Battle for An Loc - 1972 (vs AI)

Post by Grymme »

I am playing a quick game against the AI on normal setting. AI is playing the DRNV forces. I am playing ARVN with US air support. DRVN advantage option is turned on.

Here is the scenario briefing.

The battle for An Loc

BACKGROUND
This is an operational scenario about the battle for An Loc in april-may 1972 between the NVA and the ARVN. The NVA tries to capture the village of An Loc and the airfield close to it before the relief collumns from the ARVN reaches the village.

Ground scale is two kilometres per Hex, units scale varies from brigade to battalion. Time scale is semiweekly; each turn correspond to 5 days.

Each hex of the village and the airfield is each worth VPs. The scenario lasts 10 rounds. If the NVA has captured 3 of the 4 objectives at that time the NVA wins. If ARVN holds 2 of the 4 objectives or more the ARVN wins.

RULE CHANGES
- Paradrops can land on urban, plains and light forrest terrain.
- Helicopters are like short ranged tactical bombers that can carry 10 inf.
- Airplanes move at quadrupel speed.

OPTIONS
Setting the option DRVN advantage gives the DRVN regime 10 SMGs and 10 Rifles in reinforcement each round.

REINFORCEMENTS
- After round 1 the DRVN regime recieves 1 mobilized Flak II each turn.
- On round 2 the DRVN regime recieves 1 inf regiment.
- On round 5 the DRVN regime recieves a T63 Tank Battalion , a T154 Tank Battalion and 2 inf regiments. Provided the DRVN has suffered at least 50 strengthpoints of losses.

- On turn 2 the RVN regime recieves the complete 21st infantry division with a 155mm artillery battery together with the 3rd Airborne Brigade and the 9th Armoured Cavalry regiment.
- On turn 5 the RVN recieves the 19th infantry division with a 155mm artillery battery.
- On turn 7 the RVN regime recieves a second unit of B52 bombers.

Round 2

NVA forces surround a ranger battalion occupiying the swamp west of An loc. They also drive out IIbat/5th Division from its strong position to the north of An Loc. Losses amount to some 400 men. Enemy losses estimated to around 500 men. A strong armoured unit ís in danger of cutting of my northern trenches.

In the south i have recieved strong reinforcements that will be sent to relieve An Loc. the 21st division of ARVN. FNL battalions have moved into contact with the relief forces.

During my round i move in airsupply to An Loc and land another airborne battalion in the city. My airforce bombard the FNL battalion in the south that is in contact with my forces. After the bombardment the enemy is driven back with large losses.

Around An Loc i bombard the armoured unit with all i have got. Then i gather all i have left of Rangers, Militia and Airborne forces to strike it from four different directions and destroy it. 2 squads of light tanks escape into the jungle.

Posted this thread in the wrong place. Would someone please move it to the AAR section :)

Round 3

DRVN round

Enemy forces assault the 13th Militia battalion that is occupying the mountainroad south of An Loc. The battalion loses some 70 % of its force and retreats. Losses is some 300 men for the ARVN and the same for FNL/NVA.

In the southern road the enemy is keeping contact with my forces.

ARVN round

I recieve the 3rd Airborne brigade as reinforcements.

During my round i deliver the usual airsupply and fly in I bat/3rd Airborne brigade to An Loc. My forces in An Loc is steadily diminishing so i have to give up some ground.

Airstrikes against the units surrounding An Loc is followed up with an assault on the NVA artillery battalion that was getting to close to hour lines. It is destroyed.

In the south my relief force is speeding north as fast as it can. It makes contact with the enemy at the village Ap Tau O.
