CVEs
Anyone got a use for the USN Long Island and Bogue and IJN CVEs? They show up with no Air Groups and all the orphaned Navy AGs at land bases are larger (and getting LARGER) than their capacity. Just thought of something...can we base Marine AG on Navy carriers?

Hi
I agree with DGAAD that they can be used as a bait or used to give the oppenent false indications of a build up or invasion.
I once had a CV battle close to Australia and therefore some CAG units made it to those bases. I wanted them back to Noumea but their range is not long enough so I used Long Island. When the ship reached the base I could no longer find my CAG group! Thats how I recall it anyway. Might be wrong.

I used the Long Island in a transport group trying to land an invasion force in an area well within range of numerous bombers based at Rabaul. I loaded it with a fighter wing, put it in the TF and found it very useful.
It's use was that the Betty's and Nell's all attacked the Long Island, over and over, getting dozens of hits on it, so my transports were left alone for one turn.
Oh yeah, and it sank so I had one less "CV" and I suppose that makes it a little easier to get ships released from Pearl. Some players have been sending the Long Island back to Pearl trying to get the commitment from LOW to MODERATE but then Pearl can just send you the Long Island back again. If you get it sunk they have to send you something else.

Maybe Long Island
Hi,
Long Island might have been too small for fighter bombers but other classes weren't. Remember the battle between the CVE groups and the Japanese battle fleet at Leyte Gulf!

According to the DANFS history...
SO! If it can't fly aircraft, something's wrong.
According to the DANFS history...
LONG ISLAND departed San Diego 8 July 1942 and arrived Pearl Harbor the 17th. After a training run south to Palmyra Island, the ship loaded two squadrons of Marine Corp aircraft and got underway for the South Pacific 2 August. Five days later, the marines, while landing on Guadalcanal, encountered stiff opposition and needed more air support than could be provided by the handful of carriers available during the early months of the war. Touching Fiji Islands 13 August, LONG ISLAND then steamed to a point 200 miles southeast of Guadalcanal and launched her aircraft. These planes, the first to reach Henderson Field, were instrumental in the liberation of Guadalcanal and went on to compile a distinguished war record. Her mission was accomplished in an outstanding fashion. Reclassified ACV-1 on 20 August, LONG ISLAND sailed for Efate, New Hebrides, and arrived 23 August.
SO! If it can't fly aircraft, something's wrong.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Don't think a single AC from the LI did a combat mission. She served strictly as an aircraft ferry. Ferrying "ready to fly" AC on a purpose built AC ferry/CVE saved thousands of manhours of prep time over one shipped in a crate, and hundreds over one shipped on the deck of a freighter (or the other way around, disremember). Their inclusion much more realistic than PacWar's "load them onto a freighter and they're ready to fly the day after unloading" routine.
Generally, the USN AC ferries are useless in UV...right up until you need one desperately to move short-ranged AC from one side of the theatre to the other. I usually build an intermediate AF on Rossel Islands for transfering AC...in a PBEM game, that isn't always an option. Giving them CAG's wouldn't be historical, not including them would be...bad.

I haven't used Long Island, but yeah, if you can do transfer base missions off them on say, 18 plane air groups, its all good.
However, other CVEs, say, Sangamon, did fly combat aircraft.

Not having played UV that much, someone tell me if it can fly aircraft.By mid-January 1943, SANGAMON had arrived at Efate, New Hebrides. As a unit of Carrier Division 22 (CarDiv 22), she operated in the New Caledonia--New Hebrides--Solomons area for the next eight months. With SUWANEE (CVE-27) and CHENANGO (CVE-28), she provided protection for resupply convoys en route to Guadalcanal and for the assault forces
moving on the Russells.

Hi Xpav,
I have successfully used the LI to ferry planes from Noumea to Brisbane. However, there is a problem with planes disappearing from the LI. For me, every time I tried to operate planes that had diverted from a sunk CV, they disappeared on the turn after they arrive on the LI. It should be able to operate as it did historically if not for this problem. I believe Matrix is aware of the problem but have not commented on a specific fix yet.

USS Sangamon
XPav,
I used the scenario editor (scenario 17) to obtain the following info:
USS Sangamon:
VF-26 18 x F4F-4 Wildcat
VC-26b 7 x SBD Dauntless
VC-26t 8 x TBF Avenger
USS Chenango:
VF-28 11 x F4F-4 Wildcat
VC-28b 8 x SBD Dauntless
VC-28t 9 x TBF Avenger
USS Suwannee:
VF-27 18 x F4F-4 Wildcat
VC-27 15 x TBF Avenger
So CarDiv 22 rides again.

IIRC, the Army Dauntlesses have a different designation A-Something, which in deed does not appear in the list of planes which can be carrier based. I have successfully flown Marine fighters off of the L.I. and other carriers.Originally posted by UndercoverNotChickenSalad
The 16 dauntless I loaded were army. Is why they weren't flying. Not sure if navy FBers will work on her none are available.
