Is a multi-player PBEM playable yet?

Post by Michael T »

Gave on on this game about 8 months ago. So back again to see how things have progressed. A simple question. If I start a PBEM game with 4 humans and 3 AI players can we play a game out to its completion without encountering some game ending bug? Or do we need to wait a while yet. Our group gave up on this game after about 4 or 5 restarts. The game has promise but we don't want to start again untill we can finish a game.
Thank you.

4 real world friends who all live in the same time zone, with telephones, who won't cheat each other and aren't worried about the number of file exchanges or the weakness of AI. But they aren’t software engineers. Can these people play the game out? Perhaps we should wait for patch 1.06 to go official, will that make it possible? Thank you

Posted by Trax back in January 2009:
Our four player group has compleated EiANW with a French victory in December of 1812. Finish order with percentage; France 101, Spain 89, G.B. 88, Turkey 83, Russia 60, Austria 51, Prussia 38. Ai Spain and Turkey did nothing to deserve their fininshing positions!

In our game France won two unconditional peace treaties from both Austria and Prussia. GB won a conditional peace from the Turks. Russia was invaded twice by France but was never defeated. Our game had human players for France, GB, Austria and Russia. After about 1806 we found it preferable to let the Austrian player also control Prussia.

We started our game about the first of February 2008 and finished mid January 2009. There was about 5 game months of do-overs with the early problems in the game.

Progress has been steady for quite a while now. This adds up to about 1700 turns in 350 days an average of 5 player turns per day. We did have several weeks of no play so the average of 5 turns is misleading. On a good evening we often could get through two phases of a game month. Our group is going to shuffle countries and start again.

This was since initial release, with the early problems, and this group still played and completed a game. It's doable. v1.06 will be better. Once the editor issues are fixed, you could even create and start a custom campaign closer to EiA if you want. [:)]

PLEASE read the other thread "Is This Game Playable?" because this question is a matter of opinion.

For me personally, I have been in several games and ALL of them have had MAJOR GAME STOPPING BUGS at one point or another.

That sounds promising pzgndr, thanks [:)]

I hear your frustration NeverMan. I have been there. [:(]

I think it best to wait for the official 1.06 and try again with renewed hope.

Thank you for your replies.

I must admit that the PBEM system has been anything but smooth but I hope to fix a lot of this in 1.06!

Marshall, I hope you are not teasing with this statement. There are a lot of us wanting a better PBEM system. I almost dare not ask what you kind of fix you [&o]have in mind.

I did find one major problem with the engine reading battles files and teleporting corps around alot. I believe this was the root of many evils. I hope to see this help smooth email games.
