What a waste of 1000lbers [:(]
Those SBD pilots should have realised the futility of targeting the Yamato after the first dozen non-penetrating hits and gone for the CAs instead [;)]

FAO John - would you please let us know when Musashi goes on her 1st combat mission so we can greet her in the same fashion [:D]

Not a waste--near misses were very effective.

Some of the hits were reported as belt armour non-penetrating hits so they could be interpretted as near misses. HOWEVER the majority were deck armour non penetrating hits with added nessages of destroyed 6.1 inch turret / destroyed 25mm mount / turret hit / crew casualties etc.
Still a waste......

In my game Yamato went down after five torpedo hits and in the process received a Critical Hit, Magazine explosion, I believe. I counted each hit but never expected her to sink. But, after checking the sunk ships list a few days later they she was with the cause, "hit by 500lb bomb". She was hit by a few of those but nothing significant. if a bb in WITP is hit by five torpedoes then I expect EVERY bb sunk in the game... I guess 5 torps would also be some quite bad damage to survive in real life also... might not sink within 10 minutes but what about being far away from your next port...

Non-capital ships lacked underwater protection for their magazines, so any torpedo hit that would detonate a magazine let in enough water to prevent the explosion. Capital ships however were vulnerable. There were three other kinds of critical hits caused by torpedoes--fire (in carriers and tankers), capsizing and breaking the keel. Torpedoes could start uncontrollable fires in carriers and tankers, but most other classes were essentially immune. Capsizing often reflected design errors--RN and IJN cruisers and RN carriers were especially vulnerable to hits on their engine spaces. The keel could be broken by an underwater attack, especially if the explosion occurred some distance below the keel.

"For a number to make sense in the game, someone has to calibrate it and program code. There are too many significant numbers that behave non-linearly to expect that. It's just a game. Enjoy it." herwin@btinternet.com
