One of the best first person shooters (FPS) I've ever played was "System Shock 2." It came out same year as Doom II, and was therefore eclipsed in popularity, but many reviews say it was far ahead of its time.

I personally find the entire concept of a "favourite game besides WitP" completely ludicrous... There is NO other game than WitP...[:D]

Semi-funny story alert!! (or not)

When the first Panzer General came out, a friend and I were reading a review on it in a magazine. We were commenting on how it didn't look like a very fun game and I told him that I didn't think I would like it at all and probably wouldn't buy it. Well, my wife was standing right there when I made the comment and what I didn't know was that my wife had already bought it for me for Christmas. Apparently, after my comment, she tried to get her money back and/or trade it for another game, but she was unable to.

Come Christmas time, she gives me the game and makes some comment like "Sorry, I picked the wrong game." Well, I decided to give it a try. As it turned out, I found the game to be really fun and it became one of my all time favorite game.

How about the Great Naval Battles of WWII Games?  They ROCKED!  The surface combat model was sooooo superior to WitP.  I loved it.

I think your referring to System Shock ... the original System Shock. Shock 2 came out in 1999 and was one of the best shooters i ever played. creeped the hell out of me! Original SS slipped totally under my radar as did the original Fallout despite me being a Baldur's Gate fan. I managed to get a copy of the former via Ebay a number of years ago. It WAS ahead of it's time compared to a simple shooter like Doom II. So ahead that it took my "then" advanced Pentium IV running Win98 to make it run totally smoothly. Unfortunately i havn't been able to replay it since that machine had it's motherboard updated. For some reason Win98 can't load up expanded memory...keep getting page size alerts and the game requires it to beat the 640k DOS thing. [:(]

Charbroiled,

The original Panzer General STILL IS A GREAT GAME.  PG runs on our original computer (yes, a 386 DX 25 converted to a 486 DX2 50 that still runs just fine).  Besides PG, we have all the classic DOS games, including Railroad Tycoon and Railroad Tycoon Deluxe, Civilization, Masters of Orion, Colonization, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Harpoon, Sim City, Sim Earth, SimAnt, Caesar II, Civil War Generals, etc., etc.  We used to call our original computer the "game machine" because it had so many on it (and on a partitioned 1.3MB hard drive at that!).

You're right Nik, I'm conflating the two. SS 1 came out at the time of Doom. I own it, but have never even tried to get it to run on any of my machines, which are all Win XP.

System Shock 2 I played a couple years ago in Emulator mode or something like that on a Win XP machine. Fantastic game, and definitely ahead of its time.

I've not been able to get it to run on XP either. Get as far as the intro....without sound then it goes back to desktop. I need to try to fix the Win98 issue. There's some solutions posted on the Net regarding setting Expanded memory but so far the changes i've made in my Config.sys file arn't working. Would love to play it again.

If you liked SS2, you'd like Undying too. Ever play it?

Never played Undying.

IIRC, I did get SS2 to work on XP (though it might have been Win 2000).

I don't even know why I'm reading this thread however; its like the guy who knows he MUST join the monastery window shopping at the brothel. I absolutely MUST constrain my gameplaying if I gonna get tenure! [:-]

Worth picking up. Runs on XP. I had to get it as part of a "horror pack" which includes the first two "Dracula first person RPG's"

here's a link with info on it. Its based on the Unreal Tournament game engine. Very well rendered. Even today the graphics still look credible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Barker's_Undying

SS2 runs on Xp no problem. Getting back to the mentioned Bioshock, i've read that the core group that was Irrational games was responsbile for that piece and it's considered the true successor to SS2. It certainly was the most interesting shooter i've played in years.....better than Fallout 3 with a great and unique setting and storyline to go with it. I stil hope that someday there'll be a SS3
