1792 Napoleon COULD NOT sail the Ocean Blue!

Post by Anthropoid »

Hey guys! I'm an old FoF player (and I see still have beta-tester status [:)]; will have to get caught up with where things are there and get the latest DLs for FoF). I took a _short_ hiatus from gaming. Mostly I've taken a 'more or less' permanent hiatus from Civilization, a game that I've played probably more than any other.

Over the years I've just been drawn more and more to the Matrix kinda games . . .

So I bought, DLed and installed this Wonderful, Amazing, Superlative, Excellent game! (but then I'd expect nothing less from the makers of FoF! [:)]) and I've already been enjoying it quite a bit.

My first main question: is that 1792 Scenario Fricking Difficult (Mr. Bigglesworth) or is it just me!?

Not an orthodox thing to do, but in the interest of creating cross-fertilization between Civvers and Coggers I created an AAR of sorts over at my main hangout, The 1BC Civ Forums.

If I don't want to get run over by 117,000 Austrians in Luxembourg in Sept 1792, any suggestions for what I should do, apart from play the 1805 Scenario!?

BTW, what is the Difference between: "1792 Poland" and "1792 Bavaria" and just plain "1792?"

1792 Poland and 1792 Bavaria allow you to play those Nations, which are normally minor AI-controlled Nations. The game substitutes one of these powers for Sweden, which becomes a minor Nation for that scenario.

In order to play Poland or Bavaria, select the 1792 scenario for one of them, select Sweden as your Nation, along with whatever other choices (Simple econ, Advanced econ, etc) and then start the game.

1792 by itself is the standard scenario for that period, where you can play any of the 8 normal Major pwers.

I don't have much experience playing 1792, so sorry, no strategy advice I can offer [;)]

Thanks Russian!

I'm noticing that my units have very low % chance to change formations. I think that this might partly be because I've bolstered my units with troops militias. In any event, these starting troops in 1792 are even more useless than in the start of Forge of Freedom.

Any suggestions on how I can get their ability to change from Column to Line up above 10 and 20%?

It seems the time frames for each "turn" in the Brigade Detail Battles are quite a bit different than in FoF too, so maybe the idea is that it might take hours and hours to get your units are formed up?

I don't see my Generals attached to particular Brigades. Can I not move a General from one unit in Detailed Battle to another? In FoF it is the 'g' key IIRC.

It's the same in COG.

My best surgestion is to DO NOT enter Luxembourg before youve defeated the austrian army. As you are fairly week, I think your best choice is to unite Armee du Nord and Armee centrale in Champagne along with the schwiss guard and wait. At least it worked for me [;)]

Yep! It worked for me too!

First time, I tried merging best units into Armee Centre + Swiss Guard, and barging right into Lux. Got fairly badly beaten (though not terrible, using the Detailed Combat).

Second time, I had the other two provinces on the frontier (Lorraine and the one on the coast with Calais?) somewhat garrisoned, and my beefed up Armee Centre in Champagne with a Depot (~97K troops, though many Green and Unsteady). Austrians attacked with about 45,000 but then also called reinforcements.

I managed to hold them back and once it was pretty clear I was gonna win, hit "Resolve Instant" and it finished with a French victory (16K casualties for Aus; 7K for France).

I feel like I got some pretty good Treaties set up (loans to Spain and England at 25% interest and with clauses about them scuttling ships, as well as a Defensive Pact, and with England also a Royal Marriage), I'm trying to reap in as many horses and iron as I can from trade, and I'm blockading the Prussian ports and using two diplomats to pressure for peace. All in all, I'd say I am probably off to a pretty good start for a nice fun long campaign!

Paris can really crank out some Seasoned troops, so my plan is to get all my armies fully stocked with Seasoned troops, and also have a bit extra to top up loses quickly and for garrison duty. I reckon that will take a couple years all together.

I also now have the Generals transfer thing working. The presence of a general with a brigade/division in COGEE is by a flag whereas in FoF it is by a guy on horseback. Also in FoF you can see the Generals info when you select the unit.

I normally hit both Provinces, trying to mass your troops, and then keep them with in range to support who is needing help

the Prussians will normally get to you first

if you can, you want to be on defence, your not too good yet, and being forced to attack is going to be HARD if you not a old pro

besides hurting the Prussians the goal is to take a gun or two from them

(with treaties, try to distrack the Prussians, so they should fall back if hurt)

a fair fight with the Ossites is normally a major Victory, so be ready for the chance

(I got a AAR about work, covering this campaign and some early battles)

for troops, form your line when not in a Threaten Zone, support your guns if you got any, support your troops, use Cav to force the Enemy inf into Squares

(remember Frederick the Great, to defend all is to defend nothing, and to an extent, to attack all is to attack nothing, work over, maul what you can, instead of trying to attack all along the line)
