Honestly it depends what you do on the computer, for example I have Vista 64 simply for extra memory, and hell everythings switching to 64bit anyway. Secondly when you get vista 64 installed right, you won't have problems, only bad side between vista and XP is vista takes up little more video memory, so high end gaming is better off with XP. When I say "getting vista to install right" seems many people have problem with it, however I got a house of over half dozen vista PC's without problems. Honestly its not better then XP in long run, but I chose Vista 64 since the disk comes with 64 and 32bit vista pro edition.

If you can get a higher end PC, would go 64 vista, you'll like the extra ram and such, if your PC isn't so gunned go with XP. Also if you play games like world of warcraft, best to stick with XP so you can get extra Frames per second out of it, if you don't and don't run any high end programs, Vista will be fast enough.

Difference between 2 are XP gets around 15 more Frames per second then Vista, vista looks nicer though in long run.

Forget Windows 7, if you have an option over XP or Vista 64, go vista 64 to get the extra memory out of it, when W7 comes out go 64 bit on it.

I installed and tested W7, its nothing more then Vista with few bugs worked out of it. Nothing to interesting for me to even leave it on my PC over a week.

Yep Vista supports DX10, not sure about XP, I believe DX10 is related to video cards only, certain video cards newer then 8600GTX are DX10 Enabled. [Citation needed] Yeah I don't feel like researching up DX10, I would check into it though. Yes XP support is ending soon, however there are so many Tech websites and forums out there you won't find a question that can't be answered, I know about 50 of em if you ever need help.

There are fanboys for Vista/XP/Linux/MAC everywhere, everyone has an opinion, sadly its like this, a2m zero can do circles around a corsair in a dogfight, however decent pilot the corsair wins every time. You can debate that for hours, same with XP/Vista.

Honestly an O/S depends on what you use it for, example you buy a mini van for a large family, if your single you buy a Porsche. Same related to O/S, just depends what you are going to use it for.

I will "skip" Vista and wait for 7 to come out.  Running XP for a long time and I am comfortable with it.  Don't feel like dealing with the frustration that comes with Vista...plenty of "pop ups" from Windows from what Feinder is experiencing.  I suppose after a while you get them all taken care of and then its life back to normal.

What frustrations come with vista? I really don't get why people don't like it before testing it out, far as the popups go its either spyware or User account control which can be shut off.

From day one I had UC shut off and enjoy vista quite a bit, I gotta say that by far the most annoying thing windows ever had.

Dang Marky........you smoke another PC already?

Get a Gateway FX4710-UB003A

That is what I have and there is no better off the shelf PC on the market for gaming.

Vista 64 Bit
6GB RAM
Quad Core Intel Q9300
640 GB hard drive
NVIDIA 9800GT

I have not had a single issue getting any games to run on this. It runs Crysis (think that is spelling) at highest settings with no lag at all. Actually look down at the power light to make sure the thing is on it is so quiet.

Bought from Best Buy in 2008 for about a grand.

The last link has the better quality review IMO.

I hear everyone gripe obout the DDR2 RAM but honestly I cannot tell the difference or see that it is effecting me any.

hmm, not bad a price.

Gateway makes good stuff IMHO

our 1st ever computer, that can actually be called a computer(not counting the 1 my dad gave me 1 in 96 or so just before he died) was a Gateway, and when mine fried and i crashed my moms(this 1) shortly therafter(not my fault, the HD died[:D]) i was on that 1 for a month till Dell support FINALLY got this 1 fixed. Dude, im never getting a Dell[:D]. absolutely frakked support. they put us on the phone to Inida, and then we asked for anywhere but India cuz the chick was clueless, so guess where they routed us next?

Philppines![:D]

and that gateway? is from 1998, and STILL works. ORIGINAL parts too. ill think about the Gateway [:)]

what ive been drooling over is 1 from here

I'm from XP, and have Vista a new box.  Frankly, there are a lot of features about Vista that I find very annoying.  If you're an XP user and like XP, probably just stick wit XP.  But...

If you're a gamer (as in the MMORPGs or FPS), you'll probably want to go with Vista.  You'll need the 64-bit version soon enough to use the extra RAM.  Right now, nobody is using anything that high-up, but it will come.

As for Windows-7.  Dunno much about it.  Vista may become the new Windows-ME, but it -will- be supported for next 5 - 8 years or so, which is about the same projected useful life of whatever box you're building a considering putting Vista on anyway.

Yep. That would be one of the annoying things about Vista.

Another would be, "...is trying to run program.exe, this may be harmful to your computer, do you wish to allow it?" I stuck the CD in the drive, and clicked on the icon. Of course I want to run the program.

Another would be, "...I don't like installing anything in the program directory, even tho most applications go there by default. So we're going to make it very annoying for you to do so..." (in which case, you just create a common direcotry, and put everything under there).

Again, there are annoying things about Vista. But it does have more robust memory capabilities.
