2008 Season Replay

Post by motnahp »

What: 2008 MLB replay using actual rosters, transactions, schedule and stadiums.

Parameters: Multi-player, with all teams under human control. Finances and injuries off. Players rated 1-100 with no in-season changes.

I "drafted" the players via the sandbox mode, then set the rosters exactly as they appeared on opening day. I also added photos for all MLB roster players and many who were called up later in the year.

Whenever a player is injured, I "demote" him and "promote" his replacement. I sim the games day-by-day, letting the game's AI control the lineups. After a team makes a transaction, I Autogen Lineup and/or Rotation for that team. Basically, I'm saying, "OK, AI manager. Here's the same 25 guys the team had in real life. See what you can do with 'em".

At the end of April:

Interesting project. Sounds like a lot of work, though, to make sure the rosters correspond on a day by day basis.

I actually spend more time doing the transactions than I do simming, but it gives an interesting perspective into the day-to-day things that happen in MLB.

Some of those fringe players shouldn't even bother to unpack their suitcases, as they go up and down from AAA until they're out of options. Then it's "designated for assignment". This is a part of baseball that the media doesn't cover very much.

What I normally do is watch every Atlanta game after simming through 7 innings. I also keep an eye on the schedule for good pitching matchups and watch some of those games, as well.

Through the end of May:

Can I join this league? The Pirates need some help. [X(]

Seriously, if this were multiplayer, I'd love to be in on it.

On a tangent, how much do real life teams promote/demote from the majors/minors? In my association I see teams doing it quite frequently, but I am hesitant to do to much shuffling around as I feel you'll never find out what actually works if you keep making constant changes. Plus, I don't want to offend my veterans by putting someone else in their place!

Some teams seem to use their minor leaguers like yo-yo's. Injuries are mostly bad luck, but is sure seems like there's a lot more DL moves since the mid-1980's. Hmmmm.....what might cause that?

At the break:

San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez leads the NL in batting at .355, followed closely by the Mets' Carlos Beltran at .353.

For the AL, it's the Angels' Garret Anderson and Yankees' Hideki Matsui at .338.

A-Rod (29) and Adam Dunn (28) lead in homers.

On the mound, several pitchers have won 13, with the most impressive being Milwaukee's David Bush at 13-1, 2.30.

....and the rest. Note that the Mets are holding on in the NL East and the Phillies are currently out of the playoff picture. Billy Wagner recently went down for the Mets, so we'll see what happens.

This association is either dead in the water or on hiatus, depending on the reply from tech. support.

My created schedule contained a typo on August 17th.

All is not a total loss. I looked in my PSA folder and I did make a copy of the assn before starting play. I was able to import the corrected version of the sked and the season is waiting to start over, if need be.

At least I won't have to repeat all of the importing and text-to-speech if I am indeed required to start over.

Up and running thanks to Wrathchild's idea to try Crash Davis' SKED utility.

The only weird thing that happened was Mike Hampton (5 1/3 IP) and Charlie Morton (5 2/3 IP) pitched shutout ball in back-to-back games for the struggling Braves. Both "scrubbish" hurlers allowed only two hits and picked up rare wins.

I'm now happily on August 22nd[:)][:)][:)]

Regular season complete. The Mets did not collapse in this assn and the Phillies didn't make the postseason.
