Calculation of AA cover

Post by DSFletcher »

As I recall in PacWar you could see the AA value of the various escort ships like DD's & CL's to determine which you would send w/ CV TF's and which would be used for convoy duty. Is this an issue in UV? Do you have go into each ship screen to see what the AA loadout is which seems like a lot of micromanagement?

I totally agree on this point. I'd love to see a rating for quick viewage, It is a pain in the rump to have to look over every ship for AA capability. I second that motion Speaker of the House!

Refernce

Post by NorthStar »

What would be nice would be if someone could create a comparison chart for all ships by class, along with a list of which ships belong to which class. This would give the information needed, without requireing any program modifications.

Anyone out there really, really, REALLY bored? ;)

Chris H is working on it - with some kind of global ASW & AA value for each ship.

AA Values

Post by Ron Saueracker »

Remember that the AA values of ships, along with ASW and Surface Combat Values, will change due to refits.

This may be a dead post but......

If you spend about an hour with the editor you can add a suffix to each ship name you wish to indicate its capabilities :

ie add an "a" for better than normal AA
add an "a+" for exceptionally good AA
add a "s" for good surface use (strong armour, lots of torps etc.)
etc, etc.

Then save the scenario as a mod and play it instead of the original. It means you only have to check a ships capabilities once and then after that you will know its capabilites for the rest of the game by just seeing its name.

Even though ships upgrade their armaments over time (at least the USN does), if a ship starts with a large no of small caliber AA, it will end up with a large no of med AA and therefore still be true to its suffix. For example, one USN DD class has 12 20mm at the start while another class has 4. The first would be considered an "a" suffix ship while the other probably wouldn't rate a suffix. When they upgrade, the first ends up with 8 40mm and 4 20mm while the second ends up with 8 20mm. The suffix would still be relative when selecting ships. Until either a Flak rating is added to top level ship entries on displays or a ship reference list is produced, I will find this the best way to reduce time spent buggerising around with ship screens for TF selection.

As a side note, in using the editor for this purpose, I have spotted several ship and squadron entries in scenarios that were "scrambled" and therefore could not appear as reinforcements in the game even though they were meant to. Helps justify the hour spent (the girlfriend doesn't see it that way).

The strengths and weaknesses for every ship is very important to me when making a TF. The way I figured this out was to:

From the available ships list, Using a pen and paper I catogorized every ship with first it's class, then it's *endurance*. The Endurance number will allow you to seperate the different models of a class, with the exception of a few with different speeds, etc. Once every endurance rating is listed under each class catagory, I simply use the numbers of Guns, AA, Torpedo, and Depth Charge to give me quick refrence on the ships abilities. An example of what I'm talking about is:

Destroyers-
Endurance Guns/AA/Torp/Depth Notes
5750 6/8/8/6 Good Anti-Sub
7500 8/12/8/2 Good AA/Speed 37
7500 4/8/16/2 Good Torp
8000 4/8/16/2 Good Torp
6250 8/20/5/8 Best All Around
etc.etc.etc....

As you can see, this system provides quick refrence for the strengths of each ship. And it was painless to create.

I forgot to emphasize the fact that there are different versions(classes) of DD's, for example, with the same endurance. So be sure and double-check.

Excellent ...

What would be wonderful is if you could do a small doc with these infos (ie : Excel sheet) - I could then post it in the UV Fansite :)
