Summary of Operations 12/6/43

Summary of Operations 12/6/43

North Pacific: Jap recon flight over Attu Is. Otherwise quiet.

Central Pacific: No Jap air patrol activity reported by U.S. subs near Kwajalein, light air patrols (Ki-49 Helen, Ki-51 Sonia) reported by subs off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese ships or surface ASW in either area.

7 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, one ship detected in port at Truk.
230 ships detected in port at Tokyo.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reports no change in Japanese activity or forces.

South Pacific: Sectors other than Pago Pago area remaining quiet.

Day 82 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is overcast.

AO Guadaloupe torpedoed by Jap sub I-170 on 12/4 arrived at Penhryn Is.

U.S. transports entered Upolu and Pago Pago base hexes on schedule during night movement and begin disembarking LCU's and supply at daylight. Some Jap mines had been expected in both Pago Pago and Upolu hexes along with some Jap CD guns firing on Upolu. Nearly all LCU elements and some supply were successfully disembarked on both Upolu and Pago Pago before the expected heavy Jap LBA naval air strikes later in the day. As estimated, the minimum 40-50% of U.S. transport ships unloading at Upolu and Pago Pago were sunk or heavily damaged at the end of the 12/6 game turn, however, many other transports disembarked their cargo and departed unscathed. As shown in the original Pago Pago invasion, U.S. carrier CAP is sufficient only to cover its own hex, it does not cover anything else.

The small U.S. minesweeping force plus a number of APD's were adequate for sweeping a sufficient number of the Jap mines encountered to avoid excessively heavy losses from this cause.

AAR's of landing ops on Upolu follow. Three divisions (1st Marines, 32nd, 37th), HQ I Amphibious Corps plus supply were disembarked on Upolu.

Summary of Operations 12/7/43

Post by wneumann »

Summary of Operations 12/7/43

North Pacific: Jap recon flight over Attu Is. Otherwise quiet.

Central Pacific: SS Argonaut completes minelaying mission into Tokyo Bay. Other than a reported contact with one Ki-49 Helen air patrol - Argonaut entered Tokyo hex, dropped its cargo of mines, torpedoed an AK, and now departing unopposed and unscathed. Yet another stop in SS Argonaut's now storied itinerary - including Kwajalein, Truk, Suva, Noumea, Rabaul, Singapore, Palembang, Rangoon, Darwin, and Tokyo (in no particular order). AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Tokyo at 66,43

Japanese Ships
AK Kansai Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
PG Tatsumiya Maru
PG Okuyo Maru

Allied Ships

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

214 Japanese ships detected in port at Tokyo.

No report of Jap air activity from U.S. subs near Kwajalein and off Japanese home islands (except for Argonaut). SS Lapon due south of Shikoku reports contact with lone Jap AP, no attack. Otherwise no contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW.

34 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, one ship detected in port at Truk.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting 21 aircraft, 15 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: Sectors other than Pago Pago area remain quiet.

Day 82 of Pago Pago Operations - Current situation map follows end of this report. Nearly all U.S. LCU elements now landed safely on Upolu and Pago Pago.

Whether three additional U.S. divisions and a Corps HQ is sufficient to complete the capture of Upolu is a subject open to discussion. Based on today's ground combat AAR's, one could project a force of 20-25+ U.S. divisions (mininum) is required to complete the job. I didn't expect a cakewalk, but not this... With a little luck and some co-operation from Pillager, Upolu will fall sometime between now and the summer of '45. Maybe I can use the A-bomb on this place? Maybe I will have the 20-25 or more U.S divisions by then? Or just write off the ten divisions (total) stranded on Pago Pago/Upolu/Savaii. But life and WitP goes on....

All ashore that's going ashore...

Landing ops on Upolu virtually complete - any Allied ships not finished disembarking their cargoes by now are or will shortly be on the bottom (this contingency had been designed into my original plans for this operation). AAR's of the final stages of landing ops on Upolu follow.

As expected.... Pillager sent in a Japanese surface combat TF to attack remaining Allied transports that were still disembarking at Upolu. The Jap surface TF engaged several groups of U.S. transports in a series of night actions - one TF contained previously undamaged AK's, the other three TF's included many transports in various "stages of damage" (most of whom were expected to become casualties of Jap naval air strikes - hopefully after they had finished unloading their cargo). AAR's of these actions follow.

After escorting Landing Force TF's to their jumping off point off Pago Pago & Upolu on the evening of 12/5, the U.S. Carrier Main Force had moved to a point N of Pago Pago (shown on situation map) in anticipation of Pillager sending any Jap naval forces southward to attack the landings on Pago Pago and/or Upolu. Following the devastation wreaked on the Landing Force TF's, devastation was in turn wreaked upon the Jap surface TF in several daylight air attacks while leaving Upolu. AAR's follow.

In a series of daylight naval air strikes, a combinaton of Japanese LBA and planes from the KB destroyed nearly all of the remaining U.S. transports at Upolu and vicinity. AAR's follow. The KB appeared due south of Wallis Is during the day phase of 12/7 game turn.

Based on location and detected movement headings shown for several individual KB TF's following the 12/7 game turn - the KB appears to have entered the Pago Pago area from the W or SW, making it possible the KB's current operating base is either Suva or Noumea.

Detected status of Jap base on Upolu - 448 aircraft (109 fighters, 240 bombers), 18 Jap LCU's.

Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 96, airfield service damage 100, port damage 9.
Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 0, airfield service damage 31, port damage 100.

The arrival of additional Seabees and supply appears to be making Pago Pago an operational base, and quickly! A sizeable force of U.S. land-based fighters was immediately transferred (by air movement) from Penhryn into Pago Pago - total strength of this contingent includes 132 F6F's, 24 P-47C's, 24 F4U-1's. In addition to fighters from Penhryn, there is a group of 19 F6F's on Pago Pago from the damaged CVL Langley. Additional fighter planes remain available on Penhryn to reinforce Pago Pago - including more F4U-1's & P-47C's, plus several USAAF P-38 squadrons.

For the time being, the main focus of U.S. efforts is shifting to getting and keeping Pago Pago an operational base. This may in the end permit an Allied victory in the Pago Pago area. Surviving transports returning to Penhryn from this operation will immediately re-load with supply and embark an Aviation Rgt now prepping for Pago Pago. The two key needs for Pago Pago are additional supply points and Aviation Support elements. 126 USAAF Base Force (30 aviation support) is now on Pago Pago, but aviation support on Pago Pago has to be reinforced for the number of planes (particularly fighters) required to keep this base operational and also supporting later efforts on Upolu and Savaii.

CVL Langley (system damage 36, float 40, fire 2) is moving at normal speed back to Penhryn - expected arrival in 4-5 days at present rate.

AAR's of today's ground combat on Upolu follow. It's appearing that five U.S. divisions and a corps HQ is not going to be enough.

Time out....

Post by wneumann »

I'm now playing the 12/9 game turn. Not that anything terrible to the Allied cause happened, but I'm stepping back for a minute before the game gets too far into an exercise in futility.

This is going nowhere and looks like it's going to keep going nowhere. I now have a total of 10 U.S. divisions, three Corps HQ, and 150-200 of my best LBA fighter planes uselessly marooned on Pago Pago, Upolu, and Savaii. Cannot go forward, cannot pull back, cannot attack, barely capable of defense. Pago Pago has again become a Jap bombing range - nearly all U.S. fighter planes on Pago Pago are now grounded.

What are the options?

I can send more in there and have them marooned along what's already been sent to Pago Pago.

I can cut my losses, write off the forces stuck on Pago Pago/Upolu/Savaii and try to continue with what there's left. This is not a real viable option as the rest of Pillager's outer perimeter (to his credit) is as difficult to attack as Pago Pago was and I would be doing this with a greatly reduced force of LCU's. I would also need to await reinforcements to replace at least some of the "lost" LCU's before attempting to launch another offensive anywhere in the Pacific theatres. The resulting delay almost ensures a Jap victory for the campaign.

Attack elsewhere to draw Pillager away from Pago Pago. Everywhere else along Pillager's outer perimeter in the Pacific is an equally bad location to attack as Pago Pago was. All Jap outer perimeter bases are 12-15 hexes or more from the nearest Allied-controlled base (of any size). The vast numbers of U.S. LBA are useless in the current situation - no Jap outer perimeter bases are within their range (including 4E bombers). Many of my shore bombardment BB's are still in the shipyards repairing battle damage. I do have the carrier forces, but having them take on both Japanese LBA and the KB at the same time while supporting a landing and ground combat is a bit too much to ask - they can't do everything.

I have a lot of weapons that are virtually useless in the current situation, and those that are useful are too few and not sufficiently effective for what is required of them.

As stated two game turns back... I wasn't expecting a cakewalk, but also didn't expect a "no-win" situation.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcome.

My suggestion would be getting an engineer regiment or two onto Upolu, and resupply. You've got too much there now to pull off. The engineers will help pound the forts down, which is what is killing you in the assaults.

Just remember that every Japanese aircraft you can down is a net win, at this point.

Maybe the best thing to do is catch your breath, and realize it might take some time to chew up Upolu and get Pago Pago in shape.

(edit : * swap out "Upolu" for "Pago" *)

I've been loosely following this AAR.  In a nut-shell, what the situation (I do better with maps, I'm a visual person).

He's got you backed down to Pago-Upulu, and this is your main counter-attack?
Do you own Noumea? (my guess not).
What does Oz look like?

Just skimming, but leaving 10x Divs marooned seems like a bad idea.

A lot of this is going to be "duh", but...

It looks like you've lost a lot of transports, even when you dig yourself out, it's going to be tough without enough transports for large invasions.  I'm seeing a need for lift capacity of 4 - 6 Divisions for a single invasion.  I only expect this number to go up as Bilbow's defense perimeter shrinks.  Whatever, something to consider later.

Looks like your CV air is doing ok.  Japan loses a lot, you not so much.  And yet, he's beaten the crap out of your invasion/supply convoys.  Are you playing too conservative with your CVs?  I don't want to lose mine either.  And I certainly don't risk them if I don't have to.  But as you said, you're running out of options (and time).

You -MUST- get supplies onto the ground at Pago.  That means risking the CVs.  Your game isn't going anywhere, until you "win" Pago Pago.  If you don't win Pago, you lose.  If you win, you move forward.  Therefore, there isn't anything more important than reinfocing Pago, so bring EVERYTHING.  Every CV.  Every BB.  Every CA.  Use the little AKs or even LSTs so they unload supplies quickly.  It's probaly going to hurt a bit, you're probably NOT going to get away unscathed.  But again, you're not going anywhere unless you go forward at Pago, so bring your brothers, and your cousins, and your neighbors, and give your grandmother a gun, and bring her too.

You're experiencing a bad case of "too close to the trees to see the forest."  You're letting a battle consume you and allowing it to create doubt about the overall strategic situation.  December 1943 is still early in the game, although you certainly need a plan in effect that will put you in a position to win the game:

1)  You don't want to lose ten divisions at Pago Pago.  I agree with Feinder: in the short run, get everything there and win that battle even if it takes months.  You'll take losses, but it's time to "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

2)  Pago Pago will be increasingly unimportant in 1944 as it's too far from where you need to be focusing.  Too, it's an atoll, which makes it very hard.  You need to TRASH any plan you might have to pursue a step-by-step, island-by-island attack across CenPac (Tarawa, etc.).  Too long, too tough!

3)  While you fixing Pago Pago, you need to be getting troops prepped, supplies in position, and transports gathered for the next big Allied push.  You need to strike much closer to the Japanese heartland - some obvious candidates would be Hokkaido/Sikhalin Island, Philippines, Java, Sumatra.

4)  The Brits need to be lending a hand by applying pressure on the Japs somewhere in the DEI area.

5)  The Americans and Australians could combine for an attack from the east while the Brits/Indians attack from the West, or you could let the Brits/Australians have the south while the Americans head north.  But keep up enough deception to confuse the Japs as to your intentions as best you can.

6)  If you carrier fleet is still intact at this point, by 1944 you can create immensely powerful carrier TFs, combat TFs, and invasion fleets that should be able to go just about anywhere on the map and take essentially anything that isn't fully defended.  Your opponent can't defend everything.  Also, if you're fighting at Pago Pago, he might feel somewhat secure in his tender underbelly somewhere, which should permit you to surprise him somewhere.  But you need to have some major airbases within range of either the Home Islands or the main DEI bases soon, so that you can implement a major strategic bombing campaign.

Feinder, Canoerebel... Appreciate the replies

I am kinda partial to Feinder's point of view. Send everything to Pago Pago that can be carried, flown, and sailed in. I also agree with the view that "if the U.S. doesn't win at Pago Pago, the Japs win this game".

As stated earlier, Pillager to his credit did a very good job of locating and creating a Japanese outer perimeter running along the line Wake Is - Marshalls - Canton Is - Pago Pago - Suva - Noumea - Port Moresby. Stretching in front of the entire Japanese outer perimeter line is a continuous no man's land of at least 12-15 hexes of open sea between Japanese and U.S. forward bases. Penrhyn, the Society Islands and New Zealand are the only Allied-controlled areas between the Line Islands and Australia. This sea distance completely eliminates any use of U.S. LBA in an offensive role, air support to attack against any point along Pillager's outer perimeter has to be done entirely by carriers.

Pago Pago had been my main attack (though not planned as the only one).

The first priority I'm starting to see is having an operational airfield in the Samoan Islands (i.e. Pago Pago) so I can get some LBA into action in this area, especially fighters. My plans for the next convoy out from Penhryn is airbase LCU's (particularly aviation support elements) and as much supply as possible into Pago Pago. Get some fighter planes flying to take on the Jap LBA - the carriers can't do it all.

If it is possible to get and keep Pago Pago as an operational airbase (more or less secure from Jap air attacks) with a large stockpile of supply (80-100K) in place there, transport planes could be brought into Pago Pago in order to fly air transport supply to LCU's on Upolu and Savaii. LBA from an operational airbase on Pago Pago would also take some of the load off of the carriers.

On the LCU situation... The ten divisions (and friends) now in the Samoan Islands are going to have to sit there and get pounded by Jap air and ground bombardment attacks along with the occasional naval shelling. Passive defense seems to be their only option, the supply situation on Upolu and Savaii totally preclude anything else.

I'm seeing little or no point in reinforcing either Upolu or Savaii in the short term. What I already have there is pinned down and they can't be supplied or reinforced without outrageous losses in ships.

Nearly all available South Pacific and most SW Pacific divisions are stuck on Pago Pago, Upolu, or Savaii. I do have the entire contingent of Central Pacific LCU's available for action - many of these currently prepped for Wake Is.

Getting back to Feinder's thought... at this point in the game maybe I should go "all in". If the Allies win, fine. If not... call it a day, shake hands, and start another match. Even in losing the "grand battle" there are things in WitP I have yet to have the opportunity to do vs a human opponent. And getting to the last part of point (6) in Canoerebel's post, outside of the Pago Pago area, Pillager's underbelly could easily cover a wide stretch of territory with multiple possibilities for successful Allied attacks.

Once again, appreciate the comments, hopefully kick some ideas around. I intend to slow down the pace of the game a little in the short term to begin implementing any good ideas coming from the discussion.

Stay away from Wake!  You don't need another bloody atoll invasion.  You're opponent knows that's a likely target and will have it well-defended.  It'll just be Pago Pago again.  You need to go for the THROAT.  It's nearly 1944, for goodness sake.  Forget his outer perimeter and all it's teeth.  Get all available transports and men in position to invade the DEI, Sumatra, or Hokkaido/Sikhalin Island (the latter probably can't be invaded until March at earliest due to winter conditions in the Arctic).  Once you get Pago Pago squared away, don't fight where your opponent wants you to fight any more.

Good Day.

I just got to reading this and have to admit that if I was playing you and had you ALL THE WAY OUT HERE in December 1943 I would be celebrating!  Holy Crap.  Why get tangled up here?  Move into the Central Pacific would be my thought.  I only DREAMED Dan would get stuck out here in our game.

How there be so many planes at Upolu?!!  You said something like 600+.  Wow.  Why not bombardment the heck out of the base?  You could have also sent in your CVEs to provide protection over your AK-AP that just got decimated.  So what if you lose some.  You should have them coming in by the dozens right now...

Keep in mind this is all from the eyes of a Japanese player...

Ring the place with subs at 4 and 5 hexes out, that'll cut down on the nuke bombardments.

Have an AvRgt + supplies ready to land quickly, along with 8x CB Btn to clean up the AF quickly.

Follow your Ambib TF in with as many carrier fighters as you can.  If you're playing CHS (looks like you are), replace the DB squadrons with the Naval Reserve Squadrons (there are 4+ landed VF squadrons that are pure Navy, that you can replace the DBs with, even if there is HR vs. USMC on CVs).  That'll give you as much cover as you can.

Naturally, your surface fleets go all the way in.  Some for bombard is fine, but keep a strong fleet as SC, because in terms of starting advances, SC trumps Bombardment.

Also consider stripping of the organic groups on say, 3 - 4 CVEs.  Put on 3 sqdns of Corsairs each CVE, or whatever allows you unde 2x capacity.  Have them ready to fly off to Pago as soon as you've got a AvRgt + supplies on the ground.  your priority will be local air superiority, to protect your lingering SC TFs vs nukers.  Also consider spawning in a however many PTs that you're allowed from your supply convoy (insta nuke protection).  And while you're at it, have your MLs ready to move in the turn AFTER you've unloaded (if your MLs unload while you're unloading, you've got a high chance of hitting your own mines).

I don't know what your losses have been thus far, but end of '43, you've probably got a pretty good arsenal, even if you have taken losses.  Take everything with you, and kick some butt.

Feinder, Canoerebel, and all... Appreciate the discussion.

Just sent the 12/9 turn in to Pillager. I don't expect much to happen.

Nearly all the surviving transports (and a decent number of them) are already well out of Jap LBA range. All the remaining operational transport ships from the Pago Pago action should arrive in Penhryn within the next 2-3 game turns. U.S. Carrier Main Force is also returning to Penhryn and should be there in 2-3 days as well - VF squadrons recovering damaged planes and pilot fatigue, VB & VT squadrons fully operational.

A quick turn-around - reloading transports with the Aviation Rgt and supply, also getting VF squadrons fully operational on the carriers and sending the whole lot back to Pago Pago could work out in the sense Pillager may be caught off-guard (not expecting a quick return of U.S. ships to Pago Pago).

The KB is hanging around just south of Wallis Is and does not appear to have much interest in moving eastward.

In the meantime, looking at the map and taking inventory.

As far as planes are concerned...

1) There's quite a few fighter planes in the U.S. arsenal capable of transferring by air directly from Penhryn into Pago Pago without excessive pilot fatigue or plane attrition. Fighters capable of this include F6F's, P-47's, F4U-1's, probably also P-38's and P-51B's. I still have a number of these planes on Penhryn and can transfer more southward to Penhryn relatively quickly.

2) Feinder - The VF squadrons you spoke of were transferred onto Pago Pago.

3) 4E bombers... I have seven squadrons of P4Y's (84 planes) plus one squadron each of LB-30's and B-24D's flying supply transport from Penhryn into Pago Pago. I have another 100+ bombers (mostly B-24's) enroute to Penhryn from as far away as Pearl to reinforce the supply airlift. For the moment, there's nothing for these bombers to bomb, here's a (temporary) use for them.

I have 206K supply on hand at Penhryn so plenty of available cargo to airlift.

Moving on to ships...

1) It may take awhile to form Shore Bombardment/Surface Combat TF(s) - these TF took a beating in the initial Pago Pago invasion. Many BB's and cruisers for these TF are now reparing in shipyards on the U.S. West Coast, several of these just now completing repairs. Only 4 BB's currently operational. A bit light on U.S. cruisers, though there are some British and Dutch ones just leaving the U.S. after refits and/or repairs. More than enough DD's.

2) PT boats - 200 in the pool, plus a considerable number on-map. Given the situation, I've had little opportunity to use them.

3) Carrier forces now returning to Penhryn include 7 CV, 6 CVL - these ships and their escorts have put on some miles and somewhat in need of a refit, otherwise serviceable. Plenty of replacement planes & pilots available. Two more CVL's are enroute, also CV Intrepid is due as reinforcement in Panama City in about 20 days. One damaged CV (Saratoga w/ 61 system damage) now repairing on the West Coast. CVL Langley (also damaged) making its way to Penhryn after being hit in the recent action.

4) Four CVE's are available - two at Pearl, two more departing the West Coast. One more CVE is repairing heavy damage from the initial Pago Pago operations. This is excluding the Long Island.

5) John... I had 10 CVE plus the Long Island prior to the initial Pago Pago landings, seven of these CVE were sunk with an eighth one damaged while escorting the first landings - they did take a lot of Jap planes out before they went down. What I mentioned in (4) above is the remnants of that force plus new reinforcements arriving since the first Pago Pago landings.

6) Subs - a number of these are being moved south. Penhryn and several other bases within striking range of Pago Pago have AS and have sufficient stocks of fuel/supply to replenish.

Canoerebel - like your idea of the DEI. Might be a very effective way of getting the British into the act, especially if there's any chance of diverting even a small number of U.S. forces into this area to reinforce the Brits. Some forces in Australia can be used along with this as well. It'd take a bit of time to organize and assemble but still the potential of being worthwhile. Maybe even as the main theatre.

I had been considering Wake as a second strike following a successful capture of Samoa (which didn't happen) and was prepping Central Pacific LCU's for this action. With all the problems at Pago Pago, the Wake operation had been getting more and more unfeasible.

What could be done here is using at least some Central Pacific LCU's as a pool for other operations - i.e. a northern campaign, shipping them via Australia for use against the DEI. LCU reinforcements now arriving or due to arrive for South Pacific & Southwest Pacific can be added to this pool.

Question here... What is the feasibility of attacking the DEI?

Combining the available British and Australians, plus the available U.S. LCU's that can reasonably be transferred to this theatre without completely stripping out the Pacific or any other theatre, a sizeable invasion force can be formed.

The DEI does have many smaller islands suitable for obtaining what could be a relatively easy foothold without having to attack the larger islands or major Jap bases. The initial point of attack I'm looking at in the DEI is Bali and adjacent islands to the east. However small, airfields on these islands would allow me to introduce LBA. A possible axis of advance from these islands would be northward to Kendari and Macassar, also moving eastward to isolate Jap positions in NW Australia.

Of course this part of the DEI would put 4E bombers within range of at least some of the oil facilities - Soerabaja, Balikpapan and Tarakan in particular.

In Australia, I am continuing preparations for an overland ground attack (from Townsville area) to capture Portland Roads and eliminate the Japanese foothold in NE Australia. I had been considering a ground offensive in NW Australia northward from Tennant Creek but inclined to cancel this operation - a frontal attack on Daly Waters with 26 Jap LCU's in there would be an equally big mistake as what happened at Pago Pago was. Both these actions would free up Australian ground forces and U.S. SW Pacific forces now in Australia for other operations.

In the Pacific, what about the Solomons? Lots of small islands, Pillager can't be defending all of them.

Aside from not leaving 10 divisions to wither on the vine... continue efforts to get Pago Pago base operational, keep Pillager's attention locked up here, also get the 10 stuck U.S. divisions freed up for use someday. Feinder's suggestions pretty much fill the bill to do this. An Allied victory at Pago Pago now is getting the airbase operational, tying up Japanese forces (along with some attrition on them), and extracting some of the stuck U.S. ground forces out so they can be used in offensive operations elsewhere. Pago Pago is not a jumping off point for bigger and better things, but is still can be a thorn in Pillager's side. Not planning a retreat here - Pago Pago is just not the place from which to continue an attack.

In real life, island hopping was done for a reason. Pago Pago was in violation of that "rule".

What can the Allies still put together? A pool of U.S. LCU's in the Central Pacific (without completely stripping the place), a number of uncommittted South and SW Pacific LCU's, plus Australians and the British. 8000 PP's to make the necessary command transfers. It's doable.

Ships... The U.S. carrier forces are virtually intact (except for damaged CV Saratoga & one CVL), though I've lost all the British CV's. Many CVE's were lost in the initial Pago Pago invasion, re-building this force will have to be from reinforcements as they come in.

Once the currently damaged ships are repaired, ships for surface combat and bombardment TF's also available in good quantities. For purposes of surface combat and bombardment TF's, combining U.S. and British fleets would be a plus. Nearly all the Dutch CL's and DD's also available.

Transports... Aside from losses at Pago Pago, I still have a substantial pool of U.S. ships and landing craft. Back in 12/41 and early 1942 I successfully evacuated a substantial number of small transports from the Philippines, DEI and elsewhere, with the specific purpose of collecting them for use in later amphibious ops. I expended many of these transports in the Pago Pago operations - these accounting for about half of the transports sunk from Japanese air and surface naval attacks at Pago Pago. Then there's a very large and mostly inactive pool of British shipping in India.

Aircraft... First, the very large quantities of U.S. LBA sitting in bases all over the Pacific, currently unable to do anything other than training flights and naval search patrols. Some of these already moving out.

The forces are there... just need to collect them and decide on where to go with them.

One more question... Burma. What's the possiblity of a ground offensive from India at this time? Allied ground and air forces in this region are intact - I add to this the 5-6 Indian and Commonwealth INF brigades that started the game in Singapore (elements of these LCU were evacuated to India before Singapore fell in '42, all these brigades now rebuilt into full-strength LCU's). Known Japanese ground forces in Burma center around three divisions (31st, 33rd, 55th) with smaller LCU's. I don't see much point in sea invasions in the Burma theatre, with the exception of moving into Port Blair (unoccupied but still under Allied control).

Feinder and Canoerebel - I greatly appreciate the comments and hope to continue the dialogue. I had reached the point in this game where the input was quite necessary. Hope to continue. Once again, thanks. Not excluding any other contributors.
