What a great thread!

Any chance that it will continue to be developed? This is basically becoming a FAQ list for me.

Requisitioned fishing boats were used both for harbor patrol and to supply marine landings though out the pacific. The large refrigeration holds were used to hold fresh beef and vegetables for the marines during island landings. They were first used to patrol large west coast harbors, often where they were built or seized. With the beginning of marine amphibious landings starting at Guadalcanal mid/late ‘42 they were repositioned and used for supply.

As they were smaller, 100+ feet, than small freighters they could get in close to the beach. They would load up on supplies at nearby port off of freighters to make supply runs to marine landing locations. As well as island landing they also made supply runs to PT bases, as service onboard them was also considered a death sentence and so the navy did its best to provide fresh meat and vegetables to them as well.
Right after initial landings and beach was somewhat secure the YP would pull up and unload the fresh food for the marines. Although the beach was still taking some small arms fire, the marines placed a high value on the fresh food and would do what they could to suppress enemy fire, both heavy and small arms fire, on ship until unloading was completed.

It was rather hazardous duty and seamen who served on them were considered already dead and thereby granted special privileges such as being first served even before senior officers (mail, laundry, pay, etc.); given fresh food rather than the reconstituted tri-coloured mush that the others ate.

If I’m not mistaken, the thread is older than the game. IIRC I got the game in the 2009 Summer, or maybe early Fall.

And after checking on my laptop, the manual was was created May 2009, modified July 2009...

Those Tuna Boats did a lot of good work.

Subs

------
Remember, for instance, that you can automate patrol task force. Set up three way points for a submarine to travel between, one being a base where it can resupply, and leave it to do its thing.

----------------

On having more than one sub in a TF

Code in WITP was set up to allow only one sub to attack - the Task Force flagship.

AE still allows only one sub to attack at a time but selects the sub based on armmo, ops, fuel, and some random.

A "Wolf Pack" TF will not make the Atlantic-style coordinated attacks, but it is possible for different subs in the TF to attack during the same combat phase.

"Wolf Packs"

I do believe that Alfred provided very proscriptive proof on Sub Wolf packs - although I cannot locate the thread. "The engine doesn't work that way" in essence. This from memory so forgive me if it is not perfectly correct.

Better to have 2 (or more ) individual Sub Task forces patrolling a hex (or series of Hexes) in over lapping fashion than to have 2 (or more) Subs in one task force.

"Sub Combat Results"

Via Witpqs / IdahoNYer / et al and many other sage veterans in various AARs

"Time on station / patrol is even more important than the most effective zone of patrol". Sub play ( especially Allied) seems to be a lot of clicking - micro management - especially when Allied Torpedoes are not so effective in the early war. 'Auto sub' operations option further seems to offer a manner to minimize the investment.

Take the time to invest and build up forward bases near to desired patrol zones. Take the time to set individual Sub Task forces. Optimum Sub results are generated mostly by Time On Station.

Also, do your necessary upgrades such as the 4/42 upgrade for American submarines which give them radar.
