Squads

Post by jeffk3510 »

I recently split up a carrier fighter squad and sent half to Midway and kept the other half and Pearl.... I then brought back the one from Midway and they DIDN'T COMBINE back at Pearl. They just stayed split.

HQ of this squadron is there, 60k supply, morale is fine as is fatigue.....

SO I disbaned the fragment unit into the parent... everything is great except it says the fragment will come back in 90 days....

WHAT THE HECK....

Ok, that is fine if it wont.

Just wondering still why they wouldnt combine.... I know there was only the parent, and this one fragment AT the same base, two different leaders, good morale, low fatigue.... O well.

It is one big unit now, I am happy.

Thanks [:)]

What patch level are you on? A looong time ago it used to ask if you want the fragment to come back (although rtrapasso is right, it doesn't really) but that changed in one of the patches, IIRC. So I'm worried you have an old rev.

The first the to is if the unit at Midway got fragmented.  I would look it up on the ground AC screen.  Units won't recombine if there is a fragment elsewhere.

Double checked ALL aircraft on map in the database selection at the top... whatever it is called. and there were two units, and they are both at Pearl, and it DID ask if I wanted it to come back, and said yes, never checked if it will actually come back, that does not bother me.

What does is why it WOULD not combine when they were the only two unites for that squadron on the map at the same location.

Thanks.

ON last thought when I disbaned the fragment into the parent I didn't get the message that it couldnt because fragments were elsewhere...

SO I am positive it was the only fragment...

I'm not sure I'm following you.  I don't believe you can disband a fragment, only a complete unit.  Though I've never tried this.

You can't withdraw a fragment, but you can disband them all you want to (with another similar unit in the hex, etc, etc.)

Thats your problem right there. No air unit - let me say this again NO AIR UNIT breaks down into 2 pieces. Its 3 pieces. Always without exception. You have (or had) another piece somewhere. Either on a carrier, on a ship, or eliminated. But no air unit has just 2 pieces.

And you have to have all THREE complete (no fragments) in the same location equipped with the same type of aircraft in order to recombine.

Edit: VMF 211 and VMF 211/1 (which starts on Wake) are actually 2 different units and can not combine (except in AE).

Depends what he meant by "split them up" - i THOUGHT he had mentioned in a different post that he was playing CHS (i was going on this assumption, but maybe i am wrong about this), and normally Allied air units in CHS won't divide since they are all in squadrons (except for Soviet air units)...

i had thought he meant that the unit got divided up when he moved undamaged planes away from damaged ones thus splitting them up... however, YH is correct: if the unit was split using the "divide unit" process, you need all three fragments to recombine.

BTW - sorry YH - sorry about the files getting sent to you - gmail did something weird and added your name (and a few others) to my threadwar mailing list and thus the strange messages...[:o] [&:]

Yamato Hugger, it was the VMF 211 and the 211/1, didn't realize they were two different units....

Problem solved, and yes you can have only 1 fragment... when I fly aircraft to a new location and the damaged ones stay behind, that makes 1 fragment and 1 parent....

In fact, you can have as many fragments as there are aircrafts in the squadron, if you leave one damaged aircraft in each base and transfer to another base.

Where did I say air units break into "fragments"? I didnt. I said they break down into PIECES (ie AVG/A, AVG/B, AVG/C). Fragments are something else all together, You can NOT make fragment by dividing a unit. By dividing a unit I am talking about hitting THIS button:

It is possible to disband a fragment. The fragment will not have the option of returning though.

YH, if you divide a unit and one of the parts is destroyed, is there any way to combine the unit?

Certainly not if it is an LCU (i have learned from experience [:(])... and i don't think you can if it is an air unit, although you might get the air unit replaced/regenerated and then be able to combine them later.

It depends... sometimes the game will not let you disband a CARRIER air unit... it seems to decide sometimes for reasons that i do not understand that it just will not allow it... usually it isn't a problem, though.

Well, I didnt realize the VMF 211 and VMF 211/1 were 2 different units.  I thought I split them up somehow around the beginning of the game.

YH, what I meant WAS.  I thought I moved the VMF 211 onto a carrier, and the 211/1 was what was left behind, however there was a damaged plane unit of the VMF 211 left on Wake, that all said and done repaired, and merged back with the parent, and then I had the VMF 211 and 211/1 at Pearl in a few turns after this (Thinking 211/1 was a fragment of 211, but they werent), and they wouldn't merge.  NOW I know they are two different units, however I disbanned the 211/1 into 211, and it said it will be back in 60 or 90 days, can't remember which.  I wouldn't have done this disband had I known they were two different units.

I was under the impression I had 211 parent on the carrier, with 2 remaining fragments at Wake and Midway.... all said and done the VMF 211 is on Lexington, and 211/1 is returning according to the game when I disbanned it....

I just couldn't firgure out whenever everything at the base was from the same unit (which it wasn't as I now found out), why they wouldnt merge, but they were two different units, with like names.

Thanks :)

If its destroyed it comes back in a year or so (I think) but if disbanded and you say "no" to the question it asks about it returning, then no, you can never recombine the unit. You can ONLY recombine if you have all 3 pieces there.
