Verdict?

This sequel to the award-winning Crown of Glory takes Napoleonic Grand Strategy to a whole new level. This represents a complete overhaul of the original release, including countless improvements and innovations ranging from detailed Naval combat and brigade-level Land combat to an improved AI, unit upgrades, a more detailed Strategic Map and a new simplified Economy option. More historical AND more fun than the original!

Verdict?

Post by PunkReaper »

I finally controlled myself and held off purchasing this one. I didn't get into COG the first time around and I was just wondering what everyone thought of this version. Is it a rubbish bug ridden mess or the shining light of Napoleonic Wargaming? Is it an improvement on the first COG and should I just pay the money and unleash the dogs of war.....?

Lay down the dough.
It's a gem of a game.
And as with FOF, the devs will keep making it even better in the time to come, so it's a safe investment in a financially unsafe time...[;)]

I had the first COG too and couldn't really enjoy it.

My first impressions on COG-EE after a few hours of play :
- the gameplay is very interesting capturing all the main strategical/operational/tactical concepts & challenges of the era
- the possibility to run a simplified economy helps a lot the learning curve
- the AI looks OK on the strategy; I was a little dispointed by the AI for the detailed battle (two easy victories with Russia against France in 1805 and I was in numerical inferiority)
- I don't like the UI and it's IMHO very subpar with other 'similar' games I bought recently (PDX EUIII, AGEOD ACW). Seems less intuitive.

I have but 2 concerns:
1)Change protectorates: this is currently beieng addressed by the dev.
2)Improve the Strategc AI... Namely (and this is in my opinion the main problem)... Make the AI surrender some times... It just seems to cling to a war for way to long given you time to claim province, wipe there army out and get so much surrender points... When it would be way easyer for the AI to get an easy 300 or 50 experience and not loose everything.

I like the game so far.

The way things work together is quite nice.  The strategy combined with diplomacy and economics is wonderful.

As someone else mentioned the UI is a little bit kludgy.  I don't mean its broken, just it seems once I know what I want to do, I often then have to wonder how to get the UI to do that.  It hasn't stopped me playing by any stretch and I am sure I will get accustomed to it soon.

This is COG with some needed additions and a lot of polishing.  Still not perfect, but the original was an excellent game.  IF you like the period and wargames in general I dont know why you didnt buy COG in the first place, but I would say definetely buy COG: EE!

I didn't play the original COG, so can't comment. But my experience of this game is very positive. The Diplomacy system in this game (even in single player) is one of the best I've seen. The game has a real flavour of the period and each nation has individual strengths and challenges. The AI in single player won't ever outwit a human (but when ever does it), but is capable of pulling some suprises out the hat. Multiplayer is great.

There are a few bugs, i.e the depot / supply system, but they are fixable, and I understand, they are mostly being sorted out.

This is one of the best strategy games I have played since TOAW.

Multiplayer is also loads of fun.
