It seems to be a L1 or 2 harbour, Ice bound 8 mths of the year and the track leading inland sounds like an Arctic Kokoda track. Of course where Gold is found such hassles dont matter.

It appears in WPO 1922 scenarios, I dont think it even existed!![:D]

The Soviet Naval Base in this area was not named after Magadan but after Nagajewo (Nagayevo) [Bay] (which makes it somewhat difficult to look after if one searches for information about Magadan) and had 4x 152mm and 11x 130mm Guns for its defense. Don't know how useful the port was, but it seems that at least the Soviet Pacific Fleet considered the location not completely unimportant.
Well hello there K, nice to see ya getting out and about again. Like your comments on Magadan. Mostly we were just goofing on the Mythic River, but Magadan is pretty cool in an offhand sort of way.

There’s some installation ruins by the front range lighthouse in Magadan, and by the lighthouse on Cape Chirikova. Maybe that was them. Present day, the trawler shipyards, located in the SE corner of Nagayeva Bay, have 2 concrete piers; one about 150’, the other about 200’. No cranes, no slip-rails, no evidence of pre-existing structures. Could, maybe, dock a small DD or 2, but more likely is a couple of small minecraft.

Hydrographically, Magadan reminds me of Port Mahon, except Port Mahon opens East and closes West. Magadan (Nagayeva Bay) is wider, opens West and closes East, making a funnel for the prevailing Westerlies. A very bad port in a storm. Clearly this is so because there is a sand shelf along the flat Eastern face of Nagayeva Bay fronting Magadan city. Bottom is broken/rocky – bad holding ground.

No … just can’t see anything practically Naval at Magadan, except they be anchored in soundings. Maybe because of the fishing trawler shipyard, Naval vessels might call in order to have some welding done, or let the poor starpoms stretch their legs a bit. Maybe the CD guns were to protect the ore-barge terminal from a dastardly Japanese raid? Dunno.

It didn’t. It was founded (established? built?) in 1931 (maybe 1932) by Gulag labor. Nothing there beforehand.

I think that Magadan/Nagajewo Bay was part of a chain of protected anchorages (others were De-Castrinsk and Vladimir Olga in Primorsky, it seems) established by the Soviet Pacific Fleet to offer shelter for their ships when moving between Vladivostok and Petropavlovsk. And probably to serve as refueling bases as well, considering that most Soviet naval ships were pretty shortranged.

That sounds like just the ticket, K. Perhaps it would be wise to populate some of the bases with a handful of yard oilers?

Hope to gosh we do, Jeff. The AE people (mostly Andrew Brown) spend a lot of time on port (base) capabilities. Obviously, our time and attention was concentrated on those places that would raise the biggest whines from the smallest winkies.

But ... Andrew Brown, Kereguelen, and myself, are very interested in defining the Soviet capability. I'm just a tyro, these guys are the Pros From Dover. To the extent I can accommodate their thoughts, I will do so.

Yard Oilers? YOs? Sudden flurry of interest from Don's Babies Daddy.

But I was going to invade magada so i could access all of those resources without having a fight near the Trans Siberian.....[:'(]

Keep going on AE guys, it must be sooooooo close.

Then take 6 mths leave and avoid us nit pickers picking nits.
