a question and a thanks

Post by Asqerix »

Hi everybody,
after years of playing it finally occurred to me that I never understood the meaning of these small stars (***) in the ASW combat screen, for example : Near miss damages sub***, near miss rattles sub*. Do these denote the amount of depth charges or the severity of the hit?
Oh, and a big thanks to all you fellows at the DC summit yesterday, i had a great time.[:D]

Hmm, inquiring minds want to know.

I know in PacWar each * denoted 0%-25% damage caused, so *** meant 50%-75% damage. Whether that's a holdover from PacWar is a mystery though. It could simply mean the severity of the hit or something.

the only reason why there are ** then *** then **** is to make you notice that there were DCs dropped. Otherwise all you would see is always the same message and you wouldn´t notice that something happened. Near miss rattles * (first time), near miss rattles ** (second time), near miss rattles *** (third time), near miss damages sub * . DD Shimakaze fires 4 depth charges, near miss rattles * (first time)... etc.

near miss rattles never does any damage, it´s just chrome.

Might be wrong, but IIRC some of those sub near-misses might increase the chance to detect, (to simulate oil in the water?).

As the man said: it's chrome... it might in real life, but it doesn't in WITP (from what was said about such things when they changed the ASW routine.)
