My uncle was stationed in the PI (Air Force). He loved it. They had servants..well a maid at least. His older kids and wife hated it. [:)]

as for San Jose...yes that is on Mindoro. On the M&M Enterprises map, San Marcelino is on Luzon..I think they actually got this right. Like I said, I think that base is intended to represent Subic Bay and environs. I haven't invaded there yet. There are the small matters of Mutsu and Kongo. [:)]

On the night of the 17/18th, the IJN gives me a small scale spanking at Jesselton. Also the 6th Cav boys on Mindoro have trouble with the Japanese lighthouse keeper and his Akita....so they call off their attack. [:@] Tha means no airfield to cover a landing on Luzon yet. Even worse, Mutsu and Kongo show up off Luzon.

I order a retreat back toward Jolo because of the absence of planned air cover and because PoW is likely outgunned and her destroyer escort is lacking. I hope the Jap carriers dont show up, Lord Admiral Tabpub will say "I told you so" [:)]

NOTE: Typo noted after printing. There are no "carriers" in the Jesselton bombardment group. The printer has been orderd to inkboard himself 83 times (and no cheating either).

The able-bodied men of 23rd Recce Coy, 6th Aus. Cavalry Brigade, surround a beautiful, whitewashed, old Spanish era lighthouse. An Imperial Japanese Navy battle ensign flies at the top of the lighthouse. The company, shorn of its vehicles and configured as an infantry unit for this mission, has been given the job of taking the airfield and small harbor in a coup de main as part of a big attack on Luzon. The coup part isn't working so well right now. The only Japanese resistance on the island is the lighthouse keeper, who has an ample supply of Emperor brand kool-aide.


Coy CO: <calls out to lighthouse> Look, you are surrounded. Your situation is hopeless. You had best surrender.

Lighthouse keeper: YOU DIE GI!

Coy CO: Look, we aren't GI's. We are in the employ of the King.

Lighthouse keeper: YOU DIE GI! ALL DIE NOW!

Coy CO: Look, if there is any dieing to do, it will be on your side, I'm afraid.

Lighthouse keeper: YOU DIE GI! BANZAI!

Coy CO: <turns to sargeant> I sense this may be futile.

Sargeant: It would seem so, sir.

Coy CO: What have we in the way of heavy weapons? Any anti-tank guns?

Sargeant: No sir. We were ordered to travel light. I think it was the whole coup de main thing.

Coy CO: Heavy machine gun?

Sargeant: No sir.

Coy CO: Mortars?

Sargeant: We had one sir.

Sargeant: Yes sir. Past tense, sir.

Sargeant: Well sir, it seems it was lost in a craps game aboard Stringham.

Coy CO: Bloody Hell! Didn't I issue specific orders prohibiting gambling?

Sargeant: Yes sir. I believe you did.

Coy CO: Bloody Hell. Those damned Americans. What would a sailor want with a mortar anyway?

Sargeant: Well, perhaps it could be traded...

Coy CO: Never mind, Sargeant, it was more a rhetorical question.

Sargeant: Oh, fantastic sir. Am I to be pro or con?

Coy CO: What? Look, let's say we have the boys just go in there and get the stubborn bastard.

Sargeant: Yes sir <he signals to 3 soldiers to enter and capture the keepr. They move quickly, the lead soldier kicking in the ground-level door with one kick. They all enter qucikly guns drawn. There is a horrific, almost lupine, growling and several human screams followed by a quick exit. All 3 have torn uniforms>

Lead Soldier: It's a white dog sir..big and fluffy. That dog is dynamite.

Coy CO: Hmmm...well Sargeant, looks like we are up against Akita SNLF....

June 19:

As 23 Recce Coy has not taken San Jose..and because there were several jap BB's off Luzon, I called a retreat from the Northern Sulu Sea. A group of 30 Bettys and Jacks went after the Luzon landing group which had retreated to a standoff position near Jolo. They were torn up by the CAP of P-38's. A few Bettys penetrated the CAP but scored no hits. The Jap BB's are still WNW of Bataan heading in a Northwesterly direction.

A raid of LB-30's from Jolo on Manila was mildy effective, destroying a few Bettys on the ground but not seriously damaging the airfield.

Stringham and Kane are making another run up to San Jose to drop another coy or so. Just in case, they brought a couple of T-bone steaks for the Akita and a small AT gun for the keeper.

Aus. 9th ID has been rtrieved from Amboina and will R&R in Darwin. US 32nd ID is ready to go and will be the main follow on force for Luzon.

Returning the Solomons to their rightful owners. [;)] I am running recon flights from Hollandia over Finschafen and Lae and Kavieng to make the Japs think the western pincer is about to spring....it isn't as my effort is directed toward Luzon.


My twelve year old black lab died this weekend. It was hard on me but my 5 year old lab is now moping around the house, sniffing closed doors, looking out of windows and runs down the stairs in the morning and makes a few quick loops around..to no avail of course. She stopped eating too. It is pitiful. She is eating grass like crazy. Dogs do this when they are nauseated but do they do this when they are depressed or grieving? As an experiment, I gave her half a waffle (without anything on it). She inhaled it. [:)]


Speaking of me being manipulated by females, Stalker Girl has suggested I time the Viking Funeral Pyre ceremony with the expiration of her lease. This has a certain utilitarian logic to it but I can't help feeling I have a bull's eye painted on my forehead. [:)]

Something went awry on the plan for Stringham and Kane to race in under cover of darkness, drop off a couple of coys of 6th Cav at San Jose, then race back toward Jolo. It think it was the novelty of the "iceberg-like structures" in the Sulu Sea.

Those boys and girls are cute but, as official tootsie roll collector of the house (when the Mayan houskeeper is not there), I am bit hesitant.

The 5 year old is starting to eat again. I took here up up in the hills on some long walks to build up an energy deficit. It worked...I guess. She nearly took me knee out running from an amazing swarm of bees we ran into (she was stung in the mouth when she was a puppy..here jowels were like grapefruits [:)]). Thousands and thosuands of bees crawling all over each other in a big mass right by the trail. Fortunately I guess they were pacifists.

When we got done she ate a full can of wet food and I had TWO gin and tonics. [:)]

In other news, probing attacks begin at Cotobato today. We shall see what we are up against.

Bandou (on the Kra Peninsula) fell on the 18th. The 40,00 trapped Japs retreated into the hills. They still need to be taken out before an advance on Songkla.

The arriving Dutchmen of Barisan Regt., being airlifted from Cotobato, devour a delicious taco-like dish prepared by local women of San Jose...much to the amusement of the victors of the Battle of the San Jose Lighthouse.

The CAP over Jolo does its job. No attacks are made by Jap carrier aircraft. Cagayan proves to be garrisoned only by support troops. Aus. 7th ID will attack today. Several hundred men of 6th Cav are headed to Tacloban, which has a level 5 airfield.
