CVE Capacity

Post by OldCoot »

Stock Scenario 15 Playing as allies.

The capacity of CVE Long Island as shown on the Ship Information Screen is 16. Recently I transferred 24 P-40s to her, shipped them to Wake, and then transferred them to the base. All were undamaged.

What's the story here? Does that capacity 16 refer to the number of a/c that can be launched from L.I or what?

The capacity is the optimal number of aircraft that can be operated from the carrier.  The carrier can still perform ops if they are slightly above that number, but there will be some drop in efficiency since the deck crew has to keep pushing the extra planes out of the way.

I believe a carrier can have on board up to 150% of its capacity number, but if they are above a few percent more than the capacity of the ship, the planes will only be able to fly off and transfer somewhere else.  They will not be able to operate aircraft (no landings, no combat missions).

Plane ferries are very handy for moving fighters and single engine bombers to the front lines quickly as you did with the P-40s.  (They will carry P-38s too.)

OldCoot-IIRC, a cv-cve-cvl can fly missions with up to 115% of capicity. Example- Essex has a rated capacity of 90 aircraft. 90x115=103.5, round down to 103. If you look at ship's capicity on right hand side , you'll see :capicity 90: 103. The 103 will be in an orange color. If she goes over the 103, say to 110, the 110 will be in red.

Hope this helps.
