japanese expansion in all directions
How high are the chances for this to happen in AE; Since loading and unloading will take longer, shipping is less plentyful and the first turn movement bonus accounts only for a few TFs, i guess that the japanese will have a harder time occupying the DEI, not to mention being everywhere at once.
furthermore, what about the russians, still as easy to take out or has this become a gamble for the japanese player?

RE: japanese expansion in all directions
This is a tough question - I'm not sure we have enuff super-imaginative Japanese players on the AE team - to answer this in any "definitive" fashion. Things are "harder" for both sides. I played side by side games as Allies one AE game against a human and one stock game against the AI - the build up in AE was much, much slower. And things are slower on the Japanese side as well. But will someone come along who can still make things "explode"? I would guess yes - though probably not in all directions at once. Taking the SRA will take more focus in PBEM against an equal player - and will limit options elsewhere - and least that is my take on things.ORIGINAL: sven6345789

Russians will be much tougher to take out.furthermore, what about the russians, still as easy to take out or has this become a gamble for the japanese player?

I looked long and hard at a Russia first strategy and decided early on that it was suicide, but I kept looking for a way to make it work. A lot of the Russian units leave in summer 42 but even at that, the Japs cant afford to pull as much from China as they can in WitP so I wrote it off as undo-able. About a third of the Jap units in Manchuria are only 25 experience units which means cannon fodder. Same with the air units, about 1/3 are very poorly trained.

How long does it take in AE to bring these poorly trained air units up to a useful level?

useful level usually means higher than you can train them with the training order. So I guess you will never get them to a useful level as you can´t do the "on map bomb a nearly empty base training"...

Well, some changes were made in AE in the past month or so. Now when a pilot comes out of training he isnt the 80 experience Navy near-ace he was in WitP. In the Japs case he is 35 experience (army and navy both). In the allies case:

Meaning the US have already 13000 Pilots in the pool ?
What would be the numbers for "the other side" ?
Thanks for all the work and all your great AAR's !

Thats a secret [:D]
(3900 in the pool and about 350 a month in the pipe)
Its safe to say the allies wont be running out of pilots. Jap air production right now is about equal to their current production. Expansion of the aircraft industry at all or even R&D factories coming on-line will out-pace pilot replacements nearly from the start. And there is no way to get "free pilots" (like WitP) in AE.

It will be either 'too few' or 'not enough', pick your choice. [;)]
If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

RE: japanese expansion in all directions
Thanks for both answers YH and Mistmatz.
Even I prefer correct numbers, I enjoy a good humor too[:D]
But one more is allowed, I hope.
I know, no more free pilots (which is good), but will what is the technik on arrival date of an air group. Will it come empty of pilots and planes, or will it be filled automatically ?
Or will I be able to "park" that group empty, untill I have some spare pilots ?
Regards
Rene'

So pilots reaching squadrons from the pool are more a danger to my war effort than the enemies? How is this resolved? What happens when my USN Wildcat squadrons start filling up with nuggets that can't tell left from right? Do we have to train units now as soon as they arrive?

I don't know the numbers to tell you..., but in my experiance playing a dozen "test starts" (as far as mid-Summer of 1942) as the Allies, the opposition does not run short of pilots. Unfortunately.. [8|]

It takes as many pilots as it has planes. It takes the most experienced ones in the pool, so if you are into Q3 replacements for example, then they are about 20 experience, and yes I think its a good idea to train them a while.

Note that "In Pool" means "in training". So in this case the there's 6770 USN pilots currently undergoing flight training. The columns on the right indicate where they're at - 1870 of those pilots are in the first quarter of their 1-year training cycle and have an average XP of 4 (yes, four, the number typically placed between three and five), 1735 are in the second quarter with an average XP of 11 etc. Unlike WitP, in WitP:AE the monthly replacement figure represents flight school entrants rather than graduates.

Both really. Units arriving from off-board (eastern US fx) arrive fully or partially trained depending on whatever the case was historically. These will come with a complement of pilots and aircraft. Units which form on-map typically arrive with the CO, his dog, and a couple of crated aircraft. It's down to the player to manage his pilot and plane resources from there onwards.
Where's the Any key?

RE: japanese expansion in all directions
Will we be able to train pilots in "training squadrons" and then return them to the pilot pool for assignment to combat formations?

Ok, thats news to me. Then it doesnt work. US Navy for example:
6770 -start
4933 -after Q1 1837 pilots removed
3198 -after Q2 1735 pilots removed
1373 -after Q3 1825 pilots removed
-387 -after Q4 1760 pilots
So what am I missing?
Edit: Does this mean that for a player to know how many trained pilots he has ready to go he has to add up these columns and subtract them from the total all the time?

That was the original design, but was only partially implemented (because of ways to "beat the system"), so it was removed.
Cancel that. Sending pilots to flight training (as instructors) was removed. Yes, you can disband squadrons and the pilots will go back into the pool.

Thanks a lot YH. Exactly what I expected in AE.
At least, you can try to keep your fighter wings working, instead of having another transport squadron, which you may do not need.
Great work.
Thanks

Presuming no new trainees are added and no pilots were drawn from the pool, all trainee pilots would eventually move to the 10-12 month column and the average XP would reach 40 (values currently include operational training, if any). At this point pilots gain no further XP unless assigned a combat unit and trained therein. Hanging out in bars and chasing skirts don't count.
As for the 387 excess pilots, either a) bug or b) named pilots are currently counted towards the pool. Either way we'll have to petition the Code Gods.
Where's the Any key?

Is here any way to increase number of pilots in training or it is hardcoded ?
