Any News On The A.I.

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Any News On The A.I.

Post by Missouri Rebel »

I've been looking for any word on the progress regarding WiF's AI. There has not been much said on it lately and I have to wonder how such a big task can be accomplished and tested in time for a July release? Correct me if I am wrong but, doesn't it take a long time to work out bugs and strengthen the AI?

I'm not trying to cast doubt as I have no idea. I'm just really curious about this aspect of WiF. One I am sure to use quite often.

We must act... against the Sioux, even to the extermination of men, WOMEN and CHILDREN.The more Indians we can kill this year, the less will have to be killed next year. They all have to be killed or be maintained as a species of paupers.- w.t. SHErMAN

I suspect all my games will be against the AI also, so I hope it's very challenging and informed.

I'm also really worried on this one too, and we haven't had an awfull lot of feedback on this one...

I have been badly burnt by Matrix with EiA before, a game that belonged to the same company, the Australian Design Group, they compleately ruined the game. Now, to be fair and honest, I must say that the monthly reports and the way the project has been handled is no where near what happened with EiA, and the computer version seems to be just like the original, and the pbem option is much more sound and well thought. The thing is that after EiA I can't trust Matrix any more.

My main aim is AI play, I am no master of WiF, but I can hold my own agaisnt experienced players, so I really hope that the AI will be able to hold out. If not, this game is of no interest to me, and I'm lead to believe that same thing will happen to others...

You should fill out the Simple Survey, which will only take a minute of your time.

That is my attempt to understand the concerns you expressed here (though in an overly simplified manner[8|]).

Foir this thread in general, ...

I do not want to get into a discussion on schedule beyond my monthly status reports. While I report status to Matrix weekly (and in some detail), and I believe that is the right thing to do, I begrudge the time reports take from other things.

I always hated management meetings during which valuable hours were lost that could have been spent on tasks directly reltated to finishing the project. When I was in management ( I co-managed a group of 32 AI programmers et al) we had a single 1 hour meeting that was tightly scheduled: it started on time and ended on time with no exceptions. If one topic ran long, then all attendees had to agree to reduce the time on some other topic. We started at 9:00 AM and walked out of the room at 10:00 AM. The other 39 hours of the week were spent on projects.

Just a simple question:

- How will you judge the MWiF AI versus the EiA and the WiTP AI ? equal or better ?
- How will you judge it versus the Paradox's Hearts of Iron serie ?

My experience with the WiTP AI is that it is only efficient in managing convoy and supply but totally inapt to adapt to situation that changed and react to a player built up that doesn't follow historical pattern. The Japanese AI by example is very prone to be hurt by guerilla tactics of the ABDA or have small CV task force cruise around a Forteresse Singapour to be sunk by massive air superiority.

And now, several more complete questions , I didn't paln to ask when I started to type ;)

Will the AI be scripted ? will it adapt ? will it be able to coordinate his action between allied MP? Anyway for the player Allies to give orders to the AI Allies so that you can achieve the coordination needed for an Overlord ? could you give/take some of your units control to an AI allied MP so they can ferry them from USA to Britain or you can order them to ground strike a combat you plan to start or ground support one you started ? Can a player Germany give setting to an AI Italy warning him of the level of involvement in the med. he plan to have ? Can a player ask an AI for Landlease ? Ressource Share ?

I have never played any of the 3 games you mentioned - in any form. So I can not comment on them at all.

There are several major threads on the AI Opponent: one for universal decisions and separate ones for each major power. You might read through them for an understanding of how the AIO makes its decisions in MWIF.

Reads and commented, kudos on your job on the AI.

Could the beta-tester comment on comparation between others strategical games AI or would that broke the NDA ?

The last update on the AI Opponnent.

AI Opponent
Define LAIO variables with their supporting functions.  Finish coding the parser for LAIO.  [est. 5 hours]
Begin converting plain text into LAIO rules.  [est. 5 hours]
Provide a small interface to monitor the AIO decisions.  [est. 5 hours]

This was on April 1st. So hopefully it is moving forward with considerable success.

I have not played AI for a while now, but I am re-playing Semper FI. Perhaps this was bad scenario design, or just bad AI, but as an experiment I didn't even move one whole unit during an entire scenario. And guess what?

I won with a tactical victory! Stupid AI just marched toward me and got blasted by all my reserve fire. So yes, sometimes even your pet cat can win a game by just hitting end turn repeatedly. It just depends on the game [:D]

Still waiting to see how WiF turns out...
