Half Again : Allied perspective

Post by cpdeyoung »

19390901 : War with Germany again, just about 20 years after the last. Somehow it seems so much shorter.

This RtV 1.3 PBEM with jjdenver is being waged with "Easy" +50% for both Germany and Great Britain. (Edited for typo).

19391001 : Warsaw is well defended (I forgot to snap a shot), but there are Germans all about and they may take the city this next turn.  If I can hold out till November I will be very pleased with my luck, for it will take luck to resist.

Player's note : This is a good time to take a look at where I see this modified version of the game going.  The Germans are going to be tough with the extra 50% production.  The British also enjoy this bonus, but they will still be a minor thorne in the side of the Axis.  The Soviets are going to have their hands full unless John is one of the new crop of "anywhere but Russia" players.  I rather doubt this as he is going to have a powerful force in 1941, and I doubt he will be satisfied with Turkey! Here are my priorties for the early game :

1. Do not lose Great Britain.
2. Control the seas. Do not let the Royal Navy get trapped in the Med when John takes Gibraltar.
3. Do not lose Malta.
4. Make the Axis fight, hard, for the Suez.
5. Help the Soviets.  Let them bleed the Axis.

19391016 : Only two Polish units left, a corps in Warsaw, and a division outside.  The end is near, but they put up a good fight.  Lots of Germans still about, but they will be heading west soon.  We have already decided that we will accept the inclusion of the Baltic states in the Soviet Union.  The Germans never hesitate to violate the neutrality, and then we scramble.

We have placed the Royal Navy in the North Sea, and the French Navy in the Med.  The Germans have shown no sign of wanting to try our fleets, and the Italians are, of course, neutral.

19391101 : Warsaw, and all Poland have fallen, costing the Germans 11.27 SP, which even at L1 infantry costs is 225.4 PP.  We really do not know what the actual multiplier is, but it will be higher. War is expensive.  Copenhagen, and thus, Denmark have fallen too.  We hate to see this as it implies a threat to Norway, which we want to make our first new ally.  The loss of Norway would bother us a lot as we value their navy.

19391201 : Sitzkreig, the French guard their borders.  The British have staff talks with their French counterparts about the joint defense.  The planners prepare for all the possible scenarios from this still unknown opponent.

The Red Army builds some extra infantry, as Stavka plans expansion beyond the move into Poland. The Baltic states are mentions as areas of interest.

The Americans are engaging in exercises.

19400101 : Happy new year, in a world at war, but a quiet sort of war.  Perhaps the Germans will rethink this war and evacuate Poland.  The Soviets announce they are willing to allow a reconstituted Polish state, if the Germans allow the same.

19400201 : The Germans, looking very strong indeed, have assaulted the neutral Netherlands. The British rush help in, but these strong Germans are impressive.

In this game both the Germans and British get 50% more production.  Of course, since the Germans have so much larger an economy this is much in their favor.  We are trying this because the Axis seems to have a tough row to hoe, but I am very worried about what the Germans will look like in early 1941!  The Soviets are given no extra PP and they will be in big trouble.  Just now the British are realizing 51PP a turn for 2/16/1940 while the Germans must be three times that, or so I estimate.  They will be frightening in France, and by the time of Barbarossa they will be huge.

It's a shame you can't vary the advantage and give 50% in 39, 40% in 40 etc. Germany may be invincible by 1941!

19400301 : The Netherlands falls, of course, and France and Belgium look across their borders at the German troops massing.  France also looks to the southeast where Italy seems to be much taken with this new stronger Germany.  The battle in the Netherlands cost the Germans .5SP from the Dutch, and .75 from the British.  This is still a little war.

(James, I know, it is already feeling uncomfortable, but Russia is big, deep and big.  The previous games have seen the Soviets switching to the offensive in mid-war, and this will not happen in this game, but they may hold out.)

I edit to add this map made available by neutral Belgium.

19400316 : The Germans crush Belgium, leaving Brussels till they can prepare the enhanced attack after its fall. The French see a chance to isolate a Panzer Korps, and take it, despite the retribution sure to follow.

You seem to know your history well my friend. This is indeed what happened, after they bombed Rotterdam in one of the very first terror bombing raids (it was called off, but the bombers never received the message so they carried on with their bombingrun), the Queen fled and a Dutch Brigade was formed in England.
Well done.

19400401 : (Posted 20090401, nice!) : The French prepare for the worst turns, one in which no Allied units can think of anything but where the enemy will be next, the very strong enemy.

(Hello Joshuatree : The Netherlands shipped 28 points to GB, which is a nice division. It looks like it will be needed!)

19400509 : The German General staff has been quoted as saying "Germans can't get much done." which is cause enough for worry! We pull together a line of sorts, and the Italians begin to stir in the south.
