It's time to jump the fence and enter the arena, so here's the AAR for my first PBEM. It's a stock game vs Sierra Juliet. It's his first PBEM too, so we'll probably both make mistakes, and will learn from them.
He picked the Imperial Japan side, I took the Allies.

In this AAR, I'll mostly present the combat reports and general situation, and try to include some more extensively written parts dealing with various units, ships, squadrons, etc. Comments and suggestions are welcome, and don't hesitate to tell me if I'm doing a big-sized mistake.


Here're the settings and house rules. Being both professionals of the law, we have a rather long list of rules, to avoid uncertainty, but we mostly each came with the rules for our own side (that is, I suggested most rules on 4E and PTs).

House Rules
1) No strategic bombing of Chinese cities/bases. No strategic bombing of the formerly Dutch resource/oil centres.
2) Max 6 PTs per TF, and a maximum of twelve PT-boats in two or more TF's in any hex. PTs that are disbanded in port do not count.
3) ASW TF max of 6 ships. No admirals allowed to command
4) No upgrade of single-engine bombers to 2E, and no 2E to 4E (except B-18 Bolos, which were replaced by 4E, or other historical upgrades). That is, no upgrade of A-20 to B-17, B-24 or LB-30.
5) No Japanese LCU naval invasions north of Tavoy until fall of Singapore.
6) No amphibious invasions are permitted in non-base, non-beach hexes.
7) No mini para drops. As many para drops allowed as wished but they should involve at least 500-1000 men at min
8) Troops assigned to China Command, Far East Front Command, Chinese Expeditionary Force Command, Kwangtung Area Command and Home Defence Commands are only to be used in their respective theatre, unless PPs are paid to assign them to another theatre. Chinese troops assigned to SEA and the Flying Tigers (who start in Burma) can only operate in China/Burma/India/Malaya, unless further transferred (paid by PP's) to another theatre.
9) No more than eight LCUs transferred to China from the West Coast by way of the "magic teleporter". No transfer of division-sized LCU, unless it's done through a transfer to India, and then an airlift to China.
10) Airfield stacking limited to 50Xairfield level +15%.
11) Soviet bases shall not be used to transfer air groups from North America to China/Burma/India, unless the Soviets are "in the war".
12) 4Es on naval attack minimum alt. 10 000 ft
13) No 4E bomber missions under 6000', except for ASW/Search missions
14) No Naval Attack by Allied land based bombers (2E bombers) under 1000', until 1/43
15) 4E bombers are not to be used from airbases size 3 or lower, they'll require size 4 or more for any mission. Transfer is an exception (it's not a "mission").
16) B-29's cannot do naval attack missions. At all. At any altitude.
17) No air group part of a carrier air group may be removed from its carrier to make place for other groups, unless it's for transport duties - and transport only. Adding a Marine squadron when there's place left if ok, but replacing air groups is not.
18) No Corsair's allowed on US CV's until 1/44. Except for transport missions
19) Lone-AK TFs used as picket: the abuse of the lone-AK TF should not be allowed.
20) If you're not sure it could have been done IRL, don't do it.
21) Japanese player must garrison not only the Chinese cities but the transport network as well. Assault value per hex at discretion of Japanese player.
22) Japanese player deliberately sends a unit across the border into Russia or Mongolia to allow the allied player the opportunity to deploy Russian units. The rule in relation to Russia not attacking until the points drop below an assault value of 8000 remains.

Tactical Considerations (ie, things that are explicitly not prohibited, albeit sometimes seen as gamey by some players)
- Battleships in transport TFs : changing Escort TF to Transport TF to have them in is OK.
- "Reconnaissance" by sub-transported squads is allowed: aka the "mini-landing", transporting a small fragment of a unit with a submarine, to get a better idea of the defences of a base. Eventually, we could restrict this tactic to the "commando-like" LCU's, like Rangers, Raiders, SNLF's, etc.
- Evacuation of cadres is allowed.
- Stacking many troops on an atoll is OK.
- Using non-restricted command troops any way you see fit (except the China/Manchuria/USSR theatre troops)

First Turn Orders
Here's the interesting part, we took the middle road between pure historicity and total freedom :
- existing TFs may change their orders and their composition, and move
- new TFs may be created, but may not leave port
- air groups may transfer and change their orders



So, what is my general strategy ? It will depend on Sierra Juliet's early moves, but there're some things that are set, priorities established, reinforcements allocated.
If you've read the First Turn Orders, you'll have understood one thing : a Pearl Harbor attack is nigh impossible, as my opponent may expect a lot of new TFs in each of the big ports. So, I doubt he will lose the time of KB by sending it to Hawaii : I expect to see it pop up either in the SRA, to quicken the conquest of the area, or in South Pacific to cover the invasions in this area. As he can't use the first turn's move-multiplier to invade dozens of islands in the first few turns, I'd bet on the SRA.

I plan to fight in as many places as possible, but not sacrifice troops uselessly. Bases that don't give any ressources will be evacuated if possible. Strongpoints will be established. Cadres of some units will be evacuated.

Globally, my priorities are :
- the defence of India and Ceylan, and if possible holding northern Burma
- the defence of Australia and New Zealand, and if possible New Guinea
- the defence of the Hawaii Islands and, if possible, Midway & Johnston

Early on, I don't care about South Pacific : if Sierra Juliet goes there, better for him. And without rule on the overstacking of atolls, I hope he'll put a very big defence there... which I will bypass. There simply are far too many atolls and islands to defend there, and this is true both for him and for me : I won't try to put a hasty defence there, the only way to do it would be to use 4E en masse, and I don't have the airfields to do it. I'll thus evacuate the precious base forces and, in the meantime, holding Australia and New Zealand will be the top priority, with a big convoy planned to arrive there as soon as possible.

In the Dutch East India, Philippine Islands and Malaya, I will regroup as much as possible in Manila and Singapore, and fight a delayed action across the dutch holdings. Since I expect to see KB here, I don't think possible to have a fortress Java or Timor strategy. I'll try to take some cadres to safety, from base forces, engineers, the 4th USMC, and all british forces, by planes and submarines (ships will soon be in dire danger).
US submarines will be used in their intended role, until they run out of torpedoes, and then revert to transports mostly, except the S-class.

The Soviet forces will be activated soon, to allow me to reorganize them as I see fit. Given stock's propensity to see a Japanese victory in China in six months, I expect an attack on Siberia in mid-42.

For the time beeing, too much work (exams until end of may, and if the first part is ok, until end of june) don't allow me to start a PBEM experience, so i will live it through your's, if you admit. i could even give you some advice if you wish, but of course, it would be from a "even-more-newbie" than yourself.

The young ensign was feeling more uneasy with each passing second.  The overcrowded and windowless Control Room fell gradually silent, waiting for... something.  But nothing came from their Captain.  He had given his orders moments before, but once executed there was nothing more to do.
"Sir, I'm sorry" said the young officer.  "The running time of the fishes has elapsed three minutes ago.  I must have made some mistake while computing the fire resolution.  I, ..., I should hav-
- Enough, Mister O'Grady."  Lt-Commander Anderson's face was stern, but devoid of any hostility.  "Sinking a battleship would have been a Christmas gift a bit early, but torpedoes don't hit all the time.  Half of our mission is accomplished : we have had the time to warn Pearl of the incoming of that fleet.  Let's hope the fleet will have the time to set sail before it's too late."  He gave a wide, all-encompassing look across the room, and added "Let's also hope that we dived low enough."
His sentence was barely finished when the first echo of a detonation resonated through the metallic hull.  Ensign O'Grady felt a measure of hope, but his CO uttered but two words : "Depth charges."

USS West Virginia (BB-48), just outside the Bay of Pearl Harbor
 
The sailors were beginning to amass on the decks.  The flying circus above the naval base and Pearl Harbor's Bay had been going on for half an hour now, and no plane had showed the least hostility against them.  The docks were burning, and smoke could be seen in the sky in the direction of Wheeler and Hickam Fields.  The rumor had spread like a wildfire that the officers, with their binoculars, could only see Japanese aircrafts in the skies - all the American fighters had been swept aside, if not shot down.
More than once an enlisted had already said out loud what everyone of them, officers included, thought in his inner self, but a cook was the one speaking it now : "Hey guys, do you imagine if we had been attacked while at anchor and half-sleepy ?
- Yeah, we do, Dorie.  Life would have been different, no doubt about it"  At that moment, the officers started to usher every soul back to his battle station.  The small group of Afro-Americans walked back towards the antiaircraft battery magazine.

The first turn went smoothly, mostly. Steve said to me that he did not think the extent of our HR as thoroughly as he should have, but he does not want to start anew, so we'll go on. Forming a few TFs, even without leaving the port, has been key in saving Battleship Row, but as I thought he would not attack PH, I left most of the fighters on Oahu's airfields, and they got trashed. 57 P-40B have been destroyed, three quarter of them on the ground, among a total of 129 airplanes lost. IJNAF and IJAAF have lost 43 planes, 18 in A2A and 18 to the Flak.

Given the loss of air cover, Admiral Kimmel ordered the Battle Fleet to sally forth... and run full flank to San Francisco.

SS I-3 has been hit by a PBY from PH - probably not enough to sink it, but enough to send it to a repair yard for a few weeks, plus travel time.
Stingray and Dolphin have also been hit by search planes, the former in Manila Bay, the latter near PH. Neither is in danger, but both will need a few months to repair.

Something is weird : he only seems to invade Luzon and Malaya. Guam, Wake, Batan Island, the Gilberts, are not attacked, even though he would have the TFs at his disposal to do it.

The IJN's aviators do much better, even tough it's not their best here : three torpedoes hit, again. Out of 14 Kates. As in the morning phase.

They both know that the officer did not really care. In the last few months, and even moreso in the last 48 hours, he's been disillusionned about his commanding officer. But still...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/08/41

While it's a very satisfying turn overall, there's been a small glitch in the command in the Philippine Islands. Two fighter squadrons, aligning P-26's and P-35's, had been moved the previous day to Laoag and Vigan, to conduct low-altitude strafing attacks on the invasion forces. Yet, the high command (or rather MacArthur, as he's the commanding officer there) forgot to rebase them further back once Japanese troops unloaded en force. The attacks at both bases only encountered the base forces, and their defeat spelled the destruction of both squadrons.
More than the loss of those 30 or so obsolete fighters, it's the loss of the squadron for a full year that is to be blamed here. So be it - at least, that'll be one more reason to replace Mac at the Southwest Pacific command later.

Otherwise, it's a satisfying turn. Only one AK (Si Kiang) as been lost near the PI, this is very good.

USAFFE
Vigan, Laoag and Lingayen are lost, without surprise there. The base forces retreat towards Clark, as well as the rest of the northern Luzon troops.
Naval attacks by B-17's are unsuccessful, hence the preparation of a certain operation from San Marcelino.

SEA/Malaya
Further attacks by the RAF and allies only manages to put a torpedo on each of AP Kasui Maru and AK Atago Maru, which is not enough to threaten them. BB Haruna and Kongo are spotted some 120-180 miles due east of Kuantan.
Dutch submarine KXII is damaged at Khota Bharu, without having torpedoed a single ship.
Force Z, consisting of BB Prince of Wales, BC Repulse, CL Danae, and a couple of Australian and British DDs, has sortied of Singapore and is heading northeast, to try to disrupt the shipping at Khota Bharu.

Central Pacific
Here's an area of very high satisfaction. The Battlefleet has split in small groups, and fanned in a wide arc from the north to the east, with a number of patrol torpedo boats and minesweepers acting as decoy in various directions. The scheme has worked, and apart from a few encounters with submarines, who got a lot of depth charges dropped on them with no apparent effect, the fleet is safe thus far. KB picked a different direction, and is spotted to the southwest.

China
IJA troops start assaulting Hong Kong, with the first shock attack assumed to maul the Japanese forces. Meanwhile, Chinese corps have entered Canton suburbs, and Nanning is another target for the attack in the south. I don't really hope to capture Canton, or hold Nanning and Pakhoi very long if I manage to conquer them, but operations in the south are meant to act as a distraction.
In the north, it appears that the IJA makes a decided push towards Yenen. We'll see what can be done, but I really don't have enough assets in the north to hope keeping my opponent at bay there.

December 9th has been one hell of a turn. I had sent Force Z, consisting of PoW, Repulse, CL Danae and a couple of destroyers on a mission against Khota Bharu. There, they met the cruiser squadron protecting the transports, and the night engagement, in two phase, was vicious : the volley of Long Lances had hit the PoW (3 torpedoes), the Repulse (2) and DD Vampire & Electra (one each), and the CL Danae later. Consecutively (I suppose, as animations still did not work), the gunnery must have been interesting, with Mogami hit eleven times, the last of which at least being a 14in from PoW. DDs Arashi and Hagikaze were left heavily damaged too.

When the sun woke, Force Z was split in separate TFs, and while Repulse was still protected by the Flying Tigers, the other TFs were hit by planes. CL Danae and DD Vampire & Electra were hit by an assortiment of Sallies, Lilies and Nells, and sunk. PoW received one more torpedo from Nells, and three bombs from Sallies.
Repulse, escorted by DD Vendetta and Express, was caught by a powerful SAG comprising BB Kongo & Haruna (earlier hit by a torpedo from a Swordfish), CA Takao & Atago, CL Jintsu and six DDs, but managed to evade without suffering too much.

Mogami sank, Hagikaze is reported sunk too (after having been struck by a torpedo from a Vildebeest), while it costed me CL Danae, two DDs, and most probably Prince of Wales. I expect DD Arashi not to survive the next few days, and if Steve decides to press forward with Kongo and Haruna, I have a lot of LB and TB waiting to catch them closer to Singapore.


On other fronts, two more AKs and a TK fleeing from Naga were sunk. A group of PT-boats ambushed CL Natori and six DDs near the Philippines, and while three PTs are sunk, DD Nagatsuki is torpedoed and gunned, and left on fire and with heavy damage.

B-17C and IL-4C struck port of the undefended Pescadores, damaging a few ships (2 AK, 2 AP, 1 MSW, ) - none except the minesweeper are expected to be sunk, but at least they're out of the picture for now and cropping his repair yards. Near Malaya, one AK, two AP and a PC were damaged by bombs and torpedoes.

Fighting started in Canton and Nanning, where I'm trying to keep the IJA busy.

Back to the game after a three-week hiatus due to professional duties. I won't give many comments on the events, due to lack of time, so will mostly stick to combat reports. Here are the last two CR previously played.

First, December 10th.

PoW sank, along with DDs Express and Tenedos. Hard hit for Force Z, but if it makes Steve invade more cautiously in the future, aka slower, it's worth it.

A lot of auxiliaries and transports fleeing Manilla are hit hard by a SAG consisting mainly of destroyers. Tough luck, the Jap TF ended up in the same hex as a bunch of small TFs.

More bad luck : the day I move the Catalinas to Batan Island is the day Steve decides to invade. Result : loss of the squadron for a year. And most of my "eyes" in the area are thus gone...

However, Yenen defenders held on.

And December 11th.

The attrition war has started in the air, with P-40s flown by the Flying Tigers and the USAFFE pilots start shooting down quite a few Zeroes above Malaya and the Philippines. The faster I can empty his pilot pool, the faster I can turn the table on him.

The last three PTs from the USAFFE are sunk, but put a torpedon in DD Satsuki - probably not enough to sink it. So bad, but I'll have tons of PTs before long anyway.

A lone brigade from Rangoon goes conquer Rahaeng. It might - and will - be but a momentary gain, but I'm again doing PsyOps here : I don't plan to hold there, not against a human player, but only to make him wonder what I'm doing.

To offer a guess...as far as attacking only Luzon/Malaya - could it be possible he is concentrating a larger-than-historical mass of forces there to take the Bataan/Singapore strongholds more rapidly, as the Allies usually rely on these areas to delay the Japanese advance?

To offer a guess...as far as attacking only Luzon/Malaya - could it be possible he is concentrating a larger-than-historical mass of forces there to take the Bataan/Singapore strongholds more rapidly, as the Allies usually rely on these areas to delay the Japanese advance?

He launched his first attack on Borneo today, at Brunei. I don't know what he's doing, really. We had some home rules to prevent abuse from the speed-boost of the first turn, but by now he should have been able to attack a few other places, but he hasn't. So, maybe you're right.

What I know, or rather what I hope, is that my sacrifice of Force Z has showed him I would fight each and everyone of his steps. Maybe he's simply cautious then, and won't invade without a cover force - I still have Houston, Boise and a couple of CL/DD nearby. And subs, lots of subs, even if torpedoes don't always detonate. If it's so, then the sacrifice fulfilled all its objectives, as it'll give me enough time to evacuate those areas where resistance is futile, but still leave in place enough forces to give him reasons to wonder what is my strategy.

But seeing how he moves in Malaya and Luzon, I'm rather inclined to think he simply is methodical. It suits me fine, makes him predictive.[8D]



Otherwise, I'm more preoccupied about Central Pacific : he still has not invaded Wake. He should have by now, yet nothing comes, so I'm planning a reinforcement of the island, ready to go as soon as KB leaves for the SRA. Failing to take Wake early would be, IMHO, a strategic blunder of massive proportions, for I can send a couple of base forces, USMC defence batalions and even a full division there. But maybe he'll come there in the next two weeks, before I can reinforce it enough.

December 12th

I have mixed feelings about this turn. First, the RAF got beaten in Malaya, attacking the shipping at Khota Bharu - CAPped shipping unfortunately. Several fighters, torpedo-bombers and fighter-bombers got shot down, for no hit on any ship. I've moved the AVG to Kuantan to launch a sweep tomorrow - if I can't sink his ships, I'll shoot his planes.
Still in Malaya, he captured Alor Star... which I had just evacuated. From playing the AI, I've learned that you can't defend with two or three brigades, the sole result being that those brigades would be heavily disrupted/disabled, and I want to keep them for a stand at Johore Bharu. So, as soon as he advanded his heavy infantry division, I stepped back.

In China, he bombed Hong Kong's airfield, torching five SB-2c - I moved the rest back to another AF, I forgot to move them after the attack on Pescadores' harbour.[:o]

In the Philippines, the usual sweep does not find any enemy at Lingayen, so I changed the target. The B-17C are scheduled to do a port strike on Hainan isle (western base), since I spotted over 60 ships in the port, and no planes on the AF.

Brunei fell to a strong attack, making it the first base to fall in the NEI. A stronger bomber strike on the shipping has been ordered.

SS Sargo boldly approached from Tainan base, and put torpedoes in the AK Kashii Maru in a surface action. The torpedoes detonated and the cargo sank later in the day.
Close by, SS Porpoise was not so lucky, and his torpedoes failed to detonate when they hit the AV Sanuki Maru in Takao's entrance. Still, I'm happy with one sinking a day this early in the sub war.

Off the West Coast, CV Yorktown and a few hunter-killer groups track the few IJN submarines that lie in ambush near San Francisco. The first convoy will have a nice CV as escort...

December 13th went on. The day of the Fallen Hawk !

Overal, not a very bad day, but not a good day by far.

In Malaya, I ordered a sweep by the AVG, from Kuantan to Khota Bharu - 6 'hawks down for one Oscar !
In Luzon, the Warhawks were doing a sweep of Laoag too : 8 'hawks down for one Zero !
The USAFFE's Flying Fortresses were ordered to do a port strike at Taan (on Hainan), where some 70+ ships were reported : lot of bombers damaged, not a single hit, be it on port or ship !

Hopefully, there were two good news.
First, DD Nagatsuki, torpedoed by the PT boats from the Philippines a few days ago, sank this night. Quoting my esteemed opponent : "Nasty PTs boats."
Second, a shock attack at Yenen went awfully bad for the IJA, and resulted in heavy losses for the invader, while the valiant defenders are continually reinforced by more units.

KB is still spotted, going towards Wake. I suppose that the invasion was merely delayed, to wait for KB's cover, just in case I had sent Lady Lex and the Big E disrupt the invasion (like I, and probably everybody else, do against the AI). But no, I had sent the two carriers towards Makin, but no enemy fleet was spotted, so no air strike. They're moving back east, to avoid lingering too long in one place.

There still are several subs near San Francisco, but I find that risky : every sub damaged would have a long way home, and would certainly sink.

December 14th.

Well, well, well. Now, KB is heading east, between Midway and Johnston. And still no invasion at Wake. Either it's a bad timing, or the delay is voluntary, but then I don't see the point. If Steve wished to cover Wake's landing with KB, he could have scheduled it for the 9th or 10th - IMHO he's wasted a week's worth of KB's time. And he does not even make much use of his Betties and Nells in the SRA.

In the Philippines, the IJA does not appear to move forward from northern Luzon, probably consolidating their positions first. An invasion force does go ashore at Naga, with some heavy preliminary bombardment by a group of battlewagons.

A new sweep by Manilla's Hawks revealed their true colors : Doves (thanks to Steve for the pun). Again, five P-40E go down, for only one A6M on the whole day - and the only Zero damaged during the day was against some B-17C, so the credit goes to the bomber crews, not the fighters.[8|]
Near Malaya, 21 RAF bombers prey upon an uncapped transport TF - and achieve no hits ! But two dutch bombers drop a bomb on a gunboat at Brunei.

The submarine war has been very intense today. First, a dutch sub catches CA Atago, but the torpedoes miss. Then, Sailfish hits DD Minegumo, but the torpedoes fail to detonate, unsurprisingly. But dutch submarine KXI saves the day by sinking an AP at Songkhia. This early in the war, with so few submarines having working torpedoes, I'm happy to get a successful attack every day.[8D]
On the opposite side, a DMS is torpedoed and in danger of sinking, while it was returning to Pearl Harbour. But several IJN submarines were lightly damaged during the ASW operations today.

Guess what - I'll ask Churchill to hasten the liberation of Amsterdam, I need dutch instructors and councilors for the RAF, RN, USN, and USAAF.

IJN submarine I-4 is mauled by the ASW groups that operate near Pearl Harbour.

Steve appears to be eager to close the Philippine airfields, with an attack on Manila that doesn't achieve much, and comes at the price of many damaged Betties.

The RAF tries once again to attack the shipping at Khota Bharu, with heavy losses and no actual bombing. The USAFFE B-17C's miss the CVL Ryujo. However, dutch bombers, again, manage to drop several "gifts" near Brunei, with an AK and CL Kashii lightly damaged.

The IJA takes Naga, and ships present themselves at Legaspi the next day. A Chinese attack at Nanning proves bloody - tactics will change there...
