Fatal Error 818

Post by Q-Ball »

I loaded the game on an old, Windows XP computer. This message occurs at startup. What does it mean?

All fatal errors basically mean the same: do a full reinstall.

I did, that's where I am confused. Happened after 2 installs. Shall I go for three?

Yes, but do it step by step.

Uninstall the game again. Check for left over directories.

Install the game in a new directory. DO NOT PATCH. Start the game, see if the error comes up.

If not, patch to 1.804 comprehensive. Start the game, see if the error comes up.

If not, patch to 1.806 revised. Start the game, see if the error comes up.

You did patch to 1.804 comprehensive before applying 1.806, right?

New reply; purchased new computer w/64 bit vista and received fatal error 818. Did the uninstall and tired a new install. Version 1.50 loaded but does not work properly. Areas where information should be written has blocks of colored space. Unable to find download for a version 1.804. When do the 1.86 install get the fatal error again.

You will have to do the 1.804 comprenhesive patch before you do the 1.806 update patch. You will need to uninstall completly, reinstall with 1.5 and solve the display problems before proceding. Vista throws a bunch of curves, good luck.

You absolutely need to do the 1.804 comprehensive patch before doing the 1.806 patch... the 1.804 comp patch should be in the download section (at least it was apparently there for other people who just installed it.)

With Vista, DO NOT install into the "Program Files" directory.

OK; tried & tried. Deleted and insatlled many times. Last attempt then made file direct for matrix games and in that folder WITP. Downloaded version 1.50 into it. Works better but still does not work correct. Majority of the time the information in the lower right corner just is not there. Screen blinks and briefly shows it for say 1/10 of a second.

Found the ver 1.804 - thanks.

Any ideas?????

Unfortunately, it is sounding like your original install is corrupt... are you installing from a disk? Do you have a backup you can install from???

You could try installing your 1.5 to a different computer (Xp basd preferably) to see if the same problem arises... if it does, then it appears your install files have been damaged... if not, something else might be going on.

Make sure you are proceeding STEP by STEP per the above. One step at a time!!!

Ok; once again I deleted everything and did a search for War in the Pacific. Did find a folder that I was unaware of. Emptied recycle bin. Did a new download of version 1.50 and installed it. I did not install it in the Matrix Games folder as I had in the pass but instead used a new folder. I HAVE NOT INSTALLED any other versions yet. Game still does not work. After computer turn no writing/information in lower section of screen. A couple times from trying to click on diff tabs from the top of the screen the information would show up but I couldn't do anything like forward to the next base. Wish I would have bought a disk now. Any suggestions. I beleieve that I followed the instructions that you suggested.

If it won't write are you sure you haven't tried to right click the folder and made it sure its not read-only? Sometimes it can happen, check your WiTP folder and check the files, virus scanners are crazy about changing files to read-only (considering WITP reads/writes often the virus scanner might believe its a threat). Twice on my Vista64 machine with AVG it has happened, mainly my PBEM saved games, after I exit the game the virus scanner scans the newly edited file causing it to change to read-only.

See if you have a backup of the original download. If not, then:

You might try downloading it again... you need order number and/or original credit card number, iirc.

This is unfortunately something of a pain, and you have to contact Matrix to do this if it is over 1 year, iirc.

EDIT: Again, see if you can install your 1.5 to a different computer if possible (preferably Xp based machine)... if you can't install to Xp, that will confirm the file corruption being the most likely problem.
