited in this mod.

Have a go for it! But please be aware: It is a real time game.[;)]

Thanks, I will give Cross a try when I can afford it. Love WaR but since all the scenarios are in winter I find the maps somewhat drab and repetitive. Also, the Strategic Layer is fun but very abstract so its absence is no very great loss. Thanks again.

Cross of Iron has some larger squads, of up to ten men. The total number of squads stays the same though.

There are two "strat layers": a linear campaign and MMCC III. MMCC III has advantages and disadvantages when compared with the Wacht am Rhein strat layer.
