Now if only I can get Nemo to do the same for EA...

Go to a different map for EA?

Mike,

Can you give me a quick and dirty brief-in on BigB and your version of it? Particularly how it effects the economy and aerial war as the naval and ground wars are usually pretty much a wash in most mods.

And now for the usual question. It is Jan 42... so it is time to be thinking of your global position on 1st July 1943. Where do you want the front-line trace to be in 18 months and what is your planned phasing of operations to get that front-line trace?

Fionn,

I took Big B's mod and put it into RHS 6 maps. I didn't like the results of John vs Dan when the Allies can get their ships cornered around Australia and sunk. I like your mod with the shipping channel around the edge, but wanted to decrease the strategic importance of Perth, so I got Cid to modify the pwhex file to have a shipping channel from Capetown to SW Australia. You should be able to get stuff into and out of Australia even if NZ and Exmouth are in Japanese hands like in John's 2x2 game. It may take extra time, but it should get there.

Everything lined up from you mod's map to the latest of RHS 6 except Alor Star, Darwin, and Exmouth were off by one hex. The screen shot shows the new shipping channel with Perth closed off. I like this better than what you have and the pwhex file can be changed in mid-game. This is the change I would like to see in your mod.

I see the 2 sunk US CVs but did they have any CA/CL with them?  Did you get a crack at them with the KB?

And now for the usual question. It is Jan 42... so it is time to be thinking of your global position on 1st July 1943. Where do you want the front-line trace to be in 18 months and what is your planned phasing of operations to get that front-line trace?

I've started to slowly change my focus over to economic factors vs just real estate. From what I have learned, the Japanese economy is based on Oil. The more you have and can protect, the more Heavy Industry you can run efficiently. Resources do not seem to be a deciding factor.

China - cut off the supply from Burma and take northern China as there are only trails from Chungking to Sian.

Russia - I've seen what happened with Damian's adventure there with your mod. [:-] No way, No how!?!

Australia - I briefly thought about it from a slightly different manner than conventional (north to south). Land on the two bases that surround Sydney, but I haven't worked through the diversion to get troops away from this urban base. Sydney and Melbourne need to be isolated very early in the battle. You cannot allow troops to slowly retreat into both those bases. If you do, then a repeat of John vs Dan happens again.

India - Its either all or nothing. With Stuart's loss of Enterprise and Lexington, I have less to fear from the Americans for most of 42.

Hawaii - This game is mainly about keeping the Americans away from the Japanese economic assets for as long as possible.

I will have spent my 100 PP per day for small items like Eng Rgt, Construction, and Tank sometime in mid-Jan. Next will be the 2 brigades and 2 divisions in Manchuria and one brigade and three division in Japan. Some are prepping for the South Pacific, but my main thrust is still being decided - Australia, India, or Hawaii area. Any ideas??

So, if Perth is captured then the Allies would have the option of coming out way south of Oz and invading anywhere from Brisbane to Perth.

That's some very good thinking and realistic also from what I can see. What are the downsides if any?

Seeing it on-screen it makes sense and would definitely be a change I'd consider...

I would suggest that if you can scrape together 2 divisions that a "cheapo" landing at Hawaii in early 42 ( Feb would be fine ) phased so your CVs are available for India could be very useful.

It would give the USAAF somewhere to get attritted to nothingness in defensive warfare around Hawaii - which would have the subjunctive benefit of indirectly blunting the USAAFs ability to project force along the Aleutians axis and the requirement in terms of base forces, engineers etc is tiny. You just need to take 2 bases near Hawaii and then that's it as far as Hawaii goes. You'll gather more POWs than you have to commit so it is also efficient in terms of ground forces.

India: Good. If you go go with EVERYTHING though. There's no point going for a limited offensive in India. Take everything or take nothing.

Oz: I have ideas but telling you them would tip ol' Hartwig off and he's a good damned intelligence officer. I'm sure he is occasionally checking my posts to make sure he has read everything I've written - just as I'm doing for his ( private AARs excepted ). I'll drop you a note privately tomorrow about the Oz suggestions. Again they are supremely cheap relative to the return -- again my obsession with efficiency.

Nemo,
I was thinking that we could move your mod across to this map, just for the Ohh, ahh factor - but maybe it is too much work but something I'd like to see after AE is released. Otherwise using this PwHex file might be an advantage with the added shipping channels.

The BB economy is not all that hard to manage compared to your mod as there are really only 2/3 engines that need building. And the plane list upgrades are fairly easy to achieve... The A2A model is similar to (and was based on)Nikmod from what I've read...
[edit] HI is also able to be accumulated from the beginning and the Arm and Veh requirements are fairly low

Turn almost completed and back to you in 10 mins...

Well, I have no problems with a PWHEX and map (jpg) upgrade which keeps the sanctity of the underlying economic etc data.

If push comes to shove I can move a few towns pretty easily....

You know me and technology... so rather than explaining my utter ineptitude I'll just ask for a link to the map files so I can D/l and examine them.

Map changes

Post by ny59giants »

I've added the three bases on the south edge shipping channel similar to your mod. The distance from Capetown to the exit of this new channel is 46 hexes. I don't see any downside as it removes the increased strategic importance of Perth to the defense of Australia. It is far enough away that Exmouth cannot have Betty/Nell reach shipping from Capetown like it does now in your mod as they run for Perth.

Another change with RHS 6 is the layout around Aden. This can be changed within game by modifying the pwhex file and both sides installing a different map panel. It give you a little more maneuver room for warships than Andrew's Aden layout.

Go to Spooky's for my mod. It's easy to install if you have a WITP install done with Andrew's extended maps in use.

Thanks for the info Micheal,
I'm going to look at it today ...

Umm any reason you don;t want B-1 type SS's ? They have air-search capability don't they ?

Otherwise, everything economically looks great [;)] ... well I'd still like to see some higher numbers of LB/fighters produced eventually

Damian,

I will be done with initial aircraft repair and expansion by the 20th (or so) in this game as my other one is at that point. The next question is what to do next...r&d aircraft and/or any more conversions. You will get your next file early next week.

ASW/Subs: I-162 had a good day!! [8D] She put 2 torpedoes into 2 APs just south of Palembang and finds out her deck guns work as well. SS Thresher gets lost and is found at Palau.

SRA (eastern): 6 B-17D's visit Ambonia from Darwin and none are shot down. Damage them, we can do with Oscars, but no kills.[8|] I call this a case of foreshadowing and I don't like it!!

Malaya: 16 Blenheim from Singapore fly 120 miles north and inflect no casualties to the 18th Division.

Borneo: Sandakan falls to a NLF.

Damaged bases: Kendari is now at 72 port and 48/4 AF. Brunei is 63 port and 2/9 AF.

ASW/Subs: SS Tautog is at Ominato and my 6 ship ASW TF comes up empty. SS Seal takes a shot at the bombardment TF heading for Tarakan in the Sula Sea, but the captain was not patient enough and misses. SS Porpoise gets one direct hit in the channel between Formosa and south China. There are now 4 subs around Formosa and each has an ASW TF assigned to "try" to kill the damn things. [:@]

China: Curtis H81-3A x 11 from Hengchow fly a sweep over Foochow. The daitai of Claudes were stood down as prior experience shows they are just cannon folder against this unit. The 15th Division pushed a guerrilla unit back towards Hengchow and will move on that base next as the 34th Division is now less than 20 miles from this base. Once a LCU arrives, then my Zeros (3 x daitai on Formosa) will be turned loose (I want a LCU there to recover pilots).

Burma: Bangkok is hit by Blenheim IV x 12 escorted by Curtis H81-3A x 24 from Rangoon getting only one runway hit. I have the final third of a Sendai of Nates converting over to Oscars at Bangkok.

Malaya: Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 44 fly a sweep over Singapore and find the skies empty. [:)] On the ground, the combat power of 5th Division, 18th Division, 56th Division, Imperial Guards Division, 4th Mixed Rgt, 4th Mixed Brigade, 5th Engineer, 3 x Tank, and 3 x Field Artillery (Japanese max assault: 2031 - adjusted assault: 1890 vs Allied max defense: 110 - adjusted defense: 9) push these troops back to Johore Bahru. All are given orders to follow except the 4th Mixed Brigade which will join the 21st & 23rd Mixed Brigades at Malacca to destroy the 4 x brigades trapped there.

Borneo: Brewster 339D x 8 escort Martin 166 x 9 from Singkawang hit Kuching where A6M2 Zero x 3 are on CAP. Losses were A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged and G3M Nell: 2 destroyed vs. Brewster 339D: 1 destroyed and Martin 166: 1 damaged while the AF gets Airbase supply hits 1 and Runway hits 6. Meanwhile, Singkawang is hit by A6M2 Zero x 20 escorting G3M Nell x 27 and get Runway hits 2. Next turn, all the Zeros are assigned 70% CAP while the Nells will be set for Naval Attack only. At sea, B-17D Fortress x 13 from Cagayan attack my Tarakan invasion force and thankfully miss all my ships.

Note: Zero dispositions at this time and place are: 3 x daitai on Formosa; 1 x daitai on Malaya; 1 x daitai at Kuching; 1 x daitai at Kendari; and 1 x daitai at Truk (just upgraded and will move to Rabaul). I have 3 x daitai of Claudes at Shanghai and another at Ambonia awaiting planes plus the CVLs. I am producing just over 6 planes per day as factories continue to repair and should be doing well in another few weeks. Then, the Flying Tigers will be dealt with in overwhelming numbers. For now, they can fly sweeps over bases without CAP. I plan to meet them on my terms and not his.
