Detailed combat and unit... How do you do it?

Post by Franck »

Hi, I'm not an expert of the time and I just wanted to know how you guys are using the different arms of your armies.

1)Cavalry:
In detailed battle I mostly use them to harass the ennemy or hunt for artillery wich seems really daunting to take on with anything but CAV. I harass the ennemy by moving a cav in contact with the ennemy and then charge. Most of the time my ennemy manage to form a square and then on it's next turn it reform in colums. I then run away with my cav. But this is advantageous because I force them to stop moving for a turn. If they are close to my line it alows me to shoot em up while they are in squares.

Because of this use I make of CAV I much rather use lancers-light cav then cav-Heavy cav. And yes I'm interested in knowing how do you use your Heavy cav do you find the heavy cav is worth it?

2)Infantry:
Basically this is your workhorse. It takes the ground and dies keeping it. I find this is one of the most powerful arm. It needs to be supported, I know... But it's awesome. It shoots Cav like crazy and there's alot of upgrade that turns these guys in reall killing machine.

I mostly use lt.infantry or Jager. They are better than your normal infantry and have a way easier time against artillery.
Oh yeah... Always aim at attacking or defending from a different heigth than artillery with these guys. Also, if your ever stuck in the open against artillery without jager-lt.infantry charge the guns. Sure it won't work if they are supported... But if they are and you don't have guns of your onw your probably in trouble!

3)Artillery:
Slow, ponderous killing machine. This will rip anything to pieces. I don't like it to much. So I don't build much (on top of that you can capture it, that's why I like figthing russians). But it is really strong. I set it up between 2 good infantry and just look at it rip the ennemy apart.

Combining it all:
I believe I like Infantry so much because the computer build so much cavalry! It often as like two third of it's armies in cav. So I keep my infantry in strong formation and keep marching forward... It kills those buggers.

Now I'm really interested in what use you put your heavy cav to. What do you do with guards? or any other unit
Thanks

I don't knkow about the game, but in reality, the Guards were used as reserves. They were usually thrown in the battle only at the decisive points. Heavy cavalry was used against infantry not armed with spears.

I always try to move offensively and fight defensively. If I am to advance towards the upper part of this post, I would form a formation that looks something like this:

I-A-I-A-I-A-I
C S S S C
C C C C

Were I=Inf, A=Arty, C=Cav, S=Supply.
Nowere in my formation is the gap between any two units more than two hexes. After forming up I will advance towards the enemy position and try to lure him to attack me. Any unit that comes close to my front line will soon rout after a few rounds of arty and inf fire.

hmmm, I do more of a cowhorn idea (or if I know the enemy is weak or strong, a one sided hook)

your pretty strong in Arty and Cav, I tend to have double your Inf

(once I am in gear, I try for a Inf Corps, a Combined Inf/Arty Corps and then either a Cav Corps, or just Cav with the Army Container)

(if it is my major Shock Army and it has been in action for a while, I tend to have a Inf, Arty and Cav Corps, but this one moves much slower in battle)
