Cannot play game.

Post by sapper_astro »

After redownloading the game 4 times now, just in case it was a corrupted download, I am afraid I have a major problem.

The game installs, starts to run and then...just as it hits the splash screen with the ticking sound, I instead get a second of this sound, a green screen, and then a full reboot of the computer. This happens the same way every time I have tried.

I have:

Redownloaded, fully deleting every bit of the game each time, shut down all programs except the necessary ones when installing and running, no luck at all.

It is only this game. Every other game I own runs fine, including CC Cross of Iron. I am at my wits end, and if this dilemma cannot be fixed, would like a refund. Please advise me on what steps I should take, within reason (noting that every other game works on my system, including the mentioned Cross of Iron, with no problems whatsoever).

I have; Windows XP service pack 2, AMD 3400+, 2.5 GB ram, Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT, Soundblaster Live. If there is anything else that is needed, let me know.

Very bizarre, we'll see if we can figure this out. Haven't heard of anything like this before, normally a system reboot is very indicative of a hardware/driver issue. Have you tried COI lately? Have you considered updating your video/audio drivers and DirectX to make sure nothing's gotten corrupted there?

Hello Eric,

Just loaded up Cross of Iron and played a map. Perfect in every way.

I am a bit loathe to update any drivers, mainly due to the fact that they work perfectly with umpteen games that I have, including the 10 odd Matrix games I own. If I put drivers that are too new on this videocard, then it will start making problems.

Perhaps it has something to do with the first splash screen. Is there any way to disable the splash screens? I note that COI does not have any apart from the oldschool one that was on the original.

Edit, just tried Conquest of the Aegean, knowing it has the same ticking Matrix splash screen. Again, works perfectly.

When you say splash screen do you mean the videos or the static artwork.  I'd assume you're talking about the videos.  If so you can turn off videos by holding down the ctrl immediately after launching the game.  The options menu will come up and you can go to the "general" tab. There you can uncheck the "enable videos" option.  That should allow you to bypass the videos and eliminate that or confirm that as your issue.  If you're able to play the game with the videos off it's likely a driver issue but that's a hunch.

Please let us know if that works.  Thanks.

Going to give that a go now. Lets hope there isn't a reboot.

Ok, it is working. I turned off the videos, and everything seems to be fine now.

I cannot understand it though, the (I assume) same video in all my other Matrix games works fine, but this one seems to cause a system reboot. I will keep it as is, and see how the game itself plays, but as every other game i own plays well, I do not want to mess about with my drivers, etc, and possibly cause problems with other games.

Thank you for the help and the suggestion of using the CTRL button. Much appreciated for the speedy responses from both of you.

Edit: I won't miss other nice vids other than the Matrix splash video, will I? It isn't the end of the world, but if there is some nice campaign footage, or other important videos, I would like to know now.

Navigate to the TLD \Videos folder and you should be able to play them with your media player without any problem.

It's most certainly a driver issue of some sort.  If you don't mind having the videos off that might be the best solution knowing you don't want to update your drivers for fear of messing up something else.  As Drill says if you want to view the videos for the sake of knowing what they look like you can play them using media player.  Glad we were able to figure it out SA.

Thanks again for the replies. The videos are quite nice actually.

Just for interests sake, which drivers in particular would you think are the culprit?

Hmmm that's a good question.  As Erik suggested it's likely related to video or audio drivers.

I have a similar problem with audio as I have the same soundcard the computer came with and that is 7 years old.  So it's ancient.  Many new games audio are very choppy for me.  Have put my money into upgrading other stuff.

HI Guys,

This has been a problem with almost all versions of CC since CC2, there are several workarounds, but if you have it working, I suggest, leave things alone and enjoy ;)
