Only the A6M2s can reach Eniwetok from Ponape so I'm quite happy to cheaply attrit them at this stage. Once the A6M2s are gone my CVs can roam freely - absent intervention from the IJN CVs which I expect to be 3 to 4 days out ( perhaps one day more if he stops and re-organises his fighter groups by upgrading them to Ki-44 IIIs... which he most definitely should do. ).

Only the A6M2s can reach Eniwetok from Ponape so I'm quite happy to cheaply attrit them at this stage. Once the A6M2s are gone my CVs can roam freely - absent intervention from the IJN CVs which I expect to be 3 to 4 days out ( perhaps one day more if he stops and re-organises his fighter groups by upgrading them to Ki-44 IIIs... which he most definitely should do. ).

Excellent. The two closest islands are mien ( and great training bases for my inexperienced P-40E squadrons coming in by AK from CONUSA). Kwajalein should follow in 4 or 5 days and Eniwetok is also doomed. Only Ponape remains to be taken quickly --- and I have a US Infantry Division ( not combat loaded ) on the way there.
So far so good, my losses are well within parameters.

RE: We are here to stay !!!
California: I haven't bothered checking. She'll either sink or not before I capture Kwajalein. If she sinks then that's that, if she doesn't then I'll dock her and repair her.
As you've probably realised by now I'm not very impressed with BBs as major force projectors during this time period.
As to the losses: Well, I think you've formed quite an incorrect impression of my attitude to losses. It seems to me that you have drawn the impression that I don't care about casualties... which couldn't be farther from the truth.
I do care about casualties and I always look to achieve my goals at the lowest overall level of casualties possible --- it just so happens that the lowest level of casualties is usually incurred in lightning-quick campaigns which feature a massive RATE of casualties. I don't think you are differentiating between the rate of casualties and the level of casualties and thus you are arriving at entirely erroneous conclusions.
E.g. Go to another AAR here and find out how long it takes most Allied COs to take the Marshalls when they are penned back to just Hawaii. Most will take Palmyra and Wake first and then manoeuvre slowly against the Marshalls.
Add up ALL of the time it takes them to take Palmyra, Wake and then ALL of the Marshall islands. Add up ALL of the ship, troop and plane casualties that are incurred in those 3 major operations.
Now, look at the Marshall campaign...
Cost in planes: 30 SBDs, about 20 fighters and 10 four-engined bombers.
Cost in terms of troops: Well, the landing casualties from landing at atolls. That's about it.
Cost in terms of ships. So far 1 AK has sunk, 1 BB is a bit damaged, 3 CAs are mildly damaged ( 20 to 30 sys damage ) and about 20 APs and AKs will require long periods in dock being repaired. In addition a few MSWs, PCs and AVDs have taken a pounding from CD units.
But, the losses incurred are actually tiny --- especially when compared with the gains and the speed of those gains.
So, Harlock, I think you need to re-evaluate the equation here. Actually these operations are very much being done on the cheap. The only costly operation I had was the initial landing in Burma and that was massively necessary as it took the initiative from the Japanese and broke their air force ( which, at the time, was massively superior to mine ).
Even still I'm facing an IJN which has roughly double the CVs I have and an IJN which has at least as many main combatants as I have. By any objective measure I'm advancing against a superior force with interior lines and actually suffering very few losses in doing so ( e.g. The Aleutians and Sakhalin were won cheaply once you take into account that the first, costly, landing was only the first phase of that operation... Once that was done the other stages were very cheap --- principally because I'd worn the IJN out in that first stage.
Same with Burma... It set the stage for the land invasion of Thailand etc and then when I went for Java it cost me two old AKs. That's it and that's pretty damned cheap. In retaking Java I've destroyed 3 full IJA divisions and I only ever deployed 2 Allied divisions.
So, respectfully, I think your assessment is wrong.

You have some valid points there. Barring a truly incompetent Japanese commander, there is no way to play the game without considerable casualties on the Allied side. (Defeat, of course, tends to cause even more casualties than winning.)
That being said, you are on the record as stating "Stalin has nothing on me when it comes to insensitivity to casualties". You might also want to check the last AAR where you played the Allied side. I seem to remember an invasion where you lost a full third of your transports -- and said it was about what you'd estimated.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: We are here to stay !!!
Harlock,
Yes, I'm insensitive to casualties --- WHEN those casualties are justified by the gains won.... I'm highly sensitive to casualties incurred to no gain ( which is why I run so few subsidiary operations ).
As to the other game in which I lost so many transports... Yes, I did lose that many but in return I got several hundred thousand troops ashore in Java, retake it all except Soerabja ( IIRC ) and had several hundred fighters and bombers based on that island. I even sank a Japanese CV which prowled a little too closely IIRC.
In any case the point is that losing 100 APs and AKs in a short space of time in early 1942 in order to retake the most strategically vital island on the map in terms of preventing Japan from surviving past mid-43 would cut 2 years off the war. Even the most conservative Allied commander is going to lose a lot more than 100 ships in those two years.
So, you need to take the context into account. Losses were high but the Japanese were stopped cold and all of their attention was focussed in one place where I was happy to attrit them into nothingness whilst denying them their vital OIL supplies. Win/ Win.

Win/ Win.
To be fair, there's varying definitions of "sensitive to casualties".
The typical "western" definition is: I'm not going to send a division of troops up a hill and expect to take 80% casualties, even if, in doing so, I can shave a year off the war. The social compact in western armies is such that the individual soldier doesn't expect to be put in positions where he's expendable, even if there's some massive strategic benefit to be gained.
There's a continuum of course, in WW II for example, the US was less casualty sensitive than the UK, partly based on culture, partly based on having a larger pool of military age men, but its generally a truism that western armies will not engage in "high casualty, high reward" type operations.
Russian doctrine, on the other hand, is more inclined to view the overall strategic picture and do a bit of math that says, "I'll sacrifice this division over here to shave a year off the war and in doing so save 12 divisions worth of attritional casualties".
RE: We are here to stay !!!
Pat,
An excellent precis of the situation. I think you're spot on. I'm very much of the Soviet style of thinking ( and doctrine ) in which every level of combat ( personal, tactical, operational, strategic and national policy objective ) is subordinated to the needs of the level above it. Need something done operationally? Well, in that case even if it isn't conducive to personal or tactical situations it must be made happen.
Harlock is, I think, on further reflection, coming at this from a very Western perspective... which is very much the wrong way to approach my planning considerations.
Thanks for the contribution Pat, it really summarised things and crystalised them well.

John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

He'll hit |Eniwetok with Ki-264s tomorrow as he'll want it closed if we're having a CV battle near there in a day or two's time... Consequently I'll put 70+ fighters there and kill quite a few Ki-264s.
So far so good. When I move on Ponape he'll have to react and when he does we'll have our fleet confrontation. How will it go? Well it all depends on the number of Ki-44 IIIs he has. I'm going to try to hang outside of Ki-44 III escort range but what that means is that while I should do a number on his attack groups he should be able to butched my own strike groups in return. So, in short, I expect my Dauntlesses and Wildcats to be almost wiped out if they are facing Ki-44 IIIs.
I doubt he has replaced all of his CV planes with Ki-44 IIIs though as he has put a lot of effort into converting land-based groups so far... So, It'll be bloody but I'm confident of ending up ahead. If he could bring all his CVs to bear I'd be doomed but I would imagine he has no more than 4 out of 8 CVs and another 4 or 5 CVLs/CVEs instead of a maximum of about 10.

Kwajalein should fall tomorrow which will give me a major base for my four-engined bombers and a big port for my ship repairs. ALl in all things are going nicely.

Does that mean the Japanese engineers managed to reduce the forts from 3 to 0 in a single turn?

RE: We are here to stay !!!
I can't agree. There are numerous counterexamples -- I especially recommend you look at the charge of the 1st Minnesota on the second day of Gettysburg. But perhaps an even better example is Kennesaw Mountain. Sherman knew he would take heavy losses, but he figured that a breakthrough would be worth it. The fortunes of war (and the adoption of rifles rather than smoothbores) decreed there would be no breakthrough.
And speaking of the fortunes of war, does Nemo have a "plan B" if the upcoming carrier battle doesn't go his way?
In contradiction to Nemo's later post, I think the American military has adopted an "Eastern" approach based much on Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". The indirect rather than the direct approach is preferred -- when possible. Rather than hit the enemy square on, you look for a key point which will unhinge his defensive position. When such an opportunity can't be found, the Pentagon is ready, willing, and able to throw its men into the meatgrinder.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: We are here to stay !!!
Harlock,
Yeah, it looks like they reduced the forts by 3 levels prior to the attack and that helped it be taken rather easily.
I think the AMerican military is trying to get into a more manoeuvrist mindset - with the USMC leading the way in this - but for the majority of the 20th Century the American army was resolutely attritionist.
Also prior to Petraeus much of the Iraq strategy was based on a misappreciation that "if we can kill them fast enough we'll win"... which is fine in theory but in practice necessitates killing one's opponents in this sort of struggle at an unfeasibly fast rate.
Harlock,
Sure I have a plan B BUT I think it would be more accurate to say that I have a Plan B to cover the situation IF there is a carrier battle. I'm ok with there being a bttle if that's necessary to take Ponape but if I can take Ponape without a CV battle then that's even better. Obviously though that's not what I wanted to communicate to Damian directly ( or indirectly through people raising issues mentioned here in his AAR and getting him to think about why I was telling him I wanted a CV on CV battle ).
No, at the end of January 1943 I will be able to take him on head to head on an even level ( since I'll have some Corsairs and quite a few Hellcats on my CVs ) but right now the Ki-44 IIIs tilt the balance more in his favour than I'd like.

RE: We are here to stay !!!
Michael,
I get Hellcats and 50 CV-based Corsairs a month in January 1943. Unfortunately Damian got Ki-44 IIIs 4 months early so by the time I get any of those on my CVs he'll have 600+ Tojo IIIs waiting for them.
Still, that's ok, slowing me down a bit will keep things interesting in the longer run... plus, having to switch axes again will make for more challenge - and that's the whole point of playing.

RE: We are here to stay !!!
Over the past 3 days I've danced around Damian's forces and tried to have my Wildcats face his Ki-44 IIIs to get a sense of the disparity. So far that has been largely unsuccessful but previous testing shows that the Ki-44 IIIs could get at least a 6 to 1 exchange rate with the F4F4s. As a result I'm going to run my CVs as a defensive fleet for the moment and try to pick up a relatively out of the way base which gets me much of what going into the jaws of the dragon at Truk would.
I'm also prepping a couple of major paraborne invasions of islands in the main Japanese defensive line.
In China I am dumbfounded that Damian is still sitting in Canton... All I have to do is march around the city by land and I can move my troops and take all the coastal bases he thinks his stand ar Canton defends... I've also formed the first new Allied fighter group for about 6 months. This group ( about 200 fighters ) is going to try to prevent Japanese on-map training.
I'm also trying to draw fighters away from the Pacific and so I'm about to start hitting HI in China in a serious way again.
I've also finally got enough air support in the Pacific and in Oz to be able to actually fully utilise the airbases I've got. This is great as it is going to allow me to really crucify the Japanese with even more concentrated bombing raids.
In other news: Java has fallen and I've taken the first base ( on the same day as Soerabaja fell ) on Southern Borneo.

RE: We are here to stay !!!
In other news: Java has fallen and I've taken the first base ( on the same day as Soerabaja fell ) on Southern Borneo.
And we've really got trouble, my friends, trouble with a capital "T" that rhymes with "P" that stands for -- No Oil.[:D]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: We are here to stay !!!
He would have to march back to Shanghai by trails and that could take months for it to happen. It would be a slowly weakening guerilla force or stay in Canton as a group of POWs. I've read enough of your AARs to know that you will not get into a slug fest when you can manuever around it (which you are probably already doing). [;)]

Aye, I am... It'll be slow but in about 15 days I should have him cut off again and can begin marching into the coastal hexes...
In addition I'm also doing another encirclement in the Soviet Union which should make things interesting there too
. He hasn't spotted that one so *shush*

Well, that's that settled then.

RE: We are here to stay !!!
Michael,
If were him I would retreat from Canton and Hong Kong and just slowly pull back through the coastal bases, evacuating each one as the Chinese brought excessive force to bear. What this would do is buy lots of time and allow me to accumulate PPs which could be used to "buy out" those formations for allocation elsewhere. The Shanghai and Changsha fronts are quite stable and don't require any majoring bolstering so these forces would be available for deployment to Formosa and the Phillipines. By protecting Formosa he prevents a seaborne invasion along the Shanghai axis ( which is a subsidiary plan I will put into action if the situation presents itself ---- I don't expect it to but it is wise to plan for all eventualities ) and by bolstering the Phillipines he prevents me from taking it on the cheap.
In any case he seems determined to stay and "fight" albeit that about a month ago I prepared for such an eventuality by running bombing raids on the HI and resources in Hong Kong such that he CANNOT survive on the supplies produced in the pocket, he must bring in supplies by ship to maintain his force and I'm prepared to make such an effort too costly to countenance.
Also there's an opportunity cost to sticking in Canton. By acceding to the trapping of 1500+ AV there he doesn't have those troops available to bolster the Phillipines and Formosa... So if he wants to protect those bases he must find troops from his reserves to do so... and those reserves can then not be sent to the Palau/Saipan axis of islands --- which is the new front line. In addition this is going to become a more pressing concern for him when I outflank his forces in the Soviet Union trapping an additional 2,800 AV behind my lines and slowly allowing the attrition from lack of supply to attrit and exhaust them.
In other news my F4F4 Wildcat situation is critical. I have not been able to replenish my USN fighter groups and most of my USMC fighter groups are down to 1 or 2 planes. Accordingly I'm manoeuvring aggressively but declining battle as that keeps the Japanese focussed on this front but prevents them from crushing my CVs ( as they could if they ever caught me ) while I'm bringing the USAAF fighter groups ( I have a convoy carrying about 140 USAAF fighters to Kwajalein within the week. These guys only have 40 Exp but with a week or two of training I expect them to be able to hold their own.) in to carry the load and allow my USN and USMC fighter groups to be withdrawn and rebuilt.
Still, lack of CVs is no reason not to continue attacking so preparations for the next series of attacks is already underway. Since the lack of CV fighters precludes an attack into the teeth of the enemy CVs and land-based strength in the region ( Truk ) I am going to dip southward, take Rabaul and then a small string of bases along the New Guinean coast. That will have the end result of linking the US and Australians up with eachother. Once that's done I can pick my axis - Phillipines, Palau or Saipan.
Right now Damian is enjoying a tactical superiority due to the Ki-44 III. My fighters just can't stand up to it - although the Corsairs and Hellcats I get from 1st January 43 can... and will. He is also enjoying the Ki-264s ability to fly through even my heaviest CAP ( 100+ fighters ) and deliver a crushing blow to my airfields. However he hasn't combined those two planes in order to win anything of strategic value. He keeps tooling around destroying airframes and guarding routes of advance when 2 days of aggressiveness coupled with a willingness to close to knife-fighting range could see him close Kwajalein and destroy my CVs as they stand and fight in defence of that which must be defended. So, tactically successful and even operationally useful but strategically he isn't using this 1 month window of opportunity to achieve anything decisive. This is a major error IMO - especially as some of my strategic bombing has reduced the ability of his factories to produce more than about 90 Ki-264s per month ( I think he has about 540 Mansyu engines produced per month --- down from over 700 prior to my bombing campaign ).

Well, that's that settled then.

RE: We are here to stay !!!
Here you can see my plan to extend beyond the Marshalls. I plan to dodge Truk, take Rabaul and then extend northward along the New Guinean coast and the Admiralty Islands. This will allow me to bring the Ozzies in along the axis of the American advance and create an army more than strong enough to advance up the Palau chain AND, simultaneously, land several thousand AV in the southern Phillipines.
The aim will be to draw the IJNAF and IJAAF into close contact along both of these axes and slowly destroy them beyond the point of repair. Since Damian seems to view the Phillipines as essential I feel that I ought to be able to use an invasion there to draw his aerial and ground reserves in and once they are drawn in I can chew them up, spit them out and move onto the island chains around the Home Islands before he can rebuild these reserves.
This will set the conditions necessary for the invasion of the Home Islands proper before the end of 1943 which ought to be interesting and quite a challenge --- which is what makes it worth doing
