Air transfers from CV to land base
I know John 3rd had the same problem with his American CVs having the air units transferring to a base and them becoming all damaged. I just had the same thing happen to me as Japan and wonder why this does happen and what can be done to prevent those planes from becoming 100% damaged?? They have to spend close to a week repairing??
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Just happen to me. Having thought about it the a/c I transfered (in port) was a Hellcat NF which isn't carrier capable ( I think). This maybe the reason.
RE: Air transfers from CV to land base
To avoid the problem you need to fly the AC on/off the CV before it docks (or undock it). Once docked the transferred AC will be damaged.

In both instances, the CVs were at sea and far away from port.

I have seen this too, and it seems to be intermittent. I always save before transferring my CV planes. If they go in damaged when they shouldn't, I reload and do some other stuff, then save and transfer again. Often it will work later. Sometimes I give up. I haven't noted a consistent pattern of when this works and when it doesn't; I think I've even seen a case where I transferred one DB squadron off a carrier and it transferred OK and I transferred the second one and it was 100% damaged. Can't absolutely swear to that, though.

Guys,
Same advice I gave John ... Save game before you do it ... reload the game ...try, try, try, again ... (not always will work, but mostly!)

Oops ... just noted that erstad says the same[;)]

I have encountered the same thing, and it is inconsistent in my experience.

RE: Air transfers from CV to land base
I believe there is a glitch in the rebase routine from CV to base. Ususally rebasing before arriving, or after leaving helps but it's not guaranteed as others already mentioned.
Sometimes it is even possible to rebase air wings without damage when the CV is undocked in the same hex.
But as I said this seems to be pretty erratic, so I rebase when not in the same hex and I save the game before I do so to be on the safe side.
Btw. if you transport non-carrier planes (eg P-40s) on a carrier it's IMO ok that they are 'damaged' at the base. But anything that can lift off (assuming enough runway lenght remains) shouldn't be damaged.

it´s a known bug. At least I know it´s a 100% bug and it was fix/broken with many other things due to some patches in the past...
I don´t know if this is on the list for an upcoming patch...

Hellcat NFs were carrier capable!

RE: Air transfers from CV to land base
Happens to me only when I am in port.
RE: Air transfers from CV to land base
As RUPD3658 said, it happens when the transfert is made from a CV to port or vice versa and if the CV is docked.
If the CV is undocked, the planes are taking off and are landing on the airfield (distance = 0).

that´s how it should be but that´s not always how it really goes. Like ny59giants said, his carriers were way off from port. I do the same as n01487477 stated, save the game before you do CV-base transfers because if it goes wrong you can reload the turn and usually it doesn´t happen twice in a row. At least not on my machine. Glitch, bug, however you want to call that.

Yes, there is a known bug about transfert of air groups but i prefer not to speak about it.

RE: Air transfers from CV to land base
Supposedly NOT a bug, but by design... if a CV was in port, planes were transferred ashore by winching (apparently needing some sort of partial disassembly)... this was modelled...ORIGINAL: rominet

Personally, i think it is excessive, but that was the explanation given a long ago... i would guess any damage by a winching process would be minimal.

The movement delay to the airfield and stripping them down for transport. It was much more convenient to just fly them off/on as you approached or departed port.

Still is today. [:)]
When our carriers return home to port, the only planes that are still on board are those that absolutely cannot fly.

Yeah, but it will happen even for float planes (from non-carrier ships) which would be presumably lowered into the water at the port.ORIGINAL: herwin
