Who would be in charge?

Post by terje439 »

Had a situation pop up in my ongoing pbem game. I had two Divs stacked together, with an army under Grant in the next province. My opponent attacks my divs with an army, so the divs calls in some help from Grant who arrives to join the battle.
Now I would have expected Grant to take control over the battle as he was the only 4star present, and that his corps commander Meade would get some control as well, but only the two initial 2star commanders were present at the battle.

WAD or BUG?

Hmm kinda like Lee not taking over the command of the battle from Heth at Gettysburg but ok...

Well, perhaps think of it like Bull Run, where the more senior Johnston was happy to let Beauregard keep running the battle while he himself remained closer to Manassas Junction steering troops towards the battle.

Although its WAD it doesn't seem terribly realistic - especially when you have a situation like Terje describes where an army is coming to the rescue of a much smaller force. Actually I can't recall what impact if any the reinforcing leaders have on rallying of their units - which would make a big impact for a top class commander like Grant. There is a good case for allowing an arriving senior general or generals to make some contribution to the tactical modifier having regard to the proportion of the overall force represented by the reinforcements (or maybe those that start outside the rout zone) and influenced also perhaps by how high a rating they have compared to the lead generals already present.

One for the wishlist perhaps.

Sure. We're not averse to changing this in a future patch.

On the other side, I could always argue that Grant was drunk at the time, my opponent had the same thing with J.E.Johnston, what should he claim happened [;)]
