Canada vs Sweden Campaign 41

Post by MB00 »

I finally have an opponent[from Sweden]. While we both wanted Russia, I accepted German with EVEN reinforcements for both.

The 1st week's battle was well planned(as expected). Many German troops were surrounded and are awaiting POW encampment during week 2.

Week 2 :
saw 2 german armour units break the river line se of Riga. A russian armour unit retaliated by cutting their supply lines.

Advancement upon Minsk was limited due to German movement. The Fuhrer was disappointed and is considering replacing Bock - of Army Group Center HQ.

Rapid advancement spearheaded by german armour units are within 3 hexes of Zhitomar. Unfortunately, some Russian stragglers and rump troops are anticipated to cut the supply line before the start of week 3. More later.

Most of the Russian Armour w or sw of Zhitomar are surrounded and negotiating POW internment next week.

The russians succeeded in rebuffing the rush across the 1st river line 3 or 4 hexes W of Odessa. The Fuhrer has been convinced that the crossing will be achieved next week. A senior SS officer with direct orders from Hitler has been sent to the 11th HQ commanded by Schobert to encourage achievement. No one of the General Staff has been able to obtain information about these apparently secret direct orders.

The air war was a surprise. Week one seen claims of some 1400 Russian aircraft destroyed for only 80 of ours. Week two stats appear to be 600 russian aircraft for yet 90 of ours. Strategists are uncertain how to present this to the Fuhrer who is as yet unaware of such stats. Intelligence suggests that there remain hordes of Russian aircraft. The loss ratio suggests that something unexpected happened. The General Staff is concerned about the implications with respect to supply and future land combats. It is concluded that daily reports will be necessary during next week's fighting.

Week 3 :
As expected, there was much surrendering of Russian troops this turn across the front. Well, there was really nothing s of Riga to surrender in the 1st place.

The daring Russian armour who cut supply to our 2 German armour core got massacred...though it did require diversion of one of the Minsk directed armour corps to straighten things out. Infantry troops are now on 3 sides of Riga and another significant surrender of Riga troops is anticipated for next week. Negotiations have yet to start though.

The replacement of Bock of Army Group Center led to surrounding Minsk this week. The Fuhrer is satisfied! The General Staff is estactic. Not only was Minsk surrounded, but the HQ behind Minsk was also overran with the capture of some 600 Russian planes.

Alas, near Zhitomar; it was decided that the advanced German armour corps would need to fight its way back to a supply source. Orders were issued to other armour corps in the area to not take chances and ensure that no rump or straggler russian infantry were left behind them.

SE of Lvov, one armour corps was ordered to advance down the eastern side of the middle river line. Most enemy units were pushed back in the ensuing battles.

A second armour corps was ordered to advance into position to move down the east side of the 3rd most eastern river line during week 4.

It is anticipated that the Russians - being Russians, will stand still and week 5 will see the collapse of russian forces in/around Odessa. Russian armour POWs of the area are being pushed to take winter plows from local farmers so as to attach them to the captured russian tanks(without guns or ammunition). Such equipment will allow clearance of brush and whatnot to create the open fields necessary for the anticipated Russian POW camps.

Schobert(11th HQ) achieved a breakthrough across the middle river with his infantry in 2 places west of Odessa. While Russian counterattacks are anticipated(even welcomed), it is expected that the railway conversion will extend itself across the river this turn. The mysterious SS officer is reported to be enroute by train back to Berlin. Little is known about him other than that Schobert seemed tense at receiving news of the battle results in attempting to cross the river.

The air war continues to be a bit screwy. The commander of the Air Force on the General Staff is wary of any news getting to Hitler. Some 200 German pilots were wounded or killed this week. This does not seem correct when Intelligence suggests only some 1600 Russian pilots suffered the same fate. Intelligence has brushed aside the capture of the 600 pilots around Minsk. This 8:1 ratio fails in comparison to week one's ratio of 1400:80 ! It is feared that the morale of German pilots is not the equal of their land compatriots...who are chortling about who cares about the air battles when the army is wading through russian air parts.

The russian repost(week 3)...especially in the south is awaited with eagerness. The General Staff remains confident that Moscow is only a blade of grass away...though it was acknowledged that logistical supplies had to be rethought. Action has been taken to re-arrange the supply processes through the numerous HQ and more clerks have been brought from Germany to augment the quartermasters and improve efficiency.

Heil !

I am also involved in a game against an opponent from Sweden (Or perhaps he is involved in a game against an opponent from Canada?). It must be a hockey thing, or perhaps Canadian national envy for not being at the World Cup.....

Week 4 German actions

Post by MB00 »

German troops continued their advance toward Riga in good order. Some nefariousness was discovered in territory previously thought controlled. A brief search for instigators found no russians in the vicinity and orders were made to continue onward.

Dagauvil was near to surrounded. It is being rumoured that the mechanized corps will negotiate surrender terms in the next week.

Minsk was likewise surrounded. Negotiations for surrender of the garrison is nearing completion.

Zhitomar appears in the near distance.

Odessa led to general grumpiness amongst the German General Staff. Virtually ALL SS soldiers and officers in and around Berlin were engaged to bring all available press types to the grand stadium. There, two of their more influential international colleagues were brought to the podium. Their statement clarified that the massive POW camps NW of Odessa will remain empty as Russian troops have been observed leaving Odessa heading east. The grand capture is off. Immediately thereafter, they were shot as they stepped off the podium. It is uncertain if they knew what was to happen. The immediate shock was resolved when the Fuhrer claimed that they had committed treason and as such received their just reward. It is feared that many German soldier boys will suffer in crossing the 3rd and last river on the way toward Kiev.
The inside story is that the soldier boys were at that time keenly appreciative of the many lonely ladies left on the outskirts of Odessa. The city beckons them with a very bright red light. It appears that besides being bereft of russian soldiers, all males age 8 - 80 have also vanished. Officers have warned their soldiers to eat at the army camps for fear of poison.

The General Staff is grumpy because it has become apparent to the Fuhrer that there are not enough SS soldiers inside Germany. Due to this, the next influx of German youths to the military high command will be reassigned as SS soldiers.
In addition,
General Quartermaster of the General Staff has received
reports that the huge stockpiles of supplies built up in
preparation for Operation Barbarosa are virtually gone.
With quiet alarm, he has approached Herr Himmler to
start a search for SS officers with knowledge of
accounting and auditing. It is planned
to quietly use the normal rotation process to insert such
officers into all the HQ offices to verify the status of
supplies. Himmler has been dissuaded from mentioning
this item to Hitler as the battle operation is currently going well.
Generals of the field HQ below the rank of Army Group
will also not be advised of this investigation.

The air battle statistics continue to remain dismal at 1000 : 120. Several attacks at enemy airbases are thought to improve the ratio...but uncertainty persists.

Onward to the slugfest. Those many blades of grass appear to be empty of human faces or their weoponry...but oh there are so many of them.

Week 5 is completed...but due to security about future potential directions, the press is being kept mum.

Berlin, July 22 1941.

Germans Week 5

Post by MB00 »

sometime in July 41:(turn 5 in game terms)
The German land force continues to move eastward. Supplies continue to be gobbled up. The air battle continues in a relatively poor state (600 Russians : 80 Germans).

The 2nd week of relatively low losses for the Russians. Hitler is pleased as he interprets that the russians can no longer afford to lose 5000 sqds and 3000 tanks per week.

An unusual unexpected shatter of a strong unit SE of Zhitomar gave relief to German tankers who had feared its survival and imminent threat of cut off of supplies during the following week. The General Staff sees it as more indication of the low morale of Russian troops in the field. An emmissary to Zhitomar has been sent into the city to request their peaceful surrender.

Nary a land battle in sight and the combat round seems over before it could begin. Are the russians hiding?

On the home front :
The SS officers have quietly reported(unfortunately
through Himmler) that fuel is being consumed
as it arrives in the local HQ. There is no longer any
stockpile anywhere other than in Germany. Ammunition
and food continues to be in good supply. A possible
reason for the fuel consumption is that local farmers also
have free access to fuel supply dumps for farming
purposes. Several HQ quartermasters were put into
detention for other minor charges by the SS. The
field HQ generals still do not know the real concern.

General Quartermaster has requested Himmler to assign
SS staff to tomorrow's General Staff - Generals meeting.
A proposal to implement fuel rationing outside of
Germany proper, will be tabled. Ukrainian and Polish
farmers will be put on restricted access to fuel supply
dumps. The Productions Minister will be requested to
design and prepare printing press plates for suitable
ration coupons. SS staff will supervise all efforts relative to
creation of such fuel rations coupons.

The staff meeting resolves that General Quartermaster
MUST be the one to inform Hitler and that he should do
so before the end of the week.

Heil !

German T6

Post by MB00 »

I am now actively plotting the Aug 10, 41 German move.(T8) Turn 6 seems long ago in the shrouded mists of time.

A lot of this is from memory(i left my notes at work last night)

Not much fighting this turn. Nary a Russian gun in sight.

The infantry continue to advance on all fronts.

The news from the home front was the most surprising.
Week 6:
Field HQ generals have been notified of fuel rationing in
subject countries. Efforts to restrict fuel usage when
training recruits in the use of their tanks is being
investigated.

The new General Quartermaster has re-assigned most of
the field HQ quartermasters to supervising Russian POW
teams building railways. Special huts inside the POW
encampments have been built for their personal benefit.

Polish and Ukranian farmers are becoming vocal in their
criticism of not obtaining fuel to do their farming with
harvest time approaching. The new field HQ
quartermasters appear to have become deaf to their plees.

The General Staff is preparing to draft documentation on
the MANY blades of grass yet between them and Moscow.
No one wants to accept authorship of such and the
possibility of tabling it to Hitler quietly avoids discussion.

Week 7: Aug 3, 41
A german armour suffered the embarrassment of lack of fuel supply. This led to a major combat embarrassment as it failed to support its brother armour unit in an attack across the river NE of Vitebsk. The General Staff is involved trying to appease the irate German general who's forces suffered mightily. It is somewhat feared that distrust amongst German corps will result with less than desirable achievements on the battlefield.

Catastrophe strikes.

An armour corps making a cross river attack against a prepared defence NE of vitebsk was bloodied. It is uncertain if it will attempt a further attack on week 8 without other substantial help.
German tankers mistook the air above them as their own. NE of Vitebsk, they learned to their sorrow that the Russians still had airplanes. More to the point, there exist
Russian pilots who know how to fly them. Where was the German Luftwaffe?

The German General Staff has convinced itself that the tankers lament was due to limitations upon fuel usage. Large forward bounds by German tankers will likely be restricted in future.
The local General will still have authority and initiative to pursue such bounds...but woe to the general making a future mistake.

Relatively speaking, the loss was not catastrophic for the German army. It is the first time tank losses have exceeded 200 in a single week. It compares against the 700 Russian tanks
captured in the same week-Aug 3, 41. Since commencement of Operation Barbarosa, some 6,400 Russian tanks have been reportedly destroyed/captured vs only some 700 German tanks.
The suddenness of the jump in weekly losses from 60 to 200 is the shock. Losing some 100 tanks in one specific battle was like having the airbase bombed without aircover.

Actions elsewhere are anticipated to restore the fuel supply limitations.

Pskov did fall to German arms and the way to Leningrad appears open. Unfortunately, another fuel crisis allowed the Russian defenders of the city to find a bolt hole to slink into west of the city proper. German infantry units are certain to feel pleased that they be allowed the priviledge of fighting again after the long uneventful marches from Riga.

The Finns are actively pursueing their objectives into Leningrad though no advancement was reported by our intelligence sources. A bloody blow by our Finish allies was
delivered to the Russians so that all would know that the Finns are actively engaged. Celebrations of the German victory at Pskov led to numerous popular arguements on Helsinki radio as to the allocation of what parts of the city of Leningrad will be awarded the Finns for their efforts. Other concerns of the populous suggest that the Finns will continue their support of their German colleagues on the route to Moscow.

Most of the units that were recently seen retreating from Odessa were caught on the railroad going past Uman. It proved to be a sizable trap of Russian forces. While the prepared POW camps NW of Odessa are not crowded, German administrators are
relieved that the camps will at least see usage.

The enemy has been met....and he is recognized as us.(supply limitations)

The Air General on the General Staff has remarked that all those empty rail cars travelling west to Germany after disgorging their food and ammunition supplies could be used to ferry airmen back to Germany to visit family. The SS could supervise their welcome into the air factories to talk with technicians and engineers on air plane combat. The pilots and ground crews would benefit from expert advise on the strengths of their aircraft. The newer F190A now coming off the assembly lines would then have even more disasterous effects upon our Russian foes if handled properly by our pilots and ground crews.
The General of logistics has promised that he will look into it. He suspects that the "empty" returning rail cars are more likely full of the raw materials needed for making the new F190A airplanes and is rather concerned with the wrath of the civilian political leaders reaction to reduced raw materials for the benefit of a few soldier airmen.

Week Aug 10 41

Post by MB00 »

A decade before i was born arrives.
In game terms, i admit that i have been lapse as turn 11, Aug 31, 1941 is now over. J of Sweden is off on a work/stress? travel assignment for the week.

The march forward continues in an orderly fashion. Notes are taken as to the position of Russian armies that we can currently see.

The Russians appear to notice that Pskov fell last week and so abandoned their pitiless effort to repel borders((35,8) on the river NNW of Pskov. Our troops quietly move forward. Unfortunately, an armour corps had moved to support them which became noted as unnecessary. The fortunes of war. It could have been used in the first forward assault on the Leningrad guard!

Further movement WSW of Vitebsk to insert units in position to surround Vitebsk are well underway.

Troops moved up for the assault on Mogilev next week. Sufficient should be available to make it a no contest effort. An emissary has been sent into the city to seek surrender...with quite liberal terms.

A lone unit has been sent to the west of Gomel. The Russians on the east side of the river between Mogiliev and Gomel appear fierce and excited about action. We forebore to introduce them to the concept of Blitskrieg.

Kiev is captured and crossing the southern River lines is being actively investigated by our intelligence services. It appears that several Russian units are newly formed and unorganized.

In the north, the Finns press the Russians. Unexpectedly, and bravely, 4 consecutive assaults in the week lead to the capitulation of Russian forces on their front. The way to city directly north of Leningrad is now open to assault. Furthermore, the swamps to the east and west of the city appear empty of Russian forces. The advance is on !! We are coming to expect great things of our Finnish compatriots.

Week 9: Aug 17,41
Movement and positioning advance on the Leningrad front commences. It is found that our Finnish colleagues need to contend with limited supply and hence will not pursue an attack this week. It frees their airforce assets to support us in a double whammy against the southern Leningrad front lines.

Advancement on Velikiye Luki is made under good march order.

Horrors, an air attack on Mogilev fails to get through the Russian fighter screen. All the bombers turned back! This bodes ill for the central front march on Moscow.

The faint cadre of Russian units precariously eeking out an existance in the Rumanian mountains have finally surrendered. The General Staff is relieved that the 6 divisions pursueing these renegades are now freed to advance elsewhere.

Units have been assigned to march through the southern most swamps toward Sevastopol. It is expected that this should be an easy march as our airforce and intelligence reports nary a trace of Russian military activity.

Infiltration across the river E-SE of Kiev is achieved. It had been noted some time ago that this hex appeared void of Russian entrenchment efforts. Congratulating out intelligence colleagues, the infantry forces were successful.

To the SE @ 46,36 and 46,37; two German armour also succeed in crossing the river. The town of Poltava is now in sight.

A slow march toward Denepropski continues for the infantry. At least, there are no hidden surprised Russian units to stall their advance.

In a surprise move, the Russians retreated from Vitebsk giving up this city without a fight. It must have been the sound of all that armour rumbling in the night all of last week. German soldiers are proud of the fear they have put into the hearts of their russian ruffian opponents. The way to Moscow appears clear. Just some mopping up to do near Smolensk.

A gamble on the part of our armour troops west of Gomel pays off. The Germans are now advanced SE across yet another river. Good times are ahead as another Blitzkrieg appears in the offing to wrap up the Russian rifraff along the east side of the river stretching NW from Gomel.

Week 10: Aug 24, 41
What's this? The infantry assaults to cross the river between Mogilev and Smolensk have failed. Enemy army #32 @ 43,23 held and kept the infantry unit assigned to cross the river from even approaching the river. The colonels of the flank infantry units #5 and #13 are enraged that their men were successful in clearing the hex beyond the river to the SE of 43,23 only to find that the 8th Korps was in no position to make the river crossing. Army Group center is a noisy place. The colonel of 8th Korps is being replaced. Courtmarshal proceedings are being considered.
Sub units of 8th Korps will be redistributed and replaced with more energitic german manpower.

Another disaster! Two cheeky Russian armies directly east from Kiev hiding east of the river line refuse to lay down their weapons! Army #64 and #65 are still fighting despite our efforts to encourage them that surrender is the honourable way. Our armour coming from the west side of the river was rebuffed...despite support from the infantry already across the river!

The General Staff is concerned. This has never before happended. It is recognized that this kind of news will give heart to other Russian troops and Stalin. We had just had overtures from the Russian embassy in Berlin that there may be a hint of an opportunity for peace in the near future. This is disastrous indeed. The war could continue beyond xmas. The troops will not be pleased. The womenfolk of the Reich. OH!

Week 11: Aug 31, 41
Well, enough of that. The cheeky russians did not have the courage to return back to the hex behind their obstructionist army #32. The river between Mogilev and Smolensk is now truely breeched.

Gomel forces surrendered and 2 infantry Korps have joined our armoured bridgehead. Blitzkrieg on the units hiding behind (east)the river stretching NW of Gomel is to proceed.

Kiev russian armies #64 and #65 were left to rot in their hideouts as numerous German troops maneuvered around them. They are being encouraged to tremble in their socks. The General Staff is considering butchering them when they surrender as a demonstration for future acts of stupidity by Russian arms. They can provide standing still live target practise for newly inducted German youths assigned to the front. They can get their first blood!

Enough of the insults and repercussions to those dastardly Russians. Elsewhere:
The Finnish supply situation appears grim. They simply lack the rail capacity to support their troops. Despair by the German General Staff is that there will be no more support until rail lines from Germany are brought to their aid through Leningrad. Combined use of the Finnish air forces is being arranged for the assault on Leningrad from the south.

Russian army #4 @ hex 39,9 was sent packing. Leningrad is now in sight. intelligence reports that this Russian army is now out of the fight as they were last reported in the vicinity of hex 43,8.

Additional German units from the south started working their way east of the river near Demyansk. An infantry unit is expected to surround the city next week.

Intelligence reports a relatively strong Russian pressence in hex 45,21 beside one of our HQ. Diversion of units assigned to attack the city of Smolensk will deal with this upstart. The General Staff is questioning where are these Russians forever coming from? Perhaps another target practise session for new recruits is in order. The SS will be ordered to ensure that the word will get back to Russian troops so as to discourage this type of stupidity in future. Concern is mounting that these situations will derail our plans for xmas in Moscow this winter. Picayune details are becoming annoying.

The rail line west of Gomel has been joined with that coming past Kiev. German soldiers are relieved that adequate food supplies will be delivered. At least one HQ has crossed the southern river in support of our troops.

Our troops were restrained from attacking Poltava this turn. Advancement of the infantry processed without restraint. A russian HQ @ hex 46,32 with some 400 aircraft was detained and directed toward POW camps.

Dnepropski was surrounded as German Infantry moved up for the assault if necessary. No word has been heard from our peace emissary sent into the city 2 days ago. Concern among the local generals for their welfare has been raised to Army Group South HQ.

The march toward Sevastopol also proceeds without any sight of Russian arms.

Of 13 combats this week, 4 resulted in surrenders, 5 shattered russian armys were sheltered and provided food rescue, 3 retreated, 1 held. The 10th army near Leningrad(hex 40,9) was given a first bruising in preparation for the full assault next week.

Hitler has been advised that Moscow may be delayed till summer 42...but that Leningrad may be ours as early as Oct 1, 41. Hitler is adamnant that the instant Leningrad is to fall, troops be directed toward Moscow. He reminded the General Staff that wintering in Russia was not part of the operational plans!

Knowledge of fuel rationing outside Germany proper is now common amongst the populace. Concern that such rationing will disrupt the victory parties being held by the powerful is the quiet talk of the ballrooms. Amongst the common man, disquiet in the city of Berlin is like a suffocating fog as news trickles out about recent difficulties. The SS is insistent that they are tracking down all doubters for questioning.

Heil !

Game OVER

Post by MB00 »

The Russians have capitulated. Heil Hitler!

Surprising as it may seem, 3 weeks before the rains fall; Jerker of Sweden sues for peace.

Total Stats :
German Losses :
SQD 5,170
AFV 1,498
Guns 727
Aircrft 1,503

Russian Losses :
SQD 42,850
AFV 8,844
Guns 15,798
Aircrft 12,119

The following email confirms it :

OK. You've convinced me. You are going to chew me up completely before the onset of winter so there is no point in going on.
My password was 'aphextwin' in case you want to see my side.
We could start a new game with me as german, but I think I have to have a better look at the problems facing the germans by playing against the AI a bit first. Could we postpone it to after you get back from your August vacation? That'd give me some time.

R Army #10 and #64 continue to be an annoyance.
Otherwise, a number of surprising Shatters results with many Russian inf squad captures.

It appears that if i have not succeeded in encouraging you to admit defeat by now, the capture of Leningrad may.

As this was the transfer turn from railbase 8 supply to railbase 6 supply, i expect to do better and more damage next turn!

Mike B

Other news on the front was the following :
A Russian unit W + SW of Leningrad was seen retreating to a hex directly SE of Leningrad. Such hex was obviously empty and has had little time to entrench...provided i get to attack it soon.
My eyes deceive me!!!
The actual combat turn shows a 6e unit with much much tank strength. Alternatively, a German armour unit @ 48,24 is not noticed by the 2 Russian HQ next door.("curious").

2 infantry and 1 armour are moving N to surround the troops w of the River SE of Mogilev. [These are all noted to be 5e]

The troops around Kiev are hesitant about moving forward while an active enemy remains in their rear. We failed to force their surrender a 2nd or is it 3rd time now.

The rail juncture leading into Sevastopol is German. While the troop is surrounded by Russian control, it is now entrenched at level 2. This should stop additional russian troops from railing into Sevastopol.[Nothing Russian in sight...except 2 weak inf @ Sevastopol itself]

As russian, you should never surrender until the game is over! I lost Leningrad, had germans in the Rostov vincinity and had Moscow encircled; then came the blizzard and while I still haven't got Leningrad; I have the germans pushed back so far that I am waiting for the railway to get changed back to uncivilized width.

Potential CHEATING by Germans!

Post by MB00 »

It is possible that "i had unintentionally cheated" in our game. There exists concern that saving a PBEM game mid turn(of plotting) ...leads...to recalculation of rail conversion and readiness of that side's units. This would cause DOUBLE rail conversions and perhaps significantly improve the readiness/supply capacity of German units.

As i do not have WIRASSISTANT on my game machine, i tended to load the turn, plot the movement etc, save to H, save to G, run combat, then email result of save G to you.

As i do this immediately BEFORE running the combat without looking at any more troops, i did not notice anything untoward. I might have noticed once that readiness seemed to have increased. I believe i reran from loading(not sure). My purpose was to have a version that i could reference in the interim of the email reply such that i could at least see moves done...if not planned plots(which appear to get erased while loading a PBEM save game). The version H also allowed me to reference it while playing the next turn...as i could see where Russian units had been located prior to the last combat(intelligence due to past turn...without paper). I will post this concern at the end of the Canada vs Sweden website.

It would be nice if this concern could be posted to ALL new recruits...who are likely not aware of this potential conflict of interest. mea culpa ! in my first human to human game. What else can i say?
