Q1 The torpedo the U-boat fired circled back and sank the U-boat?

Which American sub accomplished this feat in the South China Sea?

Nope [:)]
Lets sum up Q1,
Part 1: The British crew torpedoed and sank a surfaced submarine. The first crew to achieve this.
Part 2: somewhat similar to Part 1, with one major difference.
Now, read carefully at Part 1, and Part 2 should reveal itself [;)]

My guess is they sank/torpedoed a submerged submarine too... :-)
Or got sunk them self my another uboat. Ops thats 2 guesses.

Q5: Were helicopters in use during WWII?

Q5 Yes. 1 prototype used by a nazi leader (forget who) who in 1945 used it to escape from the city where he was the designated commander. Was it Breslau?
More than just 1 prototype.
This is the Fl282V-21 Kolibri (http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/v/475/2/0, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flettner_Fl_282)

Watched Top10 on discovery the other day. According to them the FA 223 flew alrdy in 1940 and was even supposed to be used in the rescue of Mussolini, but that was abandonded as it didnt work on the day of the operation. Looking at google it seemed a number of fa 223 was used well before the kolibri.

Kind regards,

Hehe yup, they were the first crew to torpedo and sink a submerged sub.
In February 1945 Germany decieded to send some of their research to Japan hoping that this would force the US to divert most of its troops to the Pacific. Plans for the Me262 and parts for jet engines were packed on the sub U-864. This sub was sunk by the HMS Venturer under Launders. The wreck was rediscovered in 2003, and is now causing a headache for the Nrwegian government as the wreck also contained 67 tons of mercury that is now leaking into the ocean.

I was not saying it was the first helicopter.
The question was "Were helicopters in use during WWII?" to which someone answered "Yes. 1 prototype".
I was just pointing out that much more than only 1 prototype of Helicopter had flew during WW2.

Nope, wasnt meant as responce/correction of you, Patrice(hope i spell it correctly been a while since i visted ur website). More to the thing that issue of a prototype being used in 1945. I was merely as u trying to point out that choppers was in operational use well before that. As obviously is the true in the case of the FA 223. Why his part was included in my original quote too.

Kind regards,

I posted the question at the bottom a few days back as part of an incorrect guess on one of Terge's questions. Actually in rechecking the source, its hard to say if it was the China Sea or South China Sea. Anyone want to take a shot at the answer.

Q1 The torpedo the U-boat fired circled back and sank the U-boat?

Which American sub accomplished this feat in the South China Sea?

From JGN
Capital ships were mostly named after provinces, although Kongo-class, being battlecruisers, were named after mountains.
Large, Heavy or "Type A" Cruisers were named mostly after mountains, but Mogami-class were named after rivers as they were originally laid down as Type-B (light) cruisers.
Light, Small, or "Type B" cruisers were generally named after rivers & streams.
First class destroyers were named after environmental or calendar names.
Second-class destroyers were named after plants.

Q3. Dragons (and if this is right, I think I read it in this forum, maybe in answer to this question)

Q6. Tomoyuki Yamashita

And JGN left out my question about the USS Tang (oops)

r.e. Q3 I meant quite awhile back, not Warspite's recent post here

From JGN

Aircraft carriers and seaplane carriers were mostly named after mythical flying creatures.

Kaga: "Increased Joy", a province name (Kaga was originally laid down as a battleship).
Akagi: "Red Castle", a volcano in the Kanto area (Akagi was originally laid down as a battlecruiser).

It is considered unlucky to rename a ship after it has been named.

JGN replies to one of the Qs

(Q6) What self recognized war criminal received the Philippines highest award for WW2? (McArthur was refused this award because he left the Philippines).

(A6) Lieutenant Edwin Price Ramsey led the last United States Army's last cavalry charge at the village of Morong, Bataan, on January 16, 1942.
After General Wainwright surrendered all United States forces in the Philippines he formed and led the guerilla forces in Central Luzon. Where he fought the Japanese and the Communist Huk guerillas.
He believed he was a war criminal because General Wainwright surrendered the Army was and he continued to fight. He sent critical intelligence information to General Douglas MacArthur in preparation for the liberation of the Philippines. After his return, General MacArthur personally awarded him the Distinguished Service Cross for his guerilla activities.

Awards by the Philippine government: Cross of Valor - Sagisag Ng Kagitingan, Distinguished Conduct Star, Distinguished Service Star, Legion of Honor - Commander Degree, Gold Cross, Wounded Personnel Medal, Philippine Defense Medal, and Philippine Liberation Medal.

He retired from the Army as a Colonel and was made an honorary Green Beret July 16, 2001.

Note: He is not on Wikipedia read the books on him. Several times he was as close as 6 feet from Japanese troops and his daylight bicycle ride through occupied Manila was very interesting 8)

Time to decloak on the Wargamer's WWII Quiz book, to be published in honor of Steve Hokanson's heroic work in completing Matrix World In Flames. As described in this thread, the goal is to publish the book on MWIF's release date, July 27, 2009. All author's royalties will be donated to Steve as a "thank you" from the community.

To get there in time, I need to enlist your help in "crowd-sourcing" the editing and publication. I have created a Google Form that should be accessible to anyone regardless of whether you have a Google ID. The URL is:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform ... M3JkTkE6MA..

As the form explains, you must agree to the contributor's contract, which essentially says you are donating your efforts, but will receive an author's copy of the book, and you must affirm that what you are contributing is not copyrighted. the form is set up to allow the entry of up to four questions and answers. You can do this as many times as you want. If you really want to get industrial about this (and please do!), just send me an email to wfz at nimblebooks doht com and I will add you as a collaborator to the Google Doc.

(Fixed authentication issue. Should work without ID now.)

Q3: During the later stages of the war, the IJN experimented by rebuilding some of their BBs, into what?
Carriers !

Aye, or a gobetween but I'll allow carriers [;)] Either CVs with BB guns in the front, or BBs with CV deck in the rear

The hybrids weren't the last carries Japan tried to build. The third Yamato battlship, Shinano, was converted to a straight carrier. No battleship guns.
