A use of stimulus money that didn't make the headlines

Post by Gil R. »

I got the following from this Civil War blog: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/house-divided/

"Stimulus Plan Helps Civil War Battlefields

The National Park Service will receive $750 million from the Department of the Interior as part of President Obama's recovery plan. Funds are to be used to restore national parks, preserve history and create jobs, according to an announcement Wednesday.

Civil War battlefields are among the recipients, including Antietam, Md., Stones River in Tennessee, and Fort Donelson, Tenn., which will receive funds to preserve headstones. Gettysburg will be able to rehabilitate the Daniel Klingle House. At Harpers Ferry, federal funds will be used to repair slate roofs on four historic buildings."

Having been to several battlefields, I can attest that many of the headstones are so weathered that they're impossible to read. So if money is being thrown around, I'm glad that some is being thrown at this problem.

I think that the "stimulus" pkg is a joke that will forever bury us in debt and high taxes but I do believe that a civilized nation must preserve it's heritage rain or shine.

We're not supposed to discuss politics on the Matrix forum. Otherwise, I might have written something similar.[;)]

Actually with the skrinking of great battle sites this is a welcome relief. I think the stimulus was better spent on that then the banks. But what the who

More than politics this is economics, Gil. As the money is fake so is the package... and so is the debt and the crisis.[8D]

I think i'll keep my remarks about if the money would be effective to myself but I'm glad that some of all that money goes to a worthy cause.

Glad Harper's Ferry got some of the money. That place was getting old...
