Japansese tanks (if you can call them that) tryin' out the new high-occupancy diamond lanes.
Occasionally, and randomly, problems and solutions collide. The probability of these collisions is inversely related to the number of committees working on the solutions. -- Me.

Japanese responding to an Allied call to "Turn in your scrap metal". Reliable witnesses state that for every five of these pieces of mobile junk turned in, a real tank can be produced....[:D][:D]

These pieces of "mobile junk" defeated the Chinese, the Brits in Malaya en Singapore, the Dutch in the DEI and the US in the Philippines.
You can laugh all you want, but up until the middle of the war the Allies would have been gratefull to have this "mobile junk" available in the Asian and Western pacific theaters...

But those guns are just so . . . so . . . so, small!
Don't the biggest guns always get the girls? [:D]
But seriously Willie, I believe you. Do you know of any articles, websites or books or anything that focus on the role of the light tank in Pacific War? That would be cool to check out.

That says rather less about the tankettes than it does about the quality of equipment opposing them. Trash, like nearly all Jap ground force equipment.

Sounds like they had both weaknesses and strengths, depending on context. Obviously on the plains of Russia, nearly useless. Also perhaps on a mostly flat barren atoll = useless? But in a jungle-infested, hilly, backwoods context with narrow windy roads lots of small bridges, etc., I could see these being fairly effective.

You'd be quite incorrect. The Jap tankettes had pretty poor suspension, and not enough mass to "push through" the terrain the way a real tank could. They were also undercrewed, and suffered from the same lack of vision that all tanks do. Thus, piss-poor everywhere.

No.., they didn't. Japanese INFANTRY won those campaigns. These mobile junkpiles were just along for the ride, and to be filmed in newsreels so the rest of the world could see that the Empire had "tanks" like everyone else.
