Dec 17, 1941 The Merchant Fleet Massacre Continues
Enemy Carrier aircraft stuck again today at Amboina, seriously damaging the harbor, and airfield. With this being the 3rd day of strikes it can be reasoned that the Japanese are prepping for an invasion. Again today an enemy submarine attacked the minesweeping force working off the harbor at Balikpapan, torpedoing another sweeper, which is not expected to remain afloat.
The enemy attacked several transports and cargo ships in the waters around the Philippines today with IJAAF dive bombers, and although several hits were obtained damaging some of these ships, none of the vessels were sunk. Also 2 damaged merchant ships foundered because of damage received in the previous few days in the Philippines area.
Clarke Field was subjected to a heavy air attack by IJNAF bombers and fighter-bombers from Formosa today, serious damage was done to the airbase buildings, and some supply dumps were destroyed. Later in the day a fighter-bomber raid by Zero’s from Formosa was launched at the airfield on the Bataan peninsula, but damage was only light, and 4 of the attackers were bought down by AA.
There was no enemy ground movement today in Luzon, and it can be guessed that the Japanese are reorganizing there troops for another push on Clark Field, after their failed ‘reconnaissance raid’ yesterday. Sadly in the south today at Iloilo the garrison was forced to surrender by the enemy, after it had been pushed out of the port and perused for several days.
Air attacks and enemy ground assault continued again today against Hong Kong, but no headway was made against the fortifications, and the attackers suffered heavy casualties. The enemy ground forces in the Nanchang area managed to free their front today, by forcing back the 2 Chinese Corps in the area. There was also a minor skirmish east of Nanchang, where the enemy is trying to clear the road to Shanghai.
There were air attacks by IJAAF medium bombers east of Nanking today on Chinese Guerilla forces, and 2 attacks by IJAAF on the Honan airfields, one by dive bombers, and the other by light bombers. Also in the south at Nanning the IJAAF attacked the air base with light bombers from Haiphong. It can be a safe bet that the enemy has plans to move on these last two Cities after the amount of attention that both have been receiving.
The day started in Malaya with an enemy fighter sweep over Singapore, with the enemy downing 2 P-40s for the loss of 1 Zero. Then in the afternoon IJNAF bombers escorted by Zeros raided the port sinking 1 cargo ship unloading at the dock. In the second raid the enemy also shot down 3 P-40s for no loss to themselves. There was no ground action in Malaya today, and the Allies are still withdrawing to better positions in the south.
Patrolling Minesweepers discovered a freshly laid minefield off the busy port of Batavia today, it is suspected that an enemy mine laying submarine laid the mines during the night. Again an even day, but it must be added that the Allied merchant fleet losses are becoming catastrophic, and cannot continue.
EDIT: Late news from Rangoon; a fighter sweep was launched on this City’s airfields today by IJAAF Oscars based on Bangkok. The enemy fighters were intercepted by P-40s of the AVG, and in the ensuing dogfight 7 enemy were shot down for the loss of 1 P-40. The RAF launched a retaliatory raid on the enemy airfields at Bangkok with Blenheim medium bombers in the afternoon. The results of this raid are unknown, because of cloud-cover over the Bangkok area, but it is recorded that none of the RAF attackers were lost.

"Majesty, some good news from the Chinese Theatre. Firstly, the Chinese rabble attempting to surround Nanchang has been broken and were last seen fleeing the field in a disorganized retreat. And while Hong Kong continues to resist, we have received radio intercepts indicating that the garrison there is becoming desperate and begging for relief and supplies."
"Chujo Hommo reports that all enemy resistance in the Iloilo area with the surrender of the American forces in the area. Chujo Homma also assured the General Staff that a second assault on Clark Field would not fail. As his Majesty has requested, additional forces have been cleared for action in the Philippines by the General Staff."
"To the east, 4th Fleet area remains quiet, and phase 2 preparations continue. In the 4th Fleet area we are actually ahead of schedule due to the collapse of enemy resistance in that area. In the South Eastern Fleet area of operations, preparations continue for our phase 2 targets."

Dec 18, 1941 Enemy Merchant Raiders Intercepted
A lone freighter was attacked and sunk about 400miles west of San Francisco today. While on the West Coast itself today air-patrols have started to report submarine sightings near the major ports, it would be assumed that these are the boats that have moved from the Pearl Harbor area. It would therefore appear that the enemy is prepared to wage a long-range submarine campaign on the West Coast; this will force us to run a convoy system on the coast, and will therefore slowdown the buildup.
Also overnight in the Pacific about 200 miles west of Gardner Island, a group of heavy cruisers on patrol intercepted 2 enemy merchant cruisers heading north. In the resulting engagement one of the enemy vessels was badly damaged, and put on fire, but the other managed to escape into the darkness. It would be safe to assume that these cruisers are the 2 raiders that sunk a freighter off Bora Bora on the first day of the war.
A picket submarine off the enemy base of Truk put a torpedo into an AP, and then managed to evade the escorts. It is hoped that this AP was part of an invasion force meant for Rabaul, and it’s torpedoing has possibly caused the postponement of this operation. This same submarine has also noted a large increase in the amount of warships in the area, and it could be suspected that KB is even in the area.
There was 3 separate submarine attacks reported off Darwin today, and one of these attacks resulted in the damaging of a large merchantman. Meanwhile to the north at Amboina the enemy CVL force has struck for the fourth day strait at the port, and airfields. It has also been reported that there is an increase in shipping in the Sorong, and it must be assumed that this is the invasion force moving in.
A merchantman was torpedoed at the southern exit to the Makassar Strait again today, but will make port safely. While an I- boat attacked MSWs off Balikpapan again, but this time the sweepers managed to drive the submarine off without one of their number being damaged. Also these MSWs managed to clear the port entrance of mines at Balikpapan today.
It was found today that the enemy had occupied Davao, which had been evacuated a number of days ago to consolidate all troops on Mindanao north at Cagayan. While also today the Japanese landed at Dumaguete on Cebu Island, which has now cut the 2 Allied units on the Island off from one another. The enemy IJNAF attacked the Clark Field area again today with a large raid from Formosa.
Hong Kong was again pounded from the air, and with artillery, which can only be in preparation for a renewed ground attack. Also The IJAAF launched several raids on airfields and troop concentrations in most parts of China today. The enemy also carried out some small road clearing operations in the south of the country.
Singapore was subjected to a large IJNAF raid today from the enemy’s new airfields at Kota Bharu today, and while significant damage was done, it was gratifying to see that the enemy lost 7 Nells to AA. The withdrawal continues at an orderly pace, and because of the delaying actions the enemy has not been able to interfere on the ground. Today was another day of defeats, but most of the Allied forces still remain intact.

Friday Dec 19, 1941 Japanese Submarines Hunting On West Coast
Enemy Submarines are now active on the Western Seaboard of the US, and Canada, sightings and contacts have been confirmed from Anchorage to Los Angeles. There have been two serious attacks by these Japanese I-boats today; one was south of Anchorage were a large freighter was torpedoed and badly damaged, and the other incident was off Vancouver Island (seaward side) were a patrolling corvette of the RCN was torpedoed and sunk.
Patrolling Cruisers off Gardner Island again made contact with an enemy AMC during the night, and it is believed that this enemy vessel was sunk. A number of hits were scored on the Japanese vessel, it was last seen on fire from end to end, and was very low in the water. Air searches in the morning by the Cruiser’s floatplanes found debris and an oil slick in the water, but sadly no sign of the other AMC were found.
In the morning a minefield was located in the channel approaches to Darwin harbor by patrolling MSWs, and accordingly the sweepers have worked all day to clear the channel. There have also been more submarine reports in the Darwin area, but as yet patrolling DDs have not yet made any contacts. It is also suspected that an enemy Submarine is hunting off the north western coast of Australia, after the unexplained loss of Tanker in that area.
The enemy has landed on eastern Ceram today at Boela, which is confusing as one would have thought that Amboina would have been the logical target. Amboina was also subjected to another carrier raid today, which again damaged the airfield and port. One could suspect that the enemy is trying to force the evacuation of Amboina with the tactics that he is using.
IJAAF dive bombers from Jolo Island attacked the airfield at Cagayan today damaging the buildings and runway. There was no air activity over Luzon today; it is suspect that the Japanese are resting their flight crews. Also no enemy ground movement in the north today, it is thought that he is reorganizing after his reverse at Clark Field. It is now known that a full enemy Brigade group with supporting units was involved in his assault on Clark Field.
Hong Kong received its routine pounding from air and land again today, but with its fortifications and supply stocks still intact, we are confident it can holdout. Numerous air raids in China again today, mainly against troop concentrations. Also a ground skirmish west of Shanghai, as the Japanese attempt to clear the road and rail line to Nanchang.
Singapore was subjected to IJNAF raids today on the airfield around the city, there was also an early fighter sweep, which was not contested by the RAF. No ground action again in Malaya, as the enemy advance seems to be slow and cautious, allowing the Allied withdrawal to proceed unhindered. Saturday Dec 20, 1941 Concerning Japanese Landing at Kuching
The large Freighter damaged yesterday by a submarine-torpedo south of Anchorage was sunk today, in the same area by another torpedo attack, and more than likely the same Submarine. Meanwhile to the south in the approaches to Seattle harbor an enemy Submarine was depth charge in secession by two ASW patrols, and is believed to have been sunk.
There was a large enemy Carrier raid on Ralaul today, and because of the number of aircraft involved in this raid, it is certain that the full Carrier Striking Fleet (6x Carriers) is present. The airfield was completely neutralized by this attack, and RAAF aircraft attempting to strike the enemy ships were driven-off with heavy loss. It is a reasonable guess that the Carrier Fleet is covering the invasion of Rabaul, and will possibly launch strikes at other targets in the area.
Minesweepers were still working to clear the channel into Darwin of mines today. While further north a Minesweeper working off the Port of Balikpapan was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy Submarine. The enemy has taken Boela in eastern Ceram today, and is now poised to move on Amboina one would suspect. An RAAF strike today on shipping at the Boela beachhead failed to score any hits. There was no air raid on Amboina today, so it can be safely assumed that the enemy light Carrier Group has moved off.
Another large IJNAF raid on the Clark Field area today did considerable damage to the runways, and also caused a number of casualties amongst ground personnel. Intelligence is interacting that the enemy is again moving on Clark Field in force, from the north and south. The morale of the Allied troops in the Clark Field area is still very high, and they are confident that they can hold off the enemy.
The enemy renewed the ground assault on Hong Kong today, and did manage to push the garrison out of some of its positions. There was also a large enemy attack at Nanchang, where the Japanese are attempting to drive off Chinese units that are concentrating on the City. This attack was driven back with very heavy casualties to the Japanese, and their units can now be considered to be pinned to the City. There were also several enemy air raids today in China, mainly on troop concentrations.
The enemy started to land at Kuching in northern Borneo today; there was not much of a response from the Allied forces in the area, as the landings came as a complete surprise. But rest assured that there will be a full response tomorrow, as the enemy can dominate the northern Java Sea from kuching. Some RAAF Hudson’s did manage to raid the Kuching landings today, but didn’t score any hits. Also an enemy submarine sunk a small steamer west of Kuching today.
All was quiet it Malaya, apart from a mixed IJAAF/IJNAF medium Bomber raid on Medan today, causing serious damage to the air base there. Also another Japanese air raid on Moulmein by IJAAF light Bombers was intercepted by AVG P-40s, who managed to shot down several more enemy aircraft. So another bad day for the Allies, especially with the landings at Kuching, this has the potential to completely isolate Singapore.

"In the Philippines, Chujo Homma has entered the area around Clark field in force, commiting two divisions and a reinforced indepenant brigade to the operation. Aircraft are also operating out of Manila and Naga now that the airfields have been 90% repaired."

The enemy Submarine situation in this area has stabilized somewhat in the last 48hours. It is reported that 2 Japanese Submarines have been sunk, or badly damaged on the western seaboard in the last 2 days. It is also reported that convoy escorts have driven-off another I-boat, and Air patrols have forced an enemy boats to stay submerged during the day.
CENTRAL PACIFIC
There has only been sightings of 2 Enemy Submarines in the area around Pearl Harbor, and because of an over-flight by a Japanese Floatplane, it is assumed these Submarines are on picket duty. Also the RAAF launched 2 Hudson anti-shipping raids on the Japanese shipping in the Amboina area, but no hit have been recorded.
SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
The Japanese Captured Butuan today, after an air raid by IJAAF Dive Bombers. They then moved on to start landing an Infantry Brigade at Cagayan, after a bombardment of the defenses by a group of Enemy Destroyers. It has been reported that the Coastal Guns at Cagayan have caused heavy casualties amongst the enemy assault troops. The Japanese also landed at Dumaguete yesterday, and their assault failed to take the port today .

Clarke Field was pounded again today by the IJNAF from Formosa, this raid targeted the runways and supply dumps, doing heavy damage to both. The IJAAF also attacked troop position at Clark Field, with 2 raids launched from Manila, the casualties from these raids were light. The Enemy also launched a heavy ground assault (2 Divisions+) on this area today, and managed to take 1 fortified position, but suffered over 2000 casualties to do it.

One of our submarines has reported contact with an SB2U Vindicator in open waters. As his Majesty is aware, the Vindicator is a short range, carrier capable dive bomber. It's presence thousands of miles from any land mass can only mean that an enemy carrier is transiting the area. Additional submarines were dispatched to attempt to intercept this carrier, but have been unable to make contact in the last 24 hours and contact has since been lost."

WESTCOAST USA
An Enemy Submarine torpedoed and badly damaged a large Tanker off Los Angeles on the 23rd, with the Tanker been safely bought into that Port on the 24th. On the 24th an ASW Force operating off Los Angeles located and sank an Enemy I-boat identified as I-16. Air Patrols off San Francisco are reporting today that 2 Enemy Submarines are now operating off that Port. A Convoy System is now in operation on the Western Seaboard, the area is also now heavily patrolled by Aircraft.
CENTRAL PACIFIC
There have been sightings of Enemy Submarines northwest of the Hawaiian Islands in the last 2 days, but because there have been no attacks on Shipping it is suspected that these Boats are on Picket Duty. Also in the last 3 days 6 more vessels that have successfully escaped from the Philippines have arrived at Pearl Harbor. A USN Minesweeper investigating a Submarine sighting off Pago Pago was torpedoed and sunk today.

There have now been no Carrier Aircraft attacks on Rabaul for the past 48 hours, and it is assumed that the Enemy Carrier Force has moved off to replenish. Although there is still regular Floatplane reconnaissance, leading to the assumption that a Heavy Enemy Naval Force is still in the area. A Japanese Landing Regiment has been disembarking from its Transports for the last 2 days. This Regiment assaulted the Town today, and managed after some heavy fighting to take 1 of the 3 main defensive positions.

In a major setback for the Dutch the Base of Amboina was overrun by the Japanese yesterday, the attack was so overwhelming and sudden that the Enemy captured several Dutch Aircraft still on the Airfield. But the full significance of the loss of this Airfield is that it now gives the Japanese Air cover over the southern sea exits from the Dutch East Indies. The possession of this Airfield also gives the Enemy a base from which they launch there Bombers against Darwin.

The Enemy again pounded the Allied troop position around Clarke Field with heavy IJAAF and IJNAF raids launched from both the Manila area, and Formosa. The Japanese Army also heavily shelled the Allied positions around Clarke Field with an Artillery Bombardment today, but did not renew their ground attack from yesterday which made no progress against the 2 Fortified positions the Allies are still holding. The Japanese occupied Taytay to west of Luzon yesterday.

Japanese Ground Forces managed to take the last fortified position protecting Hong Kong today, and the Commonwealth Defenders have withdrawn into the City as a last line of defense. There was also a heavy Enemy Air raid on Hong Kong in support of the ground attack. The Japanese also launched numerous Air Raids in most parts of China, mainly against Chinese troop concentrations. The enemy continues to clear communication links between Shanghai to Nanchang, and now has the road clear to about 60 miles east of Nanchang. At Nanchang itself, the now considerable forces from both sides exchanged artillery fire.

The Dutch Base of Kuching fell to a Japanese Infantry Brigade yesterday, after an early morning bombardment by an Enemy Naval force which included a Battleship. This Brigade only started landing yesterday, and has been attacked by numerous air raids by Dutch and RAAF aircraft, but only a torpedo hit on a Destroyer, and a bomb hit on a Corvette have been achieved. There was a Skirmish the night before between USN PT-Boats, and a Japanese Destroyer Division, in which the Enemy suffered no loss for the sinking of 2 PT-Boats. The loss of this Base now means the Japanese can dominate the Northern Java Sea.

The Japanese Started to land at Kuantan in the early hours of yesterday morning, and took the town today against no opposition, as the town was evacuated a number of days ago. This operation is being supported by at least 4 Enemy Battleships, and also has heavy IJNAF fighter cover. The RAF and RAAF have been launching raids against Enemy Shipping supporting this landing, but have only managed to hit 2 transports this far. The Japanese launched another IJNAF raid on the Airfields at Singapore destroying some aircraft on the ground. Also IJAAF air raids are launched on both Medan, and Moulmein today, mainly against their Runways.

An IJNAF raid on Palembang today did some damage to the docks, while an attack by IJNAF Torpedo Bombers near Toboali seriously damaged a Dutch Tanker. Both these raids were launched from Kota Bharu in Malaya, and with the strafing attack on troop carrying Barges in the Singapore area yesterday by IJNAF fighters, now means that Singapore is effectively isolated.

WESTCOAST USA
The only action on the Coast for the day was the depth charge attack on an Enemy Submarine off San Francisco, by an ASW Task Force sent to investigate an air patrol sighting. This Task Force was Patrol Squadron 42 (PatRon 42), which consists of 4 old Wickes class Destroyers (King, Crane, Kilty, and Rathburne), and this Squadron is already credited with the sinking of I-16 of Los Angeles on the 24th.
CENTRAL PACIFIC
Intelligence and intercepted Enemy signals traffic are Indicating that the Japanese have now lost 2 of their I-boats in the Pearl Harbor area. I-19 was sunk by depth charge attack by a USN Destroyer Squadron, off Lahaina several days ago. It also has been confirmed today that I-25 which had been bombed by a Patrolling PBY Catalina off Johnston Island earlier this week, sunk yesterday while trying to return to Kwajalein.
RABAUL
Sadly the Australian Base of Rabaul has fallen to the Japanese today after a spirited defense by its defenders. It must be remembered that this Base was subjected to 3 straight days of air strikes, by the same Enemy Carrier Force that raided Pearl Harbor. That the Japanese used their main Carrier assets to subdue Rabaul, must mean that they have attached some priority to operations in this area.
SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
A Japanese Brigade Group renewed its assault on Cagayan today, but made no progress against the Allied positions, and the enemy also suffered heavy causalities in this action. Intercepted Enemy signals traffic is indicating that the Japanese are considering calling off the operation, as their Commander on the spot is complaining of having insufficient troops for the task. Allied Troop positions on Cebu Island were attacked by IJAAF aircraft today, causing only light causalities.
LUZON
Again Heavy air raids on the Clark Field area today by both the IJAAF, and IJNAF aircraft, with these raids causing some causality to the Allied Defenders. The Enemy also launched heavy ground assaults on the Allied fortified positions protecting Clark Field. Unfortunately the weight of the Japanese ground attack was such that they managed to overrun 1 of the 2 remaining defensive positions. It is now almost certain that the Allied troops in the Clark Field area will soon be forced back into the fall-back positions on the Bataan Peninsula.

It is sad to report that the British Bastion of Hong Kong was forced to surrender to the Enemy today, after an 18 days of residence to against far superior numbers of Japanese troops. Another day of air raids by The IJAAF in most regions of the Country, mainly against Chinese troop concentrations. A heavy Chinese ground assault against Japanese troops in the Nanchang area failed to make any headway today. There appears to be a sizeable Enemy force approaching Nanning from the south, and with heavy air raids on this City for the past several days, it must be considered that the Japanese intend to assault this City.
MALAYA
The RAF attacking Japanese shipping off Kuantan managed to get a bomb hit on a Battleship today, and it is also reported that a Transport was torpedoed in another raid. Meanwhile on the ground today the British Command started to withdraw the last of their units across the Causeway into Singapore. The withdrawal down the Malaya Peninsula has been so well coordinated that the Enemy as been unable to cut-off and trap any Commonwealth units. Moulmein was attacked by air again today, and some damage done to the Airfield. Also to the south off Kuching a Dutch torpedo bomber managed to hit an Enemy Transport.

The only action on the Coast for the day was the depth charge attack on an Enemy Submarine off San Francisco, by an ASW Task Force sent to investigate an air patrol sighting. This Task Force was Patrol Squadron 42 (PatRon 42), which consists of 4 old Wickes class Destroyers (King, Crane, Kilty, and Rathburne), and this Squadron is already credited with the sinking of I-16 of Los Angeles on the 24th.
CENTRAL PACIFIC
Intelligence and intercepted Enemy signals traffic are Indicating that the Japanese have now lost 2 of their I-boats in the Pearl Harbor area. I-19 was sunk by depth charge attack by a USN Destroyer Squadron, off Lahaina several days ago. It also has been confirmed today that I-25 which had been bombed by a Patrolling PBY Catalina off Johnston Island earlier this week, sunk yesterday while trying to return to Kwajalein.
RABAUL
Sadly the Australian Base of Rabaul has fallen to the Japanese today after a spirited defense by its defenders. It must be remembered that this Base was subjected to 3 straight days of air strikes, by the same Enemy Carrier Force that raided Pearl Harbor. That the Japanese used their main Carrier assets to subdue Rabaul, must mean that they have attached some priority to operations in this area.
SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
A Japanese Brigade Group renewed its assault on Cagayan today, but made no progress against the Allied positions, and the enemy also suffered heavy causalities in this action. Intercepted Enemy signals traffic is indicating that the Japanese are considering calling off the operation, as their Commander on the spot is complaining of having insufficient troops for the task. Allied Troop positions on Cebu Island were attacked by IJAAF aircraft today, causing only light causalities.
LUZON
Again Heavy air raids on the Clark Field area today by both the IJAAF, and IJNAF aircraft, with these raids causing some causality to the Allied Defenders. The Enemy also launched heavy ground assaults on the Allied fortified positions protecting Clark Field. Whitehouse Morning Briefing for Saturday December 27th 1941
WESTCOAST
The first action of the day was when a lone USN Destroyer exercising off San Francisco was attacked by an Enemy Submarine, luckily the Japanese torpedoes missed. The Destroyer USS Morris then Depth charged the Submarine in retaliation, and is known to have seriously damaged the Enemy vessel because of fuel and debris found in the water at the scene. Also to the north off Vancouver Island a group of Canadian Minesweepers on patrol attacked another Japanese Submarine.
CENTRAL PACIFIC
A cargo vessel in a convoy to the east of the Hawaiian Islands was attacked and sunk by an Enemy Submarine in the early hours of the morning. It is somewhat disconcerting that a Japanese Submarine was able to evade a heavy escort and sink this Ship in Convoy. The Convoy Commander was an experienced Man, so it must mean that the Skipper of this Submarine (I-17 from Intel) is a very aggressive Commander.
CORAL SEA AREA
Good news today from Port Moresby, where an Enemy Submarine (RO-61) was sunk by a combined RAN/USN Anti-Submarine Patrol Group. Also to the west in the Torres Strait off Thursday Island a USN Destroyer Squadron located and possibly sunk another Japanese Submarine (RO-62). This Enemy vessel had been operating in the southern exit into the Coral Sea, and had already sunk a large Allied Freighter in this area.
PHILIPPINES
Another morning of heavy Enemy air raids on the Clark Field area. Then in the afternoon the Japanese Ground Forces managed to push back the Allied Rearguard from the Clark Field area. The Allied withdrawal to the Bataan Peninsula worked flawlessly, with the Rearguard holding the line long enough for the Main Force to withdrawal unmolested by the Enemy. In the south at Cagayan the Enemy was content just to shell the Allied Defenders today. The Japanese also occupied Puerto Princesa today unopposed by the Allies.

The Enemy launched a number of air raids in China again today, mainly against Troop concentrations. But a number of Cities were hit also namely Honan, Nanning, and Yenen. The IJAAF launched a Bombing raid on Rangoon today, but the defending Allied Fighters (AVG) managed to turn the Raid back while shooting down several Enemy aircraft. The NEIAF raided an Enemy Convoy in the veracity of Kuching today, but it is not thought any hits were obtained.

WESTCOAST/PACIFIC AREA
Only action on the west coast in the last 48hours was an encounter between an Enemy Submarine, and some Canadian Minesweepers patrolling off Vancouver Island yesterday. Unfortunately the Submarine managed to evade the Minesweepers, and escape. There have been reports of Reconnaissance Over-flights of some of our Western Sea Frontier Islands by Enemy Long-range Flying-boats in the last few days. While no pattern can be determined by these flights it has been decided to speed up the reinforcement of these Islands. Enemy Signals Traffic is telling us that an Oilier struck one of our mines off their Base at Truk 2 days ago, and sunk yesterday.
PHILIPPINES
The Enemy is landing Troops (a Naval Infantry Regiment) at Cagayan again, to reinforce the troops already assaulting the Airbase. Enemy Naval Vessels have also bombarded our positions at Cagayan today in support of an Artillery Barrage, and it could be safely predicted that their assault would resume tomorrow. Heavy Enemy Air Raids against our Positions on the Bataan Peninsula in the last 48hours, by both the IJAAF, and IJNAF. Canadian Minesweepers patrolling off Vancouver Island again detected and depth-charged an Enemy Submarine, with it being presumed that they had damaged this Submarine. But in the same area and possibly by the same Japanese Submarine, one of the Canadian Minesweepers was torpedoed and sunk later in the day. A USN Submarine on picket off Wake is reporting a large Enemy Convoy passing the area, but it is not known if this convoy is carrying stores or troops. But as a precaution to the sighting at Wake, Air-Patrols to the west of the Hawaiian Islands have been increased.

The Enemy Ground Force have not closed-up on the Allied defensive positions on the Bataan Peninsula yet, and it is thought that he is building-up his supplies, and resting his troops before he closes in.

Japanese ‘Betty’ Naval Torpedo Bombers flying from Kuching yesterday attacked, and sunk a Dutch Minelayer south of Palembang. These same Naval Bombers base at Kucking raided the port of Palembang today, doing serious damage to a Tanker, and some fuel storage tanks.

Situation Briefing for Saturday 3rd January 1942 (also inclusive of 1st and 2nd of January)
PACIFIC AREA
A Destroyer task group located and sunk a Japanese submarine in the vicinity of Palmyra atoll. This Submarine is thought to have been I-3, and it is suspected to have been on picket duty across the sea approaches to the Island. Meanwhile USN Submarines in watching Wake have reported more Enemy shipping in the area, with the definite sighting of a Troop Transport yesterday.
NORTHERN AUSTRALIA
The Enemy has commenced an Air Campaign against Darwin, with long-range ‘Mavis’ Flying-boats overflying the town for the past three days. Then this morning there was a Fighter Sweep by 27 ‘Zero’ fighters, which was met by USAAF P-40s defending the Airfield. In the ensuring dogfight 1 of the attacking ‘Zeros’ was shot-down, but sadly for the loss of several P-40s. The raid is thought to be in retaliation to raids launched yesterday by the RAAF against Enemy Shipping in the Amboina area.
SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
IJAAF Aircraft have been pounding Allied Defensive Positions around Cagayan for the last three days, and yesterday the Enemy after being reinforced, launched a Ground assault that was easily repulsed causing the Japanese very heavy causalities. Today the Allied Troops put in a Counter Attack to force the Enemy away from the area, but unfortunately this attack failed.
LUZON
For the past three days both the IJAAF and IJNAF have launched heavy Air Raids against the Allied Positions on the Bataan Peninsula, with the IJNAF raids from Formosa containing over 150 of their Medium Naval Bombers. No Enemy Ground Forces have closed-up on the Bataan area yet, and it is thought that the Japanese are resting their troops, while also waiting for their Supply Situation to improve.

Air Raids in most parts of China for the past three days, with particularly heavy attacks on Yenen in the North, Nanchang, and Nanning in the South. Japanese Ground Forces have now managed to clear the East bank of the Yangtze River below the City of Kaifeng. A Destroyer task group located and sunk a Japanese submarine in the vicinity of Palmyra atoll. This Submarine is thought to have been I-3, and it is suspected to have been on picket duty across the sea approaches to the Island. Meanwhile USN Submarines in watching Wake have reported more Enemy shipping in the area, with the definite sighting of a Troop Transport yesterday.
NORTHERN AUSTRALIA
The Enemy has commenced an Air Campaign against Darwin, with long-range ‘Mavis’ Flying-boats overflying the town for the past three days. Then this morning there was a Fighter Sweep by 27 ‘Zero’ fighters, which was met by USAAF P-40s defending the Airfield. In the ensuring dogfight 1 of the attacking ‘Zeros’ was shot-down, but sadly for the loss of several P-40s. The raid is thought to be in retaliation to raids launched yesterday by the RAAF against Enemy Shipping in the Amboina area.
SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
IJAAF Aircraft have been pounding Allied Defensive Positions around Cagayan for the last three days, and yesterday the Enemy after being reinforced, launched a Ground assault that was easily repulsed causing the Japanese very heavy causalities. Today the Allied Troops put in a Counter Attack to force the Enemy away from the area, but unfortunately this attack failed.
LUZON
For the past three days both the IJAAF and IJNAF have launched heavy Air Raids against the Allied Positions on the Bataan Peninsula, with the IJNAF raids from Formosa containing over 150 of their Medium Naval Bombers. No Enemy Ground Forces have closed-up on the Bataan area yet, and it is thought that the Japanese are resting their troops, while also waiting for their Supply Situation to improve.

Air Raids in most parts of China for the past three days, with particularly heavy attacks on Yenen in the North, Nanchang, and Nanning in the South. Japanese Ground Forces have now managed to clear the East bank of the Yangtze River below the City of Kaifeng. The daily briefing had been postponed for a few days with the absense of his Majesty. This left Taisa Takagi with quite a bit of information to break down into a concise, but accurate report. One did not want to waste his Majesty's time.
"Majesty in your absense a number of events have transpired that are positive for your Majesty's forces. Unfortunately, there have also been some negative events. However, we are ahead of schedule over all and have seen the enemy's will to fight crumbling across all theatres."

Situation Briefing for Sunday 4th January 1942
PACIFIC AREA
In the early hours of the morning an enemy submarine managed put a torpedo into USS Louisville in the vicinity of Canton Island, it is reported that the heavy cruiser is very badly damaged, and may sink but every effort will be made to save her. Then later in the afternoon possibly the same submarine torpedoed a troop transport off Canton Island, but this time the escort was able to detect the attacker, and depth-charged the Enemy Submarine.
A USN cruiser task force managed to surprise the enemy in the early hours of the morning, and bombard the harbor at Tarawa damaging the docks and supply Dumps. Meanwhile to the west off the northwest coast of New Zealand another transport was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, it is thought that this vessel will survive. The RNZN have also reported that their units escorting this transport attacked, and possibly sunk the enemy submarine.

Japanese launched another IJNAF fighter sweep on Darwin today, along with some more reconnaissance over-flights. The fighter sweep was again met by USAAF P-40s protecting the airfield, and in the ensuing dogfight 1 of the enemy fighters were bought down for the loss of 5 P-40s.
The enemy also landed in the vicinity of the Port of Manado in the Celebes area this morning, and the Dutch defenders were shelled by a Japanese Naval Force at the same time. But the Enemy is not expected to assault the Port until tomorrow.

CELEBES/ SOUTHERN BORNEO AREAS
Enemy forces continues to land at Manado in the last 24hrs, but have not attacked the Dutch defenders as yet. It is also reported by the Dutch that enemy carrier aircraft raided the airfield at Manado this afternoon, and it is thought that these aircraft were launched from a light carrier force to the north.
S-38 has reported that she torpedoed an enemy Fibuki class destroyer off the Manado landings at dawn this morning. The Dutch also report that their light-cruiser Sumatra was torpedoed west of Bali this afternoon; and that she is still afloat and heading for the nearest port.
Balikpapan was struck in the afternoon by a large carrier aircraft raid of such size that it could only have come from their main carrier striking force. It is suspected that the enemy launched this raid from the north in the western Celebes Sea, and the concern is there was no warning from Allied patrol aircraft in the area.

NORTHERN AUSTRALIA
Large air battle this day over Darwin, when IJNAF bombers escorted by over 100 Zero fighters launched from Amboina attacked the Harbor area. The RAAF and USAAF put up over 40 fighters in defense of the shipping in the harbor, but the superior number of enemy fighters managed to shoot down most of the defending fighters
The enemy bombers bombed the docks and harbor area causing some damage and casualties, but luckily only managed to hit only two ships in the harbor. One of the vessels damaged was unfortunately the old carrier Langley, which had managed to escape from Manila.
It is recorded today that a RAAF Buffalo 1 pilot base at Darwin managed to shot down one of the superior Zero fighters. His name is Pilot Officer G Middelton of No21 Squadron RAAF, who was unfortunately wounded later in the engagement when his aircraft was shot down, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

A patrolling RNZN anti-submarine force detected and attacked an enemy submarine this morning, in the coastal shipping lanes north of Auckland. It is suspected that this may be the same submarine that torpedoed a transport in this area several days ago. It is thought that the enemy vessel suffered some damage in this encounter.

The Bataan Peninsula has been pounded again for the last two days, by both the IJAAF and IJNAF. But the morale of Allied troops still remains high. There has still been no move by the enemy to close up with his troops on the Allied positions on the Peninsula.

Main news from China today is the Japanese ground attack on Wuchow, after heavy air raids and an artillery bombardment yesterday. The attack today on the City was easily repulsed by the Chinese defenders, while causing very heavy losses to the enemy.
Also heavy air attacks on Chinese and Red Chinese forces in the Yenen area in the last 48hrs, while the Japanese have also been clearing Red Chinese units from the forests to the south of Yenen. It would be a fair assumption that the enemy is clearing his communications for a move on Yenen.

The Bataan Peninsula has been pounded again for the last two days, by both the IJAAF and IJNAF. But the morale of Allied troops still remains high. There has still been no move by the enemy to close up with his troops on the Allied positions on the Peninsula.
CHINA
Main news from China today is the Japanese ground attack on Wuchow, after heavy air raids and an artillery bombardment yesterday. The attack today on the City was easily repulsed by the Chinese defenders, while causing very heavy losses to the enemy.
Also heavy air attacks on Chinese and Red Chinese forces in the Yenen area in the last 48hrs, while the Japanese have also been clearing Red Chinese units from the forests to the south of Yenen. It would be a fair assumption that the enemy is clearing his communications for a move on Yenen.
MALAYA/ BURMA
Heavy raid on the airfields around Singapore by the IJNAF from Kucking. Then today the IJAAF from northern Malaya bombed the port, and managed to sink the 6 PT-boats that had escaped from Hong Kong. The IJAAF also launched a raid on Rangoon today which damaged some airfield buildings.
BORNEO
Air raid on Jesselton for the last two days by aircraft from the enemy light carrier force, and then their naval infantry managed to take the town this afternoon. Also a naval bombardment on Singawang this morning, which fell to Japanese Army troops later in the day.
